Chapter 24 - Shadows Beneath the Smile

Moments later…

"I GOT ABDUCTED BY THE PRINCIPAL???"

Before getting abducted, I looked at the weather with the sun shining as bright as ever. The reason I looked at the weather—specifically the sun—was so I could close my eyes.

Luna noticed the sarcastic side… I said something way beyond disrespectful. Regardless, she doesn't even remember it. The reason is that I brought up Ed's family.

The Hazen families. They're unique. Of course, it would be a straight-out lie if Ed's family doesn't adopt me soon.

So does that mean I'm gonna travel to the main house of the Hazen family? That's good news.

At the end of the day, it should be best if I don't talk about this to anyone.

Luna's eyes sparkled right before my eyes. Her face and even her skin were blazing light. She looked thrilled.

She tossed her hand right to my face. It landed on my cheek. As she did it again and again, I held her hands.

"What are you doing? Stop it, that's annoying."

She defended her chin with both her hands after she tossed my hands back, pulling away from my palms.

"I can't even say it's a Hazen family member… that's so—NO!! Very rare to hear."

I stood up from the bench.

"We might as well go… if you want, that is."

She stood up like a flash of light.

"Oka…ay."

I turned around, walking back to the hall. As I walked through the corridor, I looked at the architecture of the ground. It seems like it's one stone. The ground is way more above average ground.

Normally, grounds are made thanks to the earth magicians all using magic to create concrete and binding it to the specified place. As for this one, it doesn't seem like that at all.

The ground looks flawless and seamless, like one solid piece of ceramic—no cracks, breaks, or even lines to be seen.

Must be a high-level magic user who has done it. I have read about the school before getting into this academy. The school had been top ever since 500 years ago.

One of the reasons why? is because of someone named Isolde Frostbane.

Ritter Frostbane… a high-level magician who reached the very top of the mage world.

In the mage world, there are rankings.

The rankings are up to eight. Naturally, the first thing is being able to use magic. The first level, which everyone already manifested, is about using magic based on wands and some substitute objects.

Wands are way more accurate and perfect, so nobody actually uses the others like gloves and all.

The first stage is manifested fast. But the second needs more strength and mana.

At the second stage, most are capable of double or triple casting.

Though it's a casting, it tests the warrior's physical stamina and mana reserves alike, combining durability with raw magical force.

But no need to exaggerate it like warrior-level strength—the stage itself increases physical abilities and reduces damage.

The third one is all about high-level magic. The spell level is way beyond normal attacks. They are so gigantic.

As for the fourth one, it's all about non-intelligent monster summoning or creation. Earth magic can allow creating sand golems… but here comes the twist.

"THE FIFTH STAGE."

Its magic is mighty… it's way too extraordinary to be called magic. The user itself becomes magic. At this point, the user is the one that protects the magic.

Ritter Frostbane is one of those who was able to manifest it at such an old age, but they call it young—at age 50. He is the one that created the academy.

He created the academy for a reason. That's why the ground is so special.

Enough about the past. Luna has just been walking beside me silently.

As I was worrying what to say, she said something.

She gazed down at the floor while both her hands held each other outstretched.

"Hey… Jane."

"Yeah… something's wrong?"

"You seemed a bit… when you said to the Father 'What are you going to pray for.' I mean, I'm not opposing you. You even watched it, didn't you? I laughed."

"Look, you're being weird right now… I mean, how could I not respect him? This is just the way I talk."

"No, there is definitely a nostalgic feeling when I see you."

"Are you implying we have met before? You felt nostalgia when you saw that side of me?"

"Yes, that's it."

"I assure you, I'm not the one. The kid you are talking about isn't me."

She was talking about someone my age who is Ed's younger brother. They must have known each other.

'Well then, goodbye,' I said to her while she swung her hand, running towards the hall's entrance.

Happily turning around to go out of the academy, I was facing the hall's entrance… In split seconds, the moment I turned back, something hit my neck.

That something felt so hard to endure. My neck bone fractured—normal humans would have died. Even I would have been dead by now.

But I still had Machbone activated. Holding my last breath, saving it for my last attack, I slipped through the arm of the one who hit me in my neck.

This itchy feeling in my left leg and slowly to my left hand… there was poison in it.

This poison is paralysis poison. Maybe it's the reason why I'm feeling dizzy. In addition to that, my vision is already getting blurry.

As far as I remember, a white carriage. The principal was the one to do it. He held me in his hands and opened the carriage door.

He threw me into it while getting in and slamming the door of the carriage. He sat down, smirking.

I didn't know what happened, nor why this happened, but I knew it would have a connection to it. Just when I woke up…

The smell of the church perfume that I breathed in and out every day—when I was in the church.

The voice that I hated so much, desperately wishing to slaughter the throat of it.

Father Athos sat right in front of me. In a room filled with darkness, nothing was seen but felt.

He sat right before my eyes.

As he said, "You don't look very happy to see me, Jane… no… Jace. My beloved child."

Smirking his evil smile where his lips almost extended to his ears, his eyes open as well.

He took a dagger, blunting it with a knife.

CHANGING RIGHT TO MY HEAD.
