"Grandpa, the monkey doctor you talked about is here!" the little girl shouted toward the main house as she led the way, completely ignoring the blush on Professor Elm's face.
"You silly girl!"
An old man rushed out of the house, scolding her. "Don't say such rude things in front of our guests!"
"Huh?" the girl blinked innocently. "But... isn't that what you told me to call him?"
"Ahem..."
The old man choked, then quickly walked over and covered the girl's mouth. He gave Professor Elm an embarrassed smile. "Sorry about that, Elm. This is my granddaughter, Chie. She's too young to know any better and just says whatever comes to mind. Please don't mind her."
Professor Elm scratched his cheek, trying to act casual. "It's... it's nothing. Long time no see, Mr. Kurt."
To change the subject, the old man turned his attention to Natsui and Erika.
"And who are these two?"
Natsui was also looking at the old man. He was wearing traditional clothes, with graying hair and thick, dark eyebrows that were slightly upturned. His eyes were sharp, and his wrinkled skin made him look very serious. Any child passing by would probably be too scared to even breathe.
Professor Elm explained, "I asked these two to help me research the GS Ball. This is Natsui, this year's Indigo Conference champion, and the young lady next to him is the Gym Leader of the Celadon Gym in Kanto."
"Oh?" The old man looked them up and down. "Quite the impressive pair. It's amazing you were able to get them to come."
Professor Elm quickly shook his head. "You misunderstand. I didn't invite them. I just ran into them by chance."
Then, he introduced Kurt to Natsui and Erika.
"This is Mr. Kurt. Though he's retired now, he's still a famous master of handmade Poké Balls."
He makes Poké Balls?
I see. No wonder Professor Oak sent the GS Ball to him.
"So you're Natsui!" Kurt said, looking at him with recognition. "I've heard about you from my son. Since you're from Kanto, you must know Professor Oak."
Natsui nodded. "Professor Oak is a very respected and trustworthy elder. I'm lucky enough to know him and have received his help a few times."
Kurt laughed. "I've known him since we were young! Tell me, does he still write those embarrassing poems? And that woman Agatha, we're old acquaintances too!"
With these connections, the atmosphere became much friendlier. But Natsui was still curious why someone would be named Kurt, which literally meant "Steel."
"You mentioned your son... who is he?"
Kurt replied, "He works at Silph Co. He's a fool who only knows how to make Poké Balls with modern technology. I heard you saved them when their headquarters was attacked by Team Rocket."
Well, that brought them even closer.
Kurt invited them into the main house, and Chie served them hot tea before sitting quietly to the side. Her eyes kept drifting to Erika. She thought the pretty lady sitting next to the man was beautiful no matter how she looked. Her every move was so elegant and graceful, just like the high-class ladies her grandpa always talked about.
Just then, Kurt brought over a red cushion. On it sat a strange Poké Ball that was half gold and half white.
"This is the GS Ball," he said with a sigh.
Hearing this, both Elm and Erika leaned forward to get a closer look. Natsui had never seen it in person before either, but since he already knew its secret, he wasn't very surprised. He glanced at it, saw that it looked just like he remembered, and then took a sip of his tea.
Ouch! Hot!
He put down the cup and looked out into the courtyard, where a large Apricorn tree stood, full of round fruit. These Apricorns were used to make handmade Poké Balls; through a series of steps like heating, hammering, and cooling, they were then specially processed into a finished ball. Seeing that, it really did seem like Kurt's son had gone against tradition by working at Silph Co.
The sound of Professor Elm and Kurt's discussion pulled Natsui's thoughts back. Professor Elm was turning the GS Ball over in his hands, frowning deeply.
"I heard this ball can't be sent through a PC?"
"That's right," Kurt nodded. "That's what's so strange. Usually, only old-fashioned, handmade Poké Balls can't be transported by modern machines."
Professor Elm raised an eyebrow. "But based on its material, it doesn't look handmade. I'm sorry, Mr. Kurt, but I can't tell anything just by looking at it. It seems we'll have to use some equipment to test it."
Kurt was a little disappointed but still hopeful.
"Sigh... We can't open it, and it doesn't react to any Pokémon. If we just knew who made it, all our problems would be solved. Unfortunately, neither Professor Oak nor Professor Ivy, who found it, know where it came from. They could only name it 'GS' based on the letters on it."
Professor Elm was surprised. "Even you can't tell who made it?"
Kurt shook his head. "I'm not the only craftsman in the world. There are many skilled people out there who aren't famous and use strange materials. If they don't leave a special mark, it's impossible to know who made it."
Seeing the two of them fall silent, Natsui cleared his throat. "Actually," he began, "I heard a rumor about a special kind of Poké Ball during my travels."
Instantly, everyone in the room turned to look at him.
Natsui said slowly, "I once heard that there's a special ball that is made by first weaving a Rainbow Wing and a Silver Wing into a capture net, which is then used to manufacture the ball itself. This ball was specially made to catch a very rare, legendary Pokémon. It's one of a kind."
