Dragonite moved quickly. Thanks to its speed advantage, it got to the concrete pillar before Conkeldurr could and kicked it out of the battle area.
Rumble, rumble...
The pillar rolled off the field. According to the rules, once an object is out of bounds, it can't be brought back in.
This felt a little unfair, kind of like knocking the bone out of a Marowak's hand. Everyone knows the bone is its weapon, and while throwing it away isn't against the rules, it doesn't feel like a very honorable way to win.
However, the pillars were Conkeldurr's own weapons. The unarmed Dragonite was at a disadvantage, so it made sense to get rid of them first.
Conkeldurr became more cautious. After what had just happened, it didn't dare to throw its last pillar, afraid that Dragonite would just kick that one out too. But without an effective long-range attack, it was much harder to stop Dragonite's moves.
Sure enough, when Dragonite started gathering energy for a Dragon Rage, Conkeldurr hesitated. It decided not to throw its pillar and instead rushed toward Dragonite.
The Dragon Rage formed quickly and shot from Dragonite's hands. In an instant, a wave of angry energy flew across the field and swallowed Conkeldurr whole.
BOOM!
Conkeldurr was covered in blue light. It held its last pillar in front of its chest, trying to block the attack. But concrete couldn't stand up to a Pokémon move. After just a few seconds, the pillar crumbled into dust under the force of the Dragon Rage.
Luckily, the pillar had blocked most of the damage. When the Dragon Rage faded, Conkeldurr, though burned by the energy, was already right in front of Dragonite.
"Conkeldurr, use Dynamic Punch!" Chuck shouted.
At the command, Conkeldurr put all its strength into its right fist and swung hard at Dragonite's face.
The two Pokémon were now right next to each other. With Conkeldurr's pillars gone, Dragonite wasn't afraid. Its own hands sparked with electricity as it met the attack with a Thunder Punch.
In a flash, they passed each other, and both punches landed.
BAM!
CRACKLE!
Dynamic Punch is a powerful Fighting-type move that always confuses the opponent when it hits. Dragonite stumbled backward, and though it stayed on its feet, its head was spinning. It swayed back and forth, clearly confused.
But Conkeldurr couldn't take advantage of this opening. Dragonite's Thunder Punch had gotten it, and with a bit of bad luck, it was now paralyzed. Not only was its speed cut, but when it tried to use another move, the electricity in its body stopped it from moving at all.
The two Pokémon stood there, frozen like statues.
The room went quiet. Now it was a waiting game to see which one would recover first and finish the fight.
"Go, Conkeldurr! You can do it!"
"Snap out of it, Conkeldurr!"
Chuck's students started cheering. This was the most likely chance for a win in all three matches, and they really didn't want to see Conkeldurr get defeated. If Dragonite won, it would be a clean sweep, which would be a huge blow to their gym's pride.
After about ten seconds, both Pokémon recovered at the exact same time and instantly attacked.
Conkeldurr used the Fighting-type move Hammer Arm.
Dragonite used Aqua Tail.
In a split second, both attacks hit their mark.
WHAP! BAM!
Before anyone could see what happened, both Dragonite and Conkeldurr were sent flying backward, landing hard on the ground at the same time.
Huh!?
The students stood up, staring nervously at the field. But after a long moment, neither Pokémon got up.
The student acting as the referee looked from side to side, then decisively raised his flags.
"Conkeldurr and Dragonite are both unable to battle! The winner of this gym match is the challenger!"
It was a draw that ended in a double knockout.
Natsui, Chuck, and all the students felt a little disappointed. For Chuck, all three of his Pokémon had been defeated. Even though the last round was a draw, it didn't change the fact that he had lost. Looking at the two unconscious Pokémon, his feelings were mixed.
So, he swept me after all...
But at least Dragonite went down too, which saved him a little bit of face.
Natsui walked over to Dragonite and gently held it. At the sound of his voice, Dragonite slowly opened its eyes.
"You did great," Natsui praised. "That Conkeldurr was really tough. You're amazing for being able to beat it."
It was true. Dragonite had single-handedly defeated two opponents and then fought Chuck's ace to a draw right after evolving. That was an incredible achievement.
Natsui heard footsteps. He looked up to see that Chuck had returned his Pokémon and was now walking over, clapping.
"That was an excellent battle! Congratulations, you've earned your victory!"
As he spoke, Chuck tossed a shiny badge toward Natsui.
Natsui caught it easily and opened his hand to look at it. It was the Storm Badge from the Cianwood Gym. The badge looked like a clenched fist, a symbol of power and fighting, but other than that, there was nothing special about it.
Chuck smiled. "Honestly, it's been a long time since I've had such an exciting battle, and even longer since I've let Conkeldurr fight. Thank you for the experience. I hope you'll come back to battle me with your own Fighting-type Pokémon one day!"
"I will!"
Erika walked over to Natsui's side. She took the badge, looked at it for a moment, and then put it away safely in Natsui's badge case.
Just as they were about to say goodbye and leave, Chuck suddenly held up a hand to stop them. Seeing Natsui's confused look, he laughed heartily.
"It's getting late. Why don't you stay and have lunch with us before you go?"
