Morris's POV
The morning had barely begun when my office phone rang. I recognized Michelle's voice immediately, her tone apologetic.
"The demon wants to speak with you."
There was no avoiding this conversation. I exhaled slowly as Michelle transferred the call, and Eddie's grating voice filled my ear.
"How dare you humiliate my daughter like that? She came home yesterday completely distraught! Sick with worry and embarrassment after the way you treated her in front of everyone. Morris, you're going to be her husband—my daughter deserves respect and proper standing."
My knuckles turned white around the receiver. "What standing would that be exactly, Eddie? The standing of someone who deliberately took advantage of a drunk man to get pregnant and trap him into marriage? Because that's precisely what she deserves."
"Don't you speak about my Murphy that way!" Eddie bellowed.
"Have you forgotten who signs your paychecks?" I countered coldly.
