One month had passed since that intense elevator encounter with Monica. Two excruciating months of separation, with her expertly evading me at every turn. Jason and Michelle had become her personal early warning system, alerting her whenever I left my office or visited Darren's room, giving her ample time to disappear.
Paula had returned for another week-long visit. Saturday would bring our critical audit meeting, seemingly approaching its conclusion. But today brought an obligation I dreaded – accompanying the insufferable Murphy to her first ultrasound appointment. The thought filled me with nothing but irritation.
