Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: The Pitiful Dratini

Actually, being brought here by a Dragonite was not a unique case. In fact, both Ash and Goh from the Journeys series, as well as ordinary shipwrecked sailors, have been rescued by them before.

Hearing Natsui's thanks, the Dragonite all squinted their eyes and smiled, letting out cheerful cries.

Dragonite are kind-hearted by nature. If they find a ship in distress at sea, they will guide it to shore. Moreover, they are strong and powerful, and it's said they can circle the globe in just 16 hours, making them an incredibly fast Pokémon!

Seeing that Natsui was fine, the Dragonite slowly dispersed, leaving him there just like that. They neither paid him any mind nor watched his every move, seemingly not at all worried that he might cause some kind of disturbance!

Seeing this, Natsui shook his head helplessly.

With a personality like this, it's no wonder their habitats are shrinking, and the Dragonite population itself has become increasingly rare, to the point where it's almost impossible to encounter a wild Dragonite on any continent now!

Looking towards the island's interior, it was clear that besides these few Dragonite, there were many more of their kind in the forest, as well as many of their unevolved forms—Dragonair and Dratini.

These Pokémon moved about everywhere, searching for berries and living carefree lives. What was even rarer was that none of the Dragonite showed any hostility or resistance towards humans.

He took out his phone. Just as he expected, there was no signal at all.

After taking a few photos as mementos, Natsui shook the raindrops off his body and walked towards the interior of the island.

At that moment, Haunter emerged from his shadow.

It looked at the surrounding Dratini and Dragonair, clicking its tongue in wonder.

"Say, Dratini and Dragonair are both so slender and slim. Why is it that after evolving into Dragonite, not only does the color change, but the body becomes so stout and chubby?"

"There's nothing strange about it. After all, this world can't be explained with common sense," Natsui said, shrugging. "Actually, if you ask me, I feel like Milotic is a more fitting evolution for Dratini and Dragonair!"

"Oh?" Haunter asked curiously. "Why do you say that?"

"I'm not just referring to their body shapes and appearances," Natsui said, then asked a question in return. "Have you heard of the ability Marvel Scale?"

Haunter shook its head, "Never heard of it. What's that?"

Natsui smiled, "Pokémon with this ability get a defense boost when afflicted with a status condition. It's an extremely rare ability. And looking at all the species of Pokémon, only Milotic, Dragonair, and Dratini—only these three—have the Marvel Scale ability. So, you understand the connection, right?"

A meaningful smile appeared on Haunter's face, "Oh, oh, oh! I get it!"

Just like that, stopping and starting, Natsui walked with a leisurely mood until he reached the bottom of a waterfall.

The river water cascaded down, forming a clear, small lake. Between the smooth rocks, many Dratini were gathered, playing, resting, and chasing each other. It seemed this was their nest.

Seeing Natsui and Haunter, these Dratini didn't seem scared of strangers at all and curiously approached them.

Although they were shy by nature, with so many Dratini gathered together in their familiar nest, it made them much bolder.

"Everyone, come on out and play with them too!"

Natsui tossed his Poké Balls, and all of his Pokémon, including Zapdos, were released.

Seeing these various types of Pokémon they had never seen before, the Dratini were extremely excited, circling around them endlessly. Natsui's Pokémon were also very happy, playing cheerfully with them.

Just then, Natsui suddenly noticed a Dratini in the corner, curled up all by itself, peering over at them with a look of both envy and fear.

Following his gaze, Haunter also saw that Dratini and asked, puzzled, "Why is it over there all alone? Is it being isolated by its peers?"

"It doesn't quite look like it's being isolated. It seems more like it's afraid of me."

As Natsui spoke, he cautiously walked towards it.

Sure enough, upon seeing Natsui approach, the Dratini backed away fearfully.

Seeing this, Natsui could only give up and returned to his original spot.

The sound of footsteps came from behind as several Dragonite walked over from a distance. Seeing so many Pokémon playing with the Dratini, they all nodded happily, and their gazes towards Natsui became even friendlier.

When they got closer, Natsui said to Haunter, "Could you help me ask them what's wrong with that Dratini?"

Haunter turned and communicated with the Dragonite. It wasn't long before it relayed the story to Natsui.

"It's quite a sad story, actually," Haunter sighed. "This Dratini's mother left the island and never came back. Ever since then, it's been like this, unwilling to interact with its own kind or leave the nest, and its personality has become more and more withdrawn."

Natsui had a soft spot for these kinds of touching stories about life and death. His heart filled with pity, and he looked at the Dratini with great sympathy, "Did something happen to its mother?"

"Not really," Haunter said, shrugging. "I heard she ran off with a trainer's Dragonite. A few of them saw her a few months ago, and apparently, she's living very happily."

"Ah, this..." Natsui's face was full of shock. How did a perfectly good tragedy turn into a TV drama in the blink of an eye?

"She abandoned her child and ran off with someone else!? Okay, just pretend I didn't ask anything."

Although the mother was alive and well, for some reason, after hearing the story, he felt that the Dratini had become even more pitiful.

Abandoned at such a young age, turned into an orphan—ah, no, it should be an orph-gon? To encounter something like this, it really deserved sympathy.

With that thought, Natsui turned, rummaged through his backpack, and pulled out a can of food. He walked over to the Dratini and opened the lid.

Instantly, the aroma of the food wafted in front of the Dratini.

"Don't be scared. This is really tasty. Come on, have a try."

In the distance, Ivysaur tilted its head, feeling that this scene was very familiar.

The Dratini sniffed deeply a few times, its stomach growling. After holding back for a long time, it finally gave in to the temptation of the food and crawled out of its hole.

It approached bit by bit, and seeing that Natsui had no ill intentions, it couldn't resist quickly snatching the can and retreating back into its hole to eat heartily.

Taking this opportunity, Natsui moved a few steps closer and said softly, "I don't really know how to comfort you, but life as a dragon is unpredictable. You should try to look on the bright side. Think about it, at least your mother is living happily now, isn't she?
