Chapter 18 - No Matter The Cost

The Ghost of Ottawa sat on the edge of his bed. His mind was anywhere but within reality; however, as he got up and made his way into the bathroom, the mirror told him what he had to do. As he put on the royal blue suit, which he'd laid out the night before, he picked up Archie's watch and the Greater Ottawa leader's pin. They weighed nothing to the average person, but to the Ghost, there had never been a heavier burden he'd ever had upon his shoulders.

Once he'd finished getting ready, the Ghost left the Reddick Mansion in the Autowa and made his way to Crossbridge Church. There, he went over a few things with the funeral director, then took his place beside Archie's open casket. He looked at his Grandpa with eyes lost in the many memories they'd made together. Looking up, he signaled for the director to open the doors and let the public inside. As people came and shook his hand, the Ghost put on a smile, just like Archie and Patricia had taught him to. Once everyone was seated, the Ghost was invited to speak. As he took to the pulpit, he looked out at the city of citizens, new allies, and those he called friends. "My Grandpa wasn't a perfect man, but as his faith tells us, none of us are perfect. That said, Archie was a hero, a hero I have chased after, longed to be like, and held in the highest regard..." As the Ghost spoke, the city listened, some cried, others nodded, but most looked at the Ghost with a tenderness in their eyes. After the service, the Ghost and the city went to the cemetery and buried Archie alongside his wife, Patricia, and infant son, Craig. However, rather than a luncheon, the Ghost went to Washington Park, where the Greater Ottawans were awaiting him. As the Ghost took the stage, he took off his blazer, set it on a chair, and took to the podium.

"My citizens, while we mourn the loss of Archie, there is no time to waste. I hereby decree that Greater Ottawa shall have changes. While I have followed in Archie's footsteps, I plan to create a legacy, not just for myself, but for us, for you, my people. I shall be implementing Mastocracy in its complete form within Greater Ottawa. You have all placed your faith in me to lead you, to be your protector, and I am replying to your faith with my resolve. In this world, we still know so very little. Magic rivals medicine, rune rival electricity, and we must adapt to survive. Archie kept us safe, but I shall be the one to cement our position in this world." As the Ghost stopped, he raised his fist in the air, resulting in cheers from the citizenry...

Throughout the next several months, Greater Ottawa's focus on safety shifted to one of ambition. The Holy Kingdom had lost its Empress and best army of Angels and Demons. However, there were new and stronger factions emerging. On the world map, four major landmasses were home to four major powers after the decimation of the Church of Humanity. In the East, the Dwarves and Lycanthropes had been locked in a power struggle. Neither side was gaining ground, that was until the Southern region had settled its dispute. There, where the Church of Humanity had ruled supreme, demi-human races united under a single banner and had decided to take up arms against the Elven nations nearby. In the West, there were Dragonlords and Demonlords who'd been infighting with no hope of reaching stability anytime soon. However, nobody had expected anything out of the Northern region, and their dismissal of the North would cost them dearly.

In the North, the newly established Greater Ottawan Union, led by the Ghost of Ottawa, had brought their philosophy of Mastocracy to this world in force. It was a government system that was based on merit, skill, and rights. Under the Ghost's leadership, the Ghost was forging a nation profoundly different than anything this world had ever seen. The Greater Ottawan Union's alliance with the Dragonnewts of Igneous and the Dwarves of the Cobalt Mountain had ushered these newcomers into the spotlight, and they didn't disappoint. Rail lines were laid to both nations, and the trio exchanged knowledge, skilled laborers, and their resources. Under these conditions, Chiefess Inferna of Igneous, King Granite Blackenstone of the Cobalt Imperium, and Union Executor Ghost of the Greater Ottawan Union began campaigns of expansion. King Blackenstone and his forces began absorbing the other Dwarven nations surrounding them, and didn't stop until they were assisting the Eastern Dwarven nations in their fight against the Lycanthropes. Chiefess Inferna and her forces united the Dragonnewts and Lizardmen of their territory to form a full-fledged nation known as the Volcan Empire. Under this new banner, Chiefess Inferna took charge and assisted their ally, the Greater Ottawan Union.

While the Greater Ottawan Union was slow to start expanding, it was for good reason. To the West of them, there was the Slaveocracy of New Monatabi. As the Union directly opposed slavery, this was their biggest target. With the Ghost of Ottawa leading the offense, O-61 Defender II tanks and the multitudes of the Greater Ottawan Union's soldiers outfitted in Ottawan Military Powered Armor (O.M.P.A) marched on the Slaveocracy. With their warbirds and technology, they easily had the upper hand, not forgetting the Volcan Empire's troops having their backs as well. However, the Ghost of Ottawa wanted to send a clear message to anyone in the region who'd dare oppose them. Knowing this, the Greater Ottawan Union sent not only the Ghost of Ottawa to oversee this campaign directly, but also sent in their hidden trump card, Betsy Ross. The automaton, while limited to lasers and five-hundred-pound bombs as throwable munitions, was enough to send many of the Slaveocracy's military personnel running for the hills. As O-61s rolled into the slaver territory, the Ghost of Ottawa waved the Union's new flag. Retaining its green and white coloring, it now had an atom where its arrowhead had once been, and the atom was surrounded by thirteen stars on a background of green and white stripes.

As the Greater Ottawan Union marched deeper and deeper into Slaveocracy territory, it became clear why the Ghost of Ottawa was not a leader like the ones of this world...
