Dazzling streaks of agonizing spell light abruptly appeared and vanished in the gloom, and within the silent, dense forest, the rumbling sound of trees breaking and falling to the earth, along with crashing explosions, continuously echoed.
The two combatants continuously and swiftly repositioned themselves on the rugged terrain, utilizing fallen trees, vines, bushes, and all other obstacles to gain a slight advantage.
Only half a minute had passed since the life-or-death duel began, and Amos-ta had already confirmed two things.
Firstly, the black-robed witch he was fighting was indeed targeting him, and her killing intent was strong.
She showed no hesitation in using dark magic, including the three Unforgivable Curses, which are explicitly forbidden by the Ministry of Magic, as well as numerous restrictive spells that cause either death or severe injury upon contact, seeking only to kill him as quickly as possible.
This was utterly absurd. Amos-ta's face turned green, and fury blazed in his eyes!
Who on earth harbored such deep hatred for him, wanting to put him to death?
Secondly, the black witch's practical combat experience was indeed extensive; at least, Amos-ta admitted he was inferior.
During their brief exchange, her dazzling, nimble footwork for dodging spells was like that of a dance master. Furthermore, her various deceptive attack methods, her ability to launch surprise attacks during high-intensity confrontations, and her skillful combination of Transfiguration spells, tactical spells, and dark magic left Amos-ta no choice but to marvel!
In comparison, Amos-ta, who only secretly practiced dueling techniques and occasionally sparred with Professor Snape, could only be considered a novice.
Of course, he also had his powerful advantages.
If Amos-ta were to evaluate it, this battle was a duel between an assassin and a master.
This unknown black witch was like a meticulously trained assassin. To her, all spells and attack techniques were merely tools for killing; she sought only proficiency, not mastery.
But Amos-ta was different. He had always been dedicated to delving into the essence of magic, and he had found a unique path in tracing the origins of modern spells. As long as he persevered, he would surely achieve results that would astound the world in the future.
Most of the spells he used were improved versions, carefully considered and experimented with hundreds of times. They possessed immense power and were difficult to directly block. Their only drawback was that they consumed a lot of magic.
Amos-ta already regretted the spell he had initially used for intimidation, which consumed a significant portion of his magic but had no effect.
The black witch cast a Disillusionment Charm on herself during the duel. Although her magic couldn't be hidden, it certainly made it difficult to pinpoint her exact location. Moreover, this method, combined with constant displacement and silent casting techniques, allowed for virtually face-to-face sneak attacks.
Fortunately, Amos-ta's learning ability was strong. He imitated her method and quickly learned this technique. This resulted in the two dueling in the Forbidden Forest appearing more like two transparent ghosts flinging spells at each other!
Whoosh!
Surging Fiendfyre furiously gushed from behind a half-shattered rock on the uphill slope. It grew with the wind in mid-air, instantly transforming into an overwhelming wave of fire. Fire dragons, sphinxes, chimaeras, and various other flame-mimicking beasts roared silently atop the fiery wave.
The black witch had no intention of controlling the Fiendfyre. She allowed this terrifying flame to expand wildly, burning everything, while she rapidly changed positions and concealed herself.
Amos-ta's lips were tightly pressed, his eyes filled with hatred.
At his current level, he couldn't directly extinguish Fiendfyre. However, he couldn't just stand by and watch the spreading Fiendfyre engulf the Forbidden Forest. Otherwise, the unlucky little lions of Gryffindor would probably all perish under the Fiendfyre.
Amos-ta swiftly waved his wand, also scattering a golden flame into the air. This flame was derived from Fiendfyre, which Amos-ta had modified and restricted. Although not as dominant as Fiendfyre, it was easier to control and wouldn't adversely affect his sanity.
Using fire to combat fire was a clever way to control it.
Amos-ta controlled the flames to isolate that wave of fire. He increased his magical output, intending to gradually consume the Fiendfyre.
"I don't want to imagine what happened there, Snape. How many lives will be lost!"
Looking at the golden and white flames that illuminated half the sky in the direction of the Forbidden Forest, Professor McGonagall's lips were tightly pressed, her face terribly pale. She completely abandoned her Deputy Headmistress's dignity and ran wildly, not even bothering to tidy her usually immaculate bun, which had completely come loose.
Snape's face was sallow, no better than Professor McGonagall's. Since the night Lily died, after so many years, for the first time, he found himself praying again in his heart!
At the castle gates, Professor Flitwick stumbled down a step, awkwardly tumbling. Professor Sprout, who had even lost her hat, merely helped him up as she passed, then without a word, rushed towards the Forbidden Forest.
Whoosh, whoosh!
After a long stalemate, the black witch, unable to kill Amos-ta, resorted to even more despicable means. She transformed a pile of shattered rocks into sharp daggers, then controlled a dozen of them to attack the Gryffindor students whom Amos-ta had moved to an open area!
"No matter who you are, I will make you pay a price you'll never forget!"
Rage almost shot from Amos-ta's eyes. His right hand, which was suppressing the Fiendfyre, remained steady. His left hand threw a milky white orb of light.
The orb reached Bill and Charlie's location before the daggers. In an instant, it expanded into a hemisphere, forming a transparent, inverted bowl-shaped magical barrier. In the nick of time, it blocked the incoming daggers.
Even the black witch was caught off guard by this move, freezing in place for two seconds.
And these two seconds became the key to victory or defeat!
Amos-ta abruptly withdrew his right hand, his wand trembling rapidly. The stones beneath his feet instantly transformed into a long spear, its surface stained with verdigris, which shot out like a cold bolt of lightning, almost instantly appearing in front of the black witch.
Clang!
In the nick of time, the black witch summoned a light wall shrouded in black mist. The light wall collided with the long spear, emitting a deafening clang like a striking gong. Immediately, both dissolved into specks of light.
Although it was blocked, this incredibly powerful impact caused a surge of magic within the black witch's body, and her consciousness momentarily blanked.
"Sectumsempra!"
Amos-ta, finally seizing the opportunity, let out the loudest roar since the battle began. The invisible void then erupted with a crisp clang, and in an instant, the Grim Reaper wielded its scythe and descended above the black witch's head, decisively slashing down with cold fury!
On the other side, Snape, who had just entered the Forbidden Forest, heard the familiar, violent roar. His body swayed uncontrollably, his face turning from sallow to ashen. The next second, he once again gathered all his strength and ran wildly.
