Chapter 11 - Chapter 11. Searching for a ferry

The sun had just begun to rise over the horizon as Noah stood on the balcony of his mother's house, watching the early morning light reflect off the sea. The rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the shore was both soothing and energizing. After a brief respite at home, he was now ready to continue his journey.

His Pokémon were rested, and his mother had seen him off with a warm breakfast and well wishes. With a wave goodbye, Noah set out towards Petalburg City to continue his adventure, the familiar path now seeming more like a beginning than a return.

Petalburg City had always been a place that held many memories for Noah. The quiet streets, the gentle flow of the river, and the bustling market area—every corner of the city felt familiar. He didn't need to linger long in the heart of the city; instead, he quickly made his way to the Pokémon Center to restock on supplies.

The soft beep of the scanner as he checked out the latest batch of Poké Balls and medicinal items felt oddly comforting. He needed to ensure he had enough to make it to Dewford Island and possibly through more battles.

As Noah walked out of the Center, his eyes scanned the town's docks. It wasn't long before his gaze caught the sight of some familiar faces. Ash, May, Max, and Brock were standing near the ferry terminal, looking perplexed and deep in conversation.

Noah walked over, smiling as he approached. "Hey, I didn't expect to see you all here."

"Ah, Noah! Just the person we need!" Ash said, grinning widely. "We're looking for a ferry to Dewford Island, but it looks like we missed the last one."

Max sighed dramatically, his arms crossed. "Petalburg's supposed to have regular ferry service, but it looks like we're out of luck. No one's willing to take us."

Noah raised an eyebrow and shook his head. "Actually, you're wrong there, Max."

Max frowned, giving Noah a skeptical look. "What do you mean 'wrong'?"

"You're right about one thing—there are ferries that go to Dewford, but you're not looking at the right people," Noah explained, his hands on his hips. "Petalburg is a port city. There are plenty of people here who do business around the sea. If we search, we'll find someone willing to help us out. Either they'll be going there, or we'll find someone willing to take us for the right price."

Ash raised an eyebrow. "You really think so?"

"I'm sure of it," Noah said, giving a confident grin. "We just need to split up and search the docks, the fishing area, maybe even check out the harbor-side taverns. We'll find something."

May nodded, a thoughtful expression on her face. "That makes sense. I'm going with you, Noah."

Max glanced at Ash and Brock, then back at May. "Hey, wait a second! Why do you get to go with Noah? We're supposed to stick together!"

But May had already started walking toward the docks with Noah by her side. "I don't mind. It'll be quicker if we split up anyway."

With that, Ash, Brock, and Max went off toward the far end of the docks to search, while Noah and May set off in the other direction.

As they walked, the cool breeze from the ocean carried the scent of saltwater and fresh fish, invigorating their spirits. The two trainers were chatting about their recent experiences. May shared stories of her travels, while Noah told her about the Pokémon he had met along the way, including his encounter with Norman and his time spent training.

May laughed, clearly enjoying the conversation. "You've really had a lot of adventures. I can't wait until I get to travel some more."

Noah smiled. "It's definitely an interesting , that's for sure. You get to learn so much, not just about the Pokémon, but about yourself too."

But just as Noah was about to respond, he felt a slight tug at his bag. He turned to see Grimm, his mischievous Impidimp, had somehow slipped out of his Poké Ball and was rummaging through May's bag.

"Grimm!" Noah said, taking a step toward the impish Pokémon. Grimm glanced up, his eyes wide with exaggerated innocence.

May gasped, stepping back, her face suddenly turning pale. "What is that thing? Is it a Pokémon?"

"It's an Impidimp," Noah explained, though he was far more concerned with Grimm's current antics. "I'm sorry, he's a bit of a troublemaker."

Grimm, sensing he was caught, made a dramatic display of sulking and hanging his head low. But it was clear to Noah it was all just an act.

May sighed. "I didn't expect a Pokémon to be sneaking around in my bag. You need to keep that one under control, Noah."

Noah chuckled and gently bonked Grimm on the head. "You're really testing my patience, buddy."

Grimm let out a small grumble, clearly offended by the reprimand, and waddled over to Noah's side, keeping his distance from May.

"Well," May said, taking a deep breath, "since we're on the topic of food, I think I've earned a little break. How about we try Petalburg's famous pastries?"

Noah nodded. "Sounds good. Let's grab a snack while we search for that ferry."

