Chapter 13 - Chapter Twelve: Shared Secrets and Heartbeats

📣 Public Declaration 📣

Whispers traveled faster than spells at the Salvatore School. One moment, things were quiet; the next, the entire student body buzzed with hushed tones and scandalous whispers.

The news about Nova's pregnancy spread like wildfire through the halls of the Salvatore School, igniting whispers and wide-eyed stares. Students gawked. Some tried—and failed—to be subtle. Conversations halted when she entered a room. Glances turned sharp or curious. A few offered awkward smiles or silent nods of support. Others clearly didn't know what to make of it. The most talked-about incident? Nova walking up to Jed, socking him in the face, and kneeing him in the balls for spreading gossip—an act Nova proudly confirmed was both completely true and absolutely deserved.

Hope noticed it all.

She walked beside Nova with her hand lightly brushing the other girl's back, a silent stake of ownership and protection. If anyone looked too long, she stared them down. If they whispered, her magic stirred just enough to make them flinch. She didn't need words to remind them who Nova belonged to now.

Nova tried to act unaffected, chin lifted in practiced indifference, but Hope could see the tension in her shoulders. The strain.

The cafeteria practically vibrated with speculation.

"Did you hear?"

"It's gotta be Mikaelson's."

"Wait, was that even possible?"

"Someone said Nova's new here, but if she's that far along, she and Hope must've known each other before she transferred. The timeline doesn't add up."

But no one dared ask directly—not when Hope was sitting beside Nova like a sentinel, her hand protectively resting over Nova's as if daring someone to try her. And the moment a first-year cracked a joke about the baby being a literal spawn or mini-Mikaelson monster, Hope turned and stared them down so hard their pudding cup exploded.

Someone had started a betting pool about them weeks ago. Now the stakes had doubled—how far along was Nova? Was it a girl or boy? When would Hope punch someone? And more secretly, how many teachers were in on the pool?

Then, loud enough for everyone to hear, Hope raised her voice. "Since it seems the whole school already has an opinion, let me make something clear. Nova's pregnant. And if anyone thinks they can mess with her, they're welcome to find out what happens when you screw with a Mikaelson."

A stunned hush fell.

Followed by a collective, "Holy shit."

Someone from the crowd added, "That shifts the odds!"

A second later, giggles and whispers followed. The betting pool had just gotten interesting.

Hope noticed the stares. She noticed everything. But the only thing she did was pull Nova's chair closer and kiss her temple without breaking eye contact with anyone who dared to whisper.

Hope leaned in and muttered under her breath, "Well, that shut them up."

Nova smirked. "If not, I'm sure you scowling at them will."

Nova leaned into her without comment, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

đź’¬ A Call to Mom đź’¬

Later that afternoon, Hope found herself pacing in front of her bed, that Nova was laying on, inside her shared dorm room, phone pressed tight to her ear.

It rang twice.

"Hey baby," Hayley answered warmly. "What's up?"

Hope didn't even try to ease into it. "So... I have a girlfriend now."

Hayley chuckled, though there was a trace of skepticism in her voice. "Okay! Love that for you. Anyone I know? Or should I be bracing myself, considering what happened last time with Roman Sienna?"

Hope rubbed her forehead and let out a breath. "It's... complicated," she said slowly, her voice tight with hesitation. "And before you ask—no, this isn't anything like what happened with Roman. Not even close. But it's still the part you're going to freak out about."

There was a pause.

"Oh no. You're not in trouble, are you?"

"I... I knocked someone up. She's having my baby."

Silence. A long one.

"I—what?! Are you serious right now?"

Hope rushed to add, "She's amazing—like really kind, super smart, and pretty in this ridiculous way—even though she swears she isn't, which only makes her even more gorgeous. And she's brave in this quietly badass way that makes you believe in good things again. Plus, she's adorkable—like the biggest dork ever in the best way possible. I love teasing her just to see all the ridiculous expressions she makes. Her face scrunches up, her ears go red... it's the cutest thing. I mean, not that I've known her forever or anything, but... she's great. Anyway...I gotta go!"

And she hung up before Hayley could get another word in.

Nova blinked. "That was the most chaotic way you could've handled that."

Hope grinned. "I panicked."

Hope leaned against the wall, flushed and out of breath like she'd just faced down a demon. "That went well," she muttered to herself.

She dropped the phone on the bed and groaned.

"Better than I thought," Hope muttered, flopping down beside her. "I think."

Nova raised an eyebrow, arms crossed and a smirk playing on her lips. "That went well? You do realize your mom's not going to just let that go, right? She's your mom, Hope—she's going to hunt you down for answers. And probably tell the rest of your family too. Should I be worried about a supernatural family interrogation squad showing up, storming the school and breaking down our dorm room door?"

Hope groaned and flopped back onto the bed. "God, I hope not. But yeah... probably. If I know my mom, she's already dialing up Aunt Freya, and by tomorrow, the entire Original family group chat will know. Should I be worried about you running when my crazy vampire relatives show up?"

