While Natsui and Dragonite were happy, Chuck's expression became much more serious.
Even after raising the difficulty and sending out Machoke, he still lost. This young man was really something special. In his mind, he had to rate Natsui's skill even higher.
It had been a long time since he'd lost two matches in a row. To save a little face in front of his students and to win back a round, he knew it was time to show his true strength.
While everyone watched, confused, he quietly left the room. When he returned, he was holding a Great Ball.
Standing back in the trainer's area, he couldn't help but shake his head with a bitter smile.
"I thought I wouldn't need this one after becoming a Gym Leader. I never expected to fight alongside it again."
Hearing him talk to himself, Natsui focused on the Great Ball. Even though Chuck didn't say it, everyone knew it must contain his strongest Pokémon.
"Teacher..."
A few of the older students saw the ball and gathered around, their voices a mix of excitement and nervousness.
"Is that... your ace Pokémon inside?"
"Teacher! I've never seen you use it before! Are you finally going to let it battle!?"
"I've only heard how strong it is! I can't believe I finally get to see it today!"
Hearing his students' excited chatter, Chuck sighed and rubbed the Great Ball, as if remembering something from the past. After a moment, he came back to his senses and waved them away.
"Alright, we can talk later. We shouldn't keep the challenger waiting!"
Once the field was clear again, Chuck threw the Great Ball with all his might.
POP!
A flash of blue light, and a strange Pokémon that looked like an old man holding two concrete pillars appeared before Natsui.
What is that...
Since he didn't recognize it, Natsui took out his Pokédex and aimed it at the Pokémon.
Pokédex: "Beep. Conkeldurr, the Muscular Pokémon. A Fighting-type. Conkeldurr can use its brute strength to freely swing the two concrete pillars it uses as crutches, skillfully using a variety of moves. When it gets serious, it will throw its pillars aside and pounce on the enemy with its bare fists. It is said that humans learned how to make concrete from Conkeldurr 2,000 years ago."
Conkeldurr, huh...
This wasn't a Pokémon from Kanto, Johto, or Hoenn. You could only find them in regions like Unova. He didn't know much about it, only that it evolved from Timburr to Gurdurr, and then into Conkeldurr.
This had to be the ace Pokémon that traveled the world with Chuck when he was younger. To bring out a Pokémon he kept hidden away, Chuck was clearly giving it his all.
Natsui looked at his eager Dragonite. It was full of fighting spirit and didn't seem hurt, so he decided to let it continue the battle.
"Let's do our best, Dragonite."
Dragonite turned and gave him a firm nod.
On the field, the two Pokémon stood facing each other. Conkeldurr stood as still as a mountain, living up to its elderly appearance. In contrast, Dragonite was like a restless rookie, flapping its small wings and hovering in the air, incredibly excited.
At the referee's signal, the match officially began.
Unlike before it evolved, Dragonite now had arms and legs, and it immediately charged in for a close-range fight. The moment the referee's flag dropped, Dragonite rushed at Conkeldurr like a gust of wind. It was the Normal-type physical move, Extreme Speed, which strikes the opponent with lightning-fast speed.
Conkeldurr wasn't fast enough to dodge and took the hit head-on. But before it could be knocked off its feet, it gripped one of its pillars tightly, using the weight to steady itself.
Then, with incredible strength, Conkeldurr swung its other pillar in a perfect circle, smashing it into Dragonite.
BAM!
The blow sent Dragonite flying backward. It flapped its wings wildly to regain control in the air, barely managing to stay inside the battlefield.
Just from their first exchange, both had taken damage, but it looked like Conkeldurr had a slight advantage. It really was an ace Pokémon, on a different level from the newly evolved Dragonite.
"Dragonite, stop acting on your own!" Natsui shouted when he saw Dragonite about to charge in again. "Listen to my commands! Use Thunder Wave!"
Hearing its trainer's voice, the excited Dragonite finally started to calm down. As it approached Conkeldurr again, its two thread-like antennae shot out bolts of electricity that snaked toward their target in a wavering path.
Conkeldurr remained calm. It simply planted its concrete pillars in front of it. The Thunder Wave hit them and disappeared completely. It had used the pillars to ground the electricity.
He's really experienced...
With that plan failed, Natsui quickly switched to a different attack. At his command, Dragonite began flapping its wings, gathering energy to create a Twister.
But before the move could fully form, a concrete pillar flew through the air and hit Dragonite squarely.
THWACK!
Caught by surprise, Dragonite was hit in the stomach. Luckily, it had enough padding there that it only fell to the ground with minor injuries. However, the Twister it was forming completely vanished.
Natsui frowned. From the start of the battle, Dragonite was slowly losing ground. Conkeldurr was using its concrete pillars for both offense and defense, causing a lot of problems.
This isn't good...
As he thought, he saw the pillar that had hit Dragonite roll to the side. An idea sparked in his mind.
If the pillars were Conkeldurr's greatest advantage, then he just needed to get rid of them.
"Dragonite, quick!" he shouted. "Throw that pillar out of here!"
