"Good morning, Mrs. Brown."
I looked up from my phone and saw Maria bowing politely at me.
"Maria."
The last time I'd seen her was the day Damien fired her in the elevator. I'd told him he was no different from his father after a huge fight.
He'd told me he hired her back, but that was the first time I'd seen her since.
She fiddled with her fingers, her head bowed.
"I wanted to thank you for helping me get my job back," she said.
The doors chimed close; I pressed the open button so it wouldn't shut it her face.
"Maria, I didn't have anything to do with that," I said.
She shook her head. "Mr. Brown told me the only reason I got my job back was because of you, ma'am."
I bit back a smile. "Did he now?"
It was kind of flattering if you thought about it. Damien had the reputation of being a perfectionist; one who wouldn't hesitate to let go of an employee for making one simple mistake.
Him reversing that decision was a huge deal.
"Also, I wanted to apologize for—"