Nova smirked, snarky as ever. "Why would I run? I already kicked Jed's ass twice while pregnant. I think I can handle your family... probably." Her tone was teasing, but her eyes flicked toward Hope with a hesitant edge—like she was gauging just how serious this was becoming. Hope caught the flicker, her protectiveness flaring, and held Nova's gaze longer than before. Something unspoken passed between them—uncertainty, yes, but something steadier too. A growing certainty they hadn't dared name yet.

🩺 Doctor's Visit 🩺

Hope didn't give Nova a choice.

"We're going to a doctor," she said firmly. "You haven't been seen by anyone since we got here, and I need to know you're okay. Both of you."

Nova grumbled but eventually agreed.

Later that week, Hope insisted Nova see a real doctor for a check-up. Not a supernatural healer. Not a spell-weaving midwife. Just a regular, normal doctor.

"I'm fine," Nova grumbled in the car. "You're making a big deal out of this."

"You're almost three months pregnant, Nova," Hope said as she gripped the wheel. "And I want actual medical confirmation that you're fine."

They drove into town together, Hope clutching Nova's hand the entire way. Nova didn't say much, but her fingers tightened around Hope's a few times. Her usual snark was absent, her silence louder than anything.

"I'm not nervous," Nova muttered as they sat in the waiting room. "I'm just… calculating the probability of this being a mistake."

"You're practically vibrating," Hope teased gently, her voice warm.

"I'm not vibrating." Nova shifted. "I'm… just warm."

Hope leaned in, her voice low. "You're adorable when you lie."

The clinic in town was discreet. Clean, simple, quiet. Dr. Elena Gilbert-Salvatore greeted them with a warm smile, clearly used to dealing with the supernatural crowd without asking too many questions.

Elena greeted them with a professional but kind smile. "You must be Nova," she said, shaking her hand. "And Hope. Alaric told me to expect you."

Nova sat on the crinkly white paper of the exam table, fidgeting. Hope held her hand, even when Nova tried to pull away.

Elena checked vitals first. Took blood, measured Nova's belly, asked a lot of questions.

"Any pain?"

"Nope."

"Fatigue?"

"Yes, but that's normal right?"

Elena smiled. "Yes. Let's take a quick ultrasound."

Nova laid back on the exam table, one hand on her stomach. Hope stood by her side, her hand finding Nova's instinctively.

Elena applied the gel with a practiced motion, then started the ultrasound.

Nova turned her head away, chewing the inside of her cheek. Her body was tense.

Hope leaned closer. "Hey," she whispered, brushing Nova's hair back. "I'm right here."

Hope held her breath as Elena prepared the machine. She turned the screen toward them and moved the wand across Nova's belly.

"There," Elena murmured, pointing at the screen. "Heartbeat is strong. Actually..."

She paused.

Hope and Nova tensed. "What?" they asked in unison.

Elena looked between them. "There are two heartbeats."

"Two?" Nova said slowly.

Elena nodded. "Two heartbeats. You're having twins."

Nova blinked. "Twins?"

Nova's eyes widened, her face draining of color. "No. Nope. That's… no."

Hope's mouth opened, closed, then opened again. "Twins?"

Hope nearly dropped her phone.

Nova's mouth opened, then shut. She looked like she was short-circuiting.

"Twins?" she said again.

Hope squeezed her hand. "Deep breaths, babe."

"I can't even manage one of me, and now I've got two?"

"You've got me," Hope said, voice soft but firm. "We've got this."

Elena looked gently amused. "It's too early to tell the gender yet. But…"

Nova winced. "There's always a 'but.'"

Elena said firmly. "Everything looks perfectly normal. Well, aside from the elevated heart rate. Nova, I'm seeing signs of stress. I need you to take it easy. I mean it, Nova. Stress levels matter. And with twins, even more so."

"No more training?" Nova guessed.

"No more training. No heavy lifting. No contact sports. No prolonged standing. And definitely no excessive heat. Nothing strenuous, or we're looking at complications." Elena's tone brooked no argument.

Nova groaned. "So you're saying I can't even lift a bag of flour? You're killing me."

Hope made a mental note to make sure Nova followed those rules to the letter.

Hope's expression darkened. "I'll make sure she behaves."

Nova rolled her eyes. "Don't act like you won't use this as an excuse to hover."

Hope smirked. "It's not hovering if I'm literally under doctor's orders."

Nova muttered under her breath. "I can't believe it's twins."

Hope leaned in. "I can't believe I'm going to be a mom times two."

Elena handed them printouts of the scan, and Nova stared at the blurry images like they might suddenly start speaking.

"Looks like the fun is only beginning," Hope whispered.

Nova looked down at her stomach and mumbled, "What the hell is it going to feel like when I'm six months in?"

Hope kissed the side of her head. "We'll figure it out. Together."

Outside the clinic, Nova was still staring blankly at the printout of the ultrasound.

"Twins," she said.

"Are you okay?" Hope asked gently.

"I'm gonna get so fat."

Hope kissed her cheek. "Yeah, but you'll be a hot mom. And they're going to be perfect."

Nova smirked. "I was already perfect."

"True. Now you're just spawning more perfection."

They walked back to the car, their hands entwined, the ultrasound tucked safely into Nova's jacket.

Neither said it aloud, but they were both thinking the same thing: this was real now. Tangible. A future they'd started building one heartbeat at a time.
