"I see," Bugsy said, his eyes widening in understanding. "You used Pupitar's special movement to keep up with Spinarak's web-swinging. Very clever!"
In mid-air, Pupitar slammed into Spinarak, which was still swinging, and knocked it to the ground.
Thud!
Spinarak hit the ground hard. Fortunately, its six legs allowed it to quickly scramble up and escape Pupitar's attack range, preventing a follow-up attack.
Clank...
Pupitar landed in front of Spinarak. The moment the Pokémon was switched, not only did the intensity of the battle increase, but the situation was instantly reversed.
Of course, this didn't mean Eevee was too weak. It was just that Spinarak's method of moving through the trees was too much of an advantage, and Eevee's offensive options were too limited for it to land a hit.
If they had fought a straightforward battle on the ground, Eevee might not have lost.
But with Pupitar, everything was different.
Seeing the change in the situation, Bugsy dropped his pretense of composure and yelled, "Spinarak, restrict its movement!"
Watching Spinarak's mouth puff up, Natsui knew its silk was very sticky. Once caught, it would be difficult to break free, so he naturally wouldn't let Bugsy get his way.
He gave a decisive command. "Use Sandstorm!"
The moment Spinarak spat its silk, the entire field was enveloped in a swirling vortex of yellow sand. At first, Pupitar's figure was barely visible, but as the sandstorm intensified, it vanished completely into the dust.
The sandstorm engulfed Spinarak as well.
Initially, it could still shoot a few streams of silk towards where it had last seen Pupitar. But as the sandstorm grew thicker, it became completely disoriented and immediately lost track of its opponent.
At the same time, the sand was mixed with countless fine pebbles. While they didn't hurt much, they caused continuous damage and made it difficult to move.
As is well known, spider-like creatures have no eyelids and cannot close their eyes, relying on tear glands to keep them moist. But in a sandstorm like this, what good were tears?
Spinarak's eyes were instantly covered in dust. It could only use its two front legs to continuously wipe them, trying to clear away the endless sand.
But no sooner had it wiped them clean than they were covered again. This cycle repeated, making it impossible to do anything else.
His vision blocked by the sand, Bugsy couldn't see what was happening. Knowing this environment was extremely disadvantageous for Spinarak, he shouted anxiously, "Spinarak! Watch out for a sneak attack from Pupitar!"
The wind carried the sand, making Bugsy's voice intermittent.
Spinarak lowered its head, shielding its eyes with its front legs to slightly reduce the impact of the sand. It slowly turned in a circle, trying to sense its surroundings and find Pupitar.
And it actually detected something.
In the yellow sand, a silver shadow was quietly approaching.
Without thinking, it opened its mouth and fired a barrage of Pin Missiles at the silver shadow.
In its panic, Spinarak didn't know if it had hit its mark. As it wondered, it saw another silver shadow approaching from a different direction.
This time, it shot a Poison Sting at the shadow. But when the needle flew out, there was only a soft 'clink,' and the needle was sent spinning away.
A miss? Or was it deflected by something?
By now, the sandstorm was beginning to weaken, and visibility was improving. When the sand stopped blowing into its eyes, Spinarak looked up and saw that what it had just hit with its Poison Sting was a large rock.
Where did this big rock come from?
Before it could think further, it heard the sound of wind behind it. It only had time to turn around to see a silver, iron-mask-like object rushing towards it, growing larger and larger...
It was Pupitar's body.
With no time to dodge, Spinarak took the full force of the blow and was sent flying.
...
On his side of the field, Bugsy frowned, a look of unease on his face. He stared intently into the sandstorm. As the wind died down and the storm showed signs of stopping, he immediately looked towards the center of the field.
But before he could find his Pokémon, he saw Spinarak flying out of the storm and fainting.
Huh? What happened?
How did his Spinarak get defeated after just one sandstorm?
From the several large rocks that had appeared on the field, he could guess that Pupitar must have used a Rock-type move inside the storm, but he didn't know the specific details.
He glanced over at Natsui and saw the challenger looking calm, showing little emotion at Pupitar's victory.
Although he didn't know what had just happened, Spinarak's defeat was a fact. Bugsy could only take out its Poké Ball and recall it.
"It seems that unlike your Eevee, this Pupitar is quite skilled. But no matter, let's see you face my second Pokémon!"
With that, Bugsy took out his second Poké Ball and sent out the Pokémon inside.
The next second, a green Metapod appeared before Natsui.
Metapod?
Natsui looked at the Pokémon and found it amusing. Not for any other reason, but because his own Pupitar was also in a cocoon-like state. Metapod was also not fully evolved. The two Pokémon, both without arms or legs, facing each other was a rather comical sight.
This guy didn't deliberately send out a Metapod just to mock me after I sent out a Pupitar, did he?
As if sensing Natsui's confusion, Bugsy smiled confidently. "Don't underestimate my Metapod. It's the proud warrior of Bug-type Pokémon!"
First, his Spinarak was a "silent warrior," and now this Metapod is a "proud warrior."
What normal person gives their Pokémon titles like that?
Bugsy might be a gym leader at a young age, but he came across as way too dramatic.
Looking at the green cocoon, Natsui didn't switch his Pokémon, letting Pupitar continue the battle.
As the evolved form of Caterpie, Metapod was known for its hard shell, which protects the soft, changing body inside.
Since it was a rare opportunity to have two Pokémon in similar states battle each other, Natsui also wanted to see whose shell was harder.
Bugsy's Metapod, or his Pupitar.
