Chapter 501 - Chapter 501: Acknowledging Shortcomings

Facing Bugsy's first Pokémon, Natsui didn't overthink it and sent out his Eevee.

He had already planned to use Eevee in this battle when he first came to the Azalea Gym three days prior. His goal was to train Eevee and help it grow quickly.

Since leaving Ecruteak City with him, Eevee had seen a lot of the world. Although it had only been in a few one-on-one battles during that time, it had participated in many large and small brawls, accumulating a fair amount of combat experience.

Its strength wasn't exceptional, but it could still put up a fight.

After the flash of blue light, Eevee appeared in front of Spinarak, looking around excitedly.

Seeing the eager Eevee, Bugsy wasn't too surprised.

Having been a gym leader for a long time, he had seen not just Eevee, but also its evolutions like Flareon, Vaporeon, and Jolteon, far too many times. He had even seen many stranger and rarer Pokémon.

An ordinary, unevolved Pokémon like Eevee made Bugsy feel that the challenger before him was also quite ordinary.

Otherwise, why would Eevee still be in its base form after traveling for so long?

He knew that with enough time and a strong bond, even without an evolution stone, an Eevee could evolve into an Espeon or Umbreon. In his eyes, the fact that this Eevee hadn't evolved likely meant that, aside from the small chance that Eevee itself didn't want to evolve, the bond with its trainer was not yet strong enough. They clearly weren't that close.

Bugsy certainly had a keen eye to notice the weak bond between Eevee and Natsui. Of course, he didn't know that Natsui had only gotten this Eevee a short time ago, so they hadn't built much trust yet.

Seeing that both Pokémon were ready, the referee waved his flag, and the battle began.

The moment the flag dropped, Eevee showed its hyperactive nature. Without waiting for Natsui's command, it eagerly charged at Spinarak.

Seeing this, Natsui let out a soft sigh.

They had spent too little time together. It had gotten used to a lazy and free lifestyle with the Kimono Sisters, to the point where it didn't listen to his commands very well.

This wouldn't do.

It seemed he would have to find some time to properly train it.

On the other side, Spinarak stood its ground against Eevee's charge. The white pupils in its black eyes carefully watched Eevee's every move. As Eevee got closer, the moment its hind legs touched the ground, Spinarak suddenly shot out a stream of white silk, whipping towards Eevee.

The white silk flashed through the air, reaching Eevee in an instant.

"Dodge it, quick!" Natsui yelled.

Even without Natsui's warning, Eevee knew to dodge. With its agile body, it rolled to the side. The white silk narrowly missed, grazing its fur as it flew past with a whoosh.

Having barely escaped, Eevee broke out in a cold sweat, and it knew it couldn't be careless.

Natsui took the opportunity to call out again, "Eevee! Stop acting on your own and listen to my commands!"

Fortunately, they had spent some time together, and after that close call, Eevee didn't hesitate and chose to obey Natsui's command.

"Use Sand Attack!"

Eevee turned and kicked the ground hard with its hind legs. In an instant, a wave of dust mixed with sand and pebbles sprayed towards Spinarak.

In the opposite trainer's box, Bugsy remained calm. "Spinarak, use Agility!"

The normally slow-moving Spinarak instantly became a blur. At Bugsy's command, it moved at high speed, escaping the range of the Sand Attack.

The dust and pebbles covered the spot where Spinarak had just been, but they didn't even touch its shadow.

In this first exchange, Eevee not only failed to gain an advantage but was also nearly hit by the silk. It seemed to be at a slight disadvantage, which showed that Bugsy's Spinarak was quite skilled.

In terms of physical abilities like agility and stamina, Eevee was superior to Spinarak in most aspects. If they were at a similar power level, Eevee should have a high chance of winning, which was why Natsui had dared to send it out.

But it was clear that this Spinarak, having been stationed at the gym and constantly battling challengers, was well-trained and could not be compared to an ordinary one.

In the field, the two Pokémon clashed again.

Eevee used Tackle, trying to use its superior speed to damage Spinarak.

However, Spinarak used its silk, attaching it to a tree and swinging like on a trapeze to easily dodge the attack. When Eevee charged again, Spinarak swung through the trees, quickly moving to the other side of the battlefield.

In a flash, the two Pokémon were far apart again.

This time, even Erika, who was sitting on the sidelines, sensed that something was wrong.

In this battle, not only was Spinarak stronger, but it also had the terrain advantage. With no type advantage, it would be extremely difficult for Eevee to win.

How will you handle this?

Erika looked at Natsui, a hint of worry in her beautiful eyes.

In the trainer's box, facing this situation, Natsui thought for a moment. He wasn't going to be stubborn. He took a Poké Ball from his pouch and recalled Eevee directly.

"Oh? Giving up already?"

Bugsy crossed his arms, his expression calm, seemingly unfazed by Natsui's switch.

Natsui didn't feel any shame and admitted it directly. "The current Eevee is no match for your Spinarak. It still needs more training. So, I'll switch to a slightly stronger Pokémon to battle you."

Natsui threw out another Poké Ball. When the blue light faded, his Pupitar appeared before Bugsy.

"Pupitar, is it?"

Seeing Pupitar, Bugsy became a little more serious.

Compared to most Pokémon, Pupitar was undoubtedly rarer, and its physical stats were much higher than Eevee's. He couldn't afford not to take it seriously.

When the battle resumed, things were not so easy for Spinarak.

Facing Pupitar's charge, it tried to use the same trick again, swinging across the field with its silk to create distance. But compared to Eevee, Pupitar was different. It expelled compressed air from its body and was instantly right next to Spinarak again.

Once its most reliable tactic was countered, Spinarak lost its greatest advantage.
