Chapter 3 - Greying Lines of Parallel Worlds

While Greater Ottawa adjusted to life with a five-story-tall automaton helping to deter the New World Order, something else was happening in a world that paralleled the dystopian reality the Ghost and the Ottawans had been accustomed to.

In this otherworld, the technology of machines, automobiles, planes, and such had never come to pass. Instead, magic had replaced electricity, and magic casters, adventurers, and demi-human races had risen where electricians, pioneers, and humanity had once been in the world of the Ghost. However, this world was no less abundant in despair, racked with the pungent stench of tyranny and oppression. In this world, Humanity had devolved into savagery and depravity. Kings and Monarchs of all kinds within humanity enslaved demi-races at their leisure. Beastkin, Dragonnewts, Harpies, Elves, Dwarves, the whole lot of fairytale creatures were the objects of humanity's cruel subjection. Each war mankind waged left more and more humans and demi-humans without homes, food, money, and their freedom.

Power corrupted the best intentions, money brought all manner of depravity to the doorsteps of humanity and demi-humans alike. While the entire world was like this, pockets of rebellion had broken out, all trying to overturn their fates. Despite these rebels' best efforts, they were outmatched in numbers and might. In particular, two cruel monarchs of opposing kingdoms had put their boots on the necks of anyone daring to utter words or thoughts of rebellion. In the West, there was the Holy Kingdom of Remsdale, a human kingdom. On the opposing side to the East, there was the Leo-Kin Imperial Dynasty, a Demi-human kingdom. Both hated the opposing side, but both rulers subjected their citizens to abject cruelty, unlike anything the Ghost and the Ottawans had ever witnessed in their world.

In the Holy Kingdom of Remsdale, King Johan Schröder the Eighth sat upon his throne. His court trembled at his displeased demeanor. "MINSTER! IF YOU FAIL TO PRODUCE RESULTS, I WILL HAVE YOUR HEAD!" Yelled the King. His Minister of Magi-Arts bowed and quickly rushed out to see to it that the King's demands were met. King Johan stood up and looked out of his Castle windows. "That worthless minister shall bring me otherworlders... or he shall see his last view swinging from the gallows." While King Johan glared out of his windows, Minister Kensington ordered his casters and summoners to begin the ritual, unaware that the Leo-Kin Imperial Dynasty and their Magi-Arts users were doing the same thing. As magic circles overtook grey, stormy skies, they began interlocking, warping, and amplifying the circles' radii. Both Ministers' eyes widened in horror as the magic circles were now large enough to capture a whole city. Both tried to stop the process, but it was far too late.

Back in Greater Ottawa, golden beams of light had sealed in the entire city, Lasalle Lake, and the small town of Marseilles, Illinois. The citizens were panicked. Dr. Sue and the science teams of Greater Ottawa had no explanation for this. At the same time, Archie, the Grandfather of the Ghost, and elected leader of Greater Ottawa, tried to maintain order and calm the citizenry. However, in a blinding flash of what could only be described as nuclear light, Greater Ottawa, the Lasalle Lake power plant, and the Ottawa E-Strike Base all vanished from the map without a trace. The entire city, its citizens, their tech, and all had been ripped from their world into a foreign one, a world unlike anything they'd ever experienced. However, they didn't land between the two warring kingdoms; instead, Greater Ottawa had settled into the northern region, in an area known to this world as the Ruins of Klondike Valley. It was similar to Ottawa's natural geography, hosting two rivers, a lake, and open fields. However, this story is far from a simple "summon to another world" trope... as this was now open-survival or forced extinction of the Greater Ottawan Mastocratic Society as a whole.
