Chapter 18 - Coercion (威压, Wēiyā)

Coercion is an invisible force exuded by a cultivator, a manifestation of their cultivation level, spiritual energy, and willpower or some author will call it with 'Pressure'. When a powerful cultivator releases their Coercion, it can create a suffocating pressure that bears down on those of lower realms, making it difficult for them to breathe, move, or even think clearly.

This overwhelming force can have severe consequences for weaker cultivators. When subjected to Coercion, low-level cultivators may experience a range of debilitating effects, depending on the disparity in cultivation levels. At its mildest, Coercion can cause dizziness, confusion, or temporary paralysis. However, if the difference in power is significant, the results can be much more dire.

Low-level cultivators exposed to intense Coercion may suffer from Qi Deviation (走火入魔, Zǒu huǒ rù mó), a dangerous condition where their internal Qi becomes chaotic and uncontrollable. This can lead to severe damage to their internal organs, as the body's meridians are unable to withstand the pressure. In extreme cases, the cultivator's foundation may be shattered, crippling their future cultivation prospects, or they may even die on the spot due to the sheer intensity of the Coercion.

The effects of Coercion are not merely destructive. Skilled cultivators can wield Coercion with precision, using it to suppress opponents without engaging in direct combat. For example, a high-level cultivator might release just enough Coercion to force an enemy into submission, rendering them unable to resist or fight back. Coercion can also be used to intimidate or control large groups of people, asserting dominance in a situation without lifting a finger.

In addition to its offensive capabilities, Coercion can be a valuable tool for testing the resolve and potential of other cultivators. A master might release a controlled amount of Coercion to gauge a disciple's endurance, mental fortitude, or readiness for a breakthrough. Those who can withstand the pressure are often seen as having strong foundations and the potential for great future growth.