They walked through the streets, the smell of baked goods wafting from nearby shops. May picked out a small bakery and they grabbed a few pastries to share. The atmosphere was lively, and Noah found himself enjoying the conversation with May, even as Grimm continued to sulk in the background.

As they wandered further along the docks, they eventually spotted a ferry docked at a smaller pier, partially obscured behind a cluster of boats. A man was sitting at the helm, and he didn't seem to be in a hurry.

Noah approached the man and greeted him. "Hey there. Are you headed to Dewford Island?"

The man looked up from his fishing rods, squinting at Noah. "Dewford, you say? Aye, I am, but I'm leaving tomorrow morning, not today."

"Is there any way we can get on board today?" Noah asked, hoping the man could be persuaded.

The man scratched his chin, considering. "I could take a few extra passengers if the price is right. But we'll have to leave soon, or the tide will be too strong for a safe trip."

Noah turned to May, who had been listening quietly. She raised an eyebrow as she noticed the hesitation on his face.

"Do you think we should go for it?" May asked.

"I've got enough to pay for our fare," Noah said, though the idea of spending a significant portion of his money made him uneasy. He still had to feed his Pokémon, and the cost of food was starting to add up.

"Let's do it," May said, her enthusiasm infectious. "I think it'll be worth it."

Noah agreed, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he'd have to make up for this expenditure somehow. Maybe more hunting. He was certain that a few more wild encounters would provide just what they needed.

After paying the fare, Noah and May began to prepare to board, but before they did, they decided to go back and check on Ash, Max, and Brock.

May couldn't help but smile smugly as she found the trio still searching. "We found the ferry," she said proudly, giving Max a teasing glance. "Looks like you were wrong after all."

Max groaned in frustration, while Ash and Brock simply shrugged, seemingly used to the back-and-forth between May and Max.

"Well, at least we're ready to go," Ash said. "Let's just get on board before it leaves without us."

With a shared laugh and a final wave goodbye to the city of Petalburg, the group made their way to the ferry, ready to set sail for Dewford Island.

The ferry gently rocked with the rhythm of the sea, its wooden hull creaking softly under the weight of its passengers. The sun had begun to dip lower in the sky, casting a warm orange glow over the horizon, as the ship made its way out of the bustling Petalburg harbor. The scent of saltwater filled the air, mingling with the cool breeze that swept over the deck.

Noah leaned against the rail, his eyes following the play of the waves as they lapped against the sides of the ferry. May stood next to him, her Torchic perched comfortably in her arms, eyes closed against the breeze. Aeris, Noah's Pidgey, fluttered gracefully above them, her wings beating rhythmically as she soared higher into the sky.

"Feels nice to be out on the open sea, huh?" May said, her voice light, but there was a glint of excitement in her eyes.

Noah nodded, his gaze still focused on the horizon. "Yeah, it does. It's different from the forest and the cities… It's calming."

May smiled. "It really is. I've always liked the sea. I'm excited to reach Dewford. There's so much to explore there."

"I've heard that too," Noah replied, his thoughts momentarily drifting to the battles he was sure to face. "A lot of strong trainers there."

Ash, who had been standing nearby, overheard the conversation and joined in, stepping up beside them. "That's right! Dewford's known for its battle culture. I'm ready for some intense matches!"

Max, standing with Brock at the other end of the deck, looked up at Ash, rolling his eyes. "You say that every time, Ash. Maybe you should focus on actually winning your battles first."

Ash shot Max a playful glare. "Hey, I do win!"

"No, you don't," Max retorted, crossing his arms with a slight smirk. "You lost to Misty, remember?"

Brock chuckled and gave Ash a friendly pat on the back. "Give him a break, Max. Ash's enthusiasm is what makes him a good trainer. Besides, it's not always about winning right away. It's about learning from every battle."

Ash grinned, clearly pleased with Brock's words. "Exactly! That's what I love about Pokémon battles. You learn something new every time."

May turned to Noah, her Torchic fluffing up its feathers as it nuzzled into her arms. "So, how's your team coming along? Have you been catching a lot of new Pokémon?"

Noah smiled. "I've caught a few new ones. There's Impidimp, my Grimm, and a Nosepass, who I've named Tide. Grimm's always causing trouble, though."

May giggled. "I bet he's a handful."

"He's certainly a handful," Noah agreed, his voice tinged with amusement. "But he's good at keeping things interesting."

