As the blue light faded, a purple, monkey-like Pokémon with a forked tuft of hair on its head and two long, strange tails appeared before Natsui.
Natsui took out his Pokédex and aimed it at the creature.
Pokédex:"Beep. Ambipom, the Long Tail Pokémon. A Normal-type. Ambipom live in large groups in giant trees. Because their tails can handle various tasks so skillfully, they have become almost completely unused to using their hands. They link their tails together to form a ring, which is a sign of their bond and a way to convey emotions. It is said that humans are sometimes invited to join the ring. If its two tails embrace you, it is a sign of true affection."
This was a Pokémon often seen in the forests of Johto and other regions. They usually move in groups and will attack any person or Pokémon that intrudes on their territory.
As the evolved form of Aipom, while not very common in cities, Natsui had some impression of this Pokémon.
He remembered that Ash had caught an Aipom in his later travels, which he eventually traded to Dawn and which evolved into an Ambipom.
This Pokémon was also very fast and agile, not an easy opponent to deal with.
After considering his options, Natsui recalled Tyranitar and sent out his Scizor.
Since the opponent had strange tails, he might as well send out a guy with giant pincers to deal with it.
When Scizor appeared in front of Ambipom, Whitney looked it over a few times.
Scizor's Steel typing would halve the damage from Ambipom's Normal-type attacks. Furthermore, most of Ambipom's attacks relied on its two tails, which seemed like they would be at a disadvantage against Scizor's massive pincers.
So that's why he sent out Scizor. That was his plan.
A very smart choice.
When the battle began, both Pokémon charged at each other.
Ambipom dodged Scizor's Slash attack by propping itself up on one tail and lifting its body. It then used its other tail to slap at Scizor's head, but the attack was blocked by Scizor's right pincer.
Just then, Ambipom suddenly let out a sharp cry. Caught off guard, Scizor was startled and froze in place. In that brief opening, Ambipom's two long tails repeatedly struck Scizor's body.
Natsui saw it clearly from the side. Ambipom had used Astonish to create an opening, then followed up with Fury Swipes.
The combo was so smooth, it was clear it had been used many times before.
Against another Pokémon, this combo might have caused some damage, but its target was the steel-hard Scizor.
Although Ambipom's tails were strong, when they hit Scizor's hard, red chest, they only made dull thudding sounds, like hitting a high-speed train.
Fortunately, the Astonish hadn't caused it to flinch.
"Scizor, use Night Slash!"
At Natsui's command, Scizor swung both of its pincers. But at that moment, Ambipom suddenly used its tails to wrap around both pincers, binding them together like handcuffs and making it impossible for Scizor to use the move.
This was somewhat unexpected for Natsui. He knew its tails were flexible, but he never thought they could be used like that.
Whitney smiled. "Without your hands, how are you going to fight now?"
Natsui wasn't concerned. He commanded, "Use Iron Head!"
"What!?"
The smile froze on Whitney's face. In the field, Scizor's head snapped back. It then pulled its pincers in sharply, yanking Ambipom towards it, and slammed its steel-hard red head into Ambipom's face.
BANG!
The impact of steel on bone almost made Ambipom faint.
It instinctively released its tails and fell to the ground. It swayed unsteadily like it was drunk, unable to stand properly.
"Good chance! Use X-Scissor!"
Seeing that Scizor had already assumed an attack stance while Ambipom was still dazed, Whitney shouted anxiously, "Ambipom, snap out of it!"
But even though Whitney's voice reached Ambipom's ears, it was too dizzy. It tried to steady itself a few times, but couldn't.
"It's over," Natsui said softly.
And just as he said, facing an opponent that couldn't even stand, Scizor's X-Scissor landed a direct hit. Not giving it a chance to struggle, Scizor followed up with another Slash, knocking Ambipom to the ground.
The referee raised her flag. "Ambipom is unable to battle! Scizor wins the second round!"
Sigh...
Whitney let out a regretful sigh. Sometimes battles were like that. One moment you have the upper hand, and the next, a single wrong decision leads to defeat.
Was her strategy wrong?
She had won against many other trainers with that same tactic. It's just that, in all her calculations, she had misjudged just how hard Scizor's head was.
If it had been another opponent, the one on the ground now would probably be them.
Shaking off her thoughts, she recalled Ambipom with a wry smile and took out her final Poké Ball.
"Amazing. You defeated two of my Pokémon so easily. You really are a champion! Well then, my last Pokémon, go, Lopunny!"
As the Poké Ball opened, a fluffy, agile-looking brown rabbit appeared before Natsui.
A Lopunny, huh...
Natsui rubbed his chin.
A cow, a monkey, and now a rabbit. Whitney's team was like a zoo.
However, Lopunny were common in Sinnoh, Unova, Alola, and Galar, but no wild Lopunny had been found in Johto.
Just like before, Natsui took out his Pokédex again and aimed it at the Lopunny.
Pokédex:"Beep. Lopunny, the Rabbit Pokémon. A Normal-type. This is a very cautious Pokémon. It runs with light, springy steps. When it senses danger, it wraps its body in the soft, fluffy fur on its ears and gracefully hops away to escape. It dislikes fighting, but when faced with danger, it will unleash kicks of incredible destructive power."
