Chapter 28 - The first son's secret

Episode 28: The First Son's Secret

Location: Luna Estate – Underground Safe Room

The lights flickered again.

Evan knelt between her sons, arms wrapped tightly around both.

Elio's head rested on her lap. Kai sat stiffly, fists clenched, sensing the chaos above.

"They're attacking everything," he whispered. "They're not even trying to take hostages."

"That's the point," Abel said grimly, pressing his weight against the door. "They want to wipe it all clean."

Zane's voice crackled through the earpiece. "Perimeter is down. Nathaniel's drones turned against Cassandra's failsafe. It's chaos out here."

Evan didn't respond. Her thoughts were locked in a deeper place… one she'd buried long ago.

---

Flashback – Six Years Ago

Evan stood in the clinic, trembling, holding the test in her hand.

Positive.

She didn't know his name.

That night was supposed to be a drunken escape, not the start of a life.

She remembered the man's cold eyes, the way he'd touched her like she was a stranger he owned for a moment. She didn't even get a name.

She almost ran. Almost ended it.

But then the nurse had handed her a sonogram photo.

A heartbeat.

A tiny flutter.

And Evan made a promise to herself—and to the child growing inside her:

"No one will ever hurt you like that again."

Present Day – Safe Room

Elio stirred in her arms.

"Mom…" he murmured. "What happened to my dad?"

The room froze.

Evan's eyes widened. Her throat closed.

Abel stood still—watching her. He already knew the answer. But Elio didn't.

Evan swallowed hard. "Sweetheart… you were born from something I didn't understand. Someone I didn't know."

Elio frowned. "So… he's not…?"

"No," Evan said, her voice thick. "Abel isn't your biological father."

Elio blinked. "But I thought…"

"I met Abel after you were born. He didn't give you life, but he gave you everything else. He fought for you before he even knew you."

Abel stepped forward and knelt.

"Elio," he said softly, "I love you more than blood ever could."

Elio looked between them. "Does that mean I'm broken?"

"No," Evan said fiercely. "It means you were born stronger than most. You came from ashes and made me whole."

Elio's eyes watered. He turned and hugged Abel tightly. "You're still my dad."

Abel's arms shook as he held him back. "Always."

Elsewhere – The Estate

Gunfire echoed through the compound.

Nathaniel moved like a ghost, disabling drones, sabotaging Cassandra's escape routes, redirecting enemy fire.

He wasn't fighting for himself anymore.

He was fighting for the sister he failed. And the nephews he never deserved.

Zane met him in the east corridor.

"You'll die out here, you know," Zane muttered.

Nathaniel shrugged. "So be it."

Together, they charged toward the central server.

Back in the Safe Room

Suddenly—

The door blew open.

Evan dove on her sons. Abel raised his gun.

But it wasn't the enemy.

It was Emrys—bleeding from the shoulder, panting.

"They're in the labs. They're going for the embryos."

Evan's stomach dropped. "What?"

"She was working on more. Cassandra had other versions—unborn, unstable. Someone wants them."

Kai stood. "We can't let them have it."

"Stay here!" Evan snapped.

But Kai shook his head. "They were going to replace me with them."

Evan's voice softened. "That's why you matter more. Because you chose who you are."

Kai looked at Elio, then back at Evan.

"I'm with you. Always."

Final Sequence – Biogen Lab

Smoke poured from the vents. Security alarms screamed.

Inside the lab, a cloaked figure smashed glass tanks one by one—destroying every embryo.

Nathaniel burst in, face pale.

"Stop! That's the future—"

The figure turned.

It was Cassandra.

Bloodied. Burned. Laughing.

"You think you've won?" she shrieked. "I built a legacy. I made gods!"

"You made monsters," Nathaniel said coldly. "And now I bury you with them."

He pulled the pin from a flash grenade.

Cassandra lunged—

Boom.

---

Scene: Ruins of the Lab

Later, smoke curled into the sky. The compound was scorched. But the family—was alive.

Cassandra's body was never found.

But her files were gone. Her embryos—destroyed.

And Nathaniel?

He was barely breathing when they pulled him from the rubble.

As he slipped into unconsciousness, he looked at Evan and whispered:

"I'm sorry I wasn't your protector. I hope I can be theirs."

And then—he flatlined.