Ash leaned in, his curiosity piqued. "What about your other Pokémon? Any evolutions yet?"

Noah hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. "No evolutions yet, but Aeris, has been growing pretty fast. I think she might evolve soon."

May raised an eyebrow. "You think so? That would be awesome! A Pidgeotto would look great with you."

"I guess we'll find out soon enough," Noah said, glancing up at Aeris. The Pidgey flew in wide circles above the ferry, her wings slicing through the air with ease.

"Just be careful with Aeris," Brock said from his spot with Max. "Flying Pokémon have a lot of power in their wings. If you're not careful, they might end up knocking someone out without even meaning to."

"Noted," Noah replied, giving Aeris a glance. She was high in the sky, still circling, unaware of the conversation below.

Max grinned. "I'd say I wouldn't want to be hit by her wings, but I've already been hit by one of Ash's Pokémon too many times."

Ash laughed sheepishly and Pikachu made a sheepish face from ash's shoulder. "Sorry about that, Max. I'll try to be more careful."

May chuckled and turned her attention back to Noah. "So, what's your goal, Noah? You've traveled a long way, so I'm guessing you're not just passing through."

Noah looked at her, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "I'm looking to become a stronger trainer, learn as much as I can, and experience different regions and cultures. But more than that, I want to understand my Pokémon better, you know? I want to know more"

May nodded in understanding. "That's a really good reason. I feel the same way. It's not just about winning battles—it's about growing with your Pokémon."

"Exactly," Noah agreed. "And the best way to do that is to face challenges, meet new trainers, and discover what you're capable of."

Ash, overhearing the last part of their conversation, grinned. "I know exactly what you mean! That's why I keep traveling. Every challenge is a chance to grow."

"That's the spirit, Ash," Brock said with a chuckle. "You'll never stop growing as long as you keep pushing forward."

Noah looked over at Brock and nodded. "Thanks, Brock. That's what I'm trying to do—keep moving forward. Even if the journey gets tough."

The conversation continued, with May talking excitedly about her adventures and the Pokémon she had encountered. Her Torchic chirped in response, obviously happy to be a part of the conversation.

Noah's team, meanwhile, seemed content and at ease. Grimm had perched himself on Noah's shoulder, his usual mischievous energy now subdued after his earlier antics. Tide, the Nosepass, stood at Noah's feet, looking out over the water with a quiet, curious expression. Aeris, still flying high, occasionally swooped down to circle the group before returning to her position above.

After a while, the group's conversation shifted to Dewford.

"I can't wait to battle at the Dewford Gym!" Ash said eagerly. "I've heard the Gym Leader there is tough, but that's exactly what I want!"

Brock nodded in agreement. "Brawly, the Dewford Gym Leader, is known for his fighting-type Pokémon. You'll have to bring your A-game if you want to win."

"I'm looking forward to it," Ash said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Fighting-types are strong, but they're not unbeatable."

Max, who had been silent for a while, spoke up. "I'm not sure if I'm ready for that kind of battle just yet. But I'll definitely try to train harder."

Brock gave him an encouraging smile. "You'll get there, Max. Just keep working at it. Every trainer has to start somewhere."

May added, "That's right! And even if you don't win your first battle, you can learn from it."

Noah couldn't help but smile at their camaraderie. Despite the challenges and the competitive nature of their journey, there was always room for encouragement and growth among friends.

"Hey, Noah," Ash called out, pulling Noah from his thoughts. "Do you want to join me for a practice battle when we get to Dewford? I'm sure we'll both learn something from it."

Noah thought for a moment. He wasn't sure if he was quite ready for a battle with Ash, but the idea of learning from someone like him was too good to pass up. "Sure, I'm up for it."

May smiled and playfully nudged Noah. "Looks like you've got yourself a challenge, Noah. Hope you're ready."

"I'm always ready," Noah said with a confident smile.

As the ferry continued its journey, the conversation shifted again, this time to their plans once they arrived at Dewford. The group was eager to explore the island, but Noah couldn't help but feel the anticipation building inside him. Dewford Island held so much promise—new Pokémon, new trainers, and, of course, the Gym. He couldn't wait to see what challenges lay ahead.

He looked out at the sea, his eyes catching the gleaming light on the water's surface as the ferry sailed steadily toward their destination. With each passing moment, he was one step closer to the next chapter of his adventure.
