Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: The Cost of Secrets

The city was restless, caught between the promise of summer and the memory of storms. Elian woke to the sound of rain tapping on the window, a gentle rhythm that belied the tension simmering beneath the surface of the network. He dressed quietly and made his way downstairs, finding Mina already at the stove, the scent of coffee and frying onions filling the air. She greeted him with a tired smile and a plate of eggs, her eyes searching his face for signs of rest.

He sat at the counter, watching as the team filtered in one by one. Jin and Rosa argued over the best way to slice bread, Kestrel and Yusuf traded updates on the comms, and Marcus limped in with a fresh bruise on his cheek, grumbling about a run-in with a Yakuza scout. Mira sat by the window, her gaze distant, lost in visions she didn't share.

Breakfast was a quiet affair, the usual banter subdued. Elian felt the weight of unspoken worries—the safehouses that hadn't checked in, the new faces who watched every door, the sense that something was slipping through the cracks.

After the meal, he called a meeting in the storeroom. The map of the city was littered with new pins—red for threats, blue for allies, green for safehouses. Kestrel pointed to a cluster of red pins in Queens. "They're moving faster. We lost contact with two more shelters last night."

Yusuf frowned at his laptop. "And someone's probing our network. Not just the Yakuza—someone with real skills. They're looking for patterns, weaknesses."

Marcus crossed his arms, his voice low. "We need to know who. If there's a mole, we're all in danger."

Elian nodded, feeling the pressure build. "We tighten security. No one moves alone. We rotate codes daily. If anyone hears or sees something, you tell me. No secrets."

Jin glanced at Mira, whose silence had grown more pronounced in recent days. "You okay?" she asked gently.

Mira flinched, her hands trembling. "I… I saw something. In a vision. Someone close to us—someone we trust. They're hiding something. If we don't find out what, people will die."

The room went silent. Elian's heart pounded. "Who, Mira?"

She shook her head, tears in her eyes. "I don't know. The faces were blurred. But it's soon. Maybe tonight."

The team exchanged uneasy glances. Elian looked at each of them, searching for answers and finding only fear.

He dismissed the meeting, but the tension lingered. Throughout the day, he watched his friends more closely. He noticed the way Marcus avoided his gaze, the way Yusuf double-checked every message, the way Kestrel's jaw clenched when she thought no one was looking. Even Mina seemed distant, her smiles a little too forced.

He pulled Marcus aside after lunch. "You want to tell me what happened last night?"

Marcus hesitated, then sighed. "I was followed. Lost them near the river, but… I think they tagged me. I checked my clothes, my bag—nothing. But I can't shake the feeling."

Elian nodded. "We'll sweep the place, just in case. Next time, you call for backup."

Marcus managed a wry smile. "Didn't want to worry anyone."

"You worry me more when you keep secrets," Elian said, clapping him on the shoulder.

Later, Elian found Kestrel in the alley, twisting a piece of scrap metal into a spiral. "You holding up?" he asked.

She shrugged. "I can handle the Yakuza. It's the not knowing that gets to me."

He sat beside her, watching the rain. "We'll figure it out. We always do."

As dusk fell, Yusuf called Elian to the comms station. "Got something. Someone's pinging our network from inside the block. They're using a burner phone, bouncing the signal off three towers. It's smart—real smart."

Elian's blood ran cold. "Can you trace it?"

Yusuf nodded. "I'm on it. But if they're close, we need to move."

Elian gathered the team in the kitchen. "We've got a leak. Someone's feeding information to the Yakuza. We don't know who, but we're going to find out. Until then, no one leaves alone. No one answers the door without backup. We lock down the network."

Mina's voice was steady, but her hands shook as she poured coffee. "We'll get through this. We always do."

That night, Elian barely slept. He sat by the window, watching the rain, listening for footsteps in the alley. Around midnight, Yusuf's voice crackled through the comms. "Got it. The signal's coming from the old bakery on 47th. Someone's inside, right now."

Elian woke Marcus, Kestrel, and Jin. They moved through the rain-soaked streets, hearts pounding. The bakery was dark, the windows boarded up. Elian motioned for silence, and they crept inside.

A figure crouched by the back wall, typing furiously on a laptop. As Elian approached, the figure spun, eyes wide with fear.

It was Theo.

He dropped the laptop, hands raised. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to. They said they'd hurt Emily. I thought I could keep them away from the diner if I just gave them safehouse locations. I never told them about here, I swear."

Jin's voice was cold. "You could have gotten us all killed."

Theo sobbed. "I know. I'm so sorry. I just wanted to protect my sister."

Elian knelt beside him, anger and pity warring inside him. "You should have trusted us. We could have helped."

Theo shook his head. "I was scared. I thought if I told you, they'd know. They said they were watching."

Kestrel picked up the laptop, scanning the messages. "He's telling the truth. He only gave them old locations. Nothing new."

Marcus sighed. "We can't risk it. We have to move everyone. Tonight."

They returned to the diner, waking the others. Within an hour, the network was on the move—safehouses emptied, routes changed, codes rotated. Mira sat with Theo, her voice gentle. "You did the wrong thing for the right reason. But you're still family."

As dawn broke, Elian stood on the rooftop, watching the city wake. The cost of secrets was high, but the price of trust was higher. He knew there would be more betrayals, more hard choices. But as long as they faced them together, there was hope.

He closed his eyes, letting the rain wash away the fear. Tomorrow would bring new dangers, new secrets. But tonight, the network held. And that was enough.
