Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: A Teacher’s Philosophy and A Professor’s Duty

[POV: 3rd Person]

[Scene: Hokage Office]

[Track Change: Naruto 'Oh! Student and Teacher Affection']

"Meanwhile", Renjiro continued, "After Elementary school, children at ages 11-12 will move to Middle School where they spend 3 more years learning the history of the world, their country, their state, and maybe even their city. Along with learning a second language, literally analysis, intermediate mathematics like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, physical education with sports, and various elective courses like arts, music, and film.

These 3 years are made for children to find their specialty, what they are best at. This is like a Genin learning the path they will take to become Chunin, not becoming a Chunin.

That comes from High School, a 4-year time period where although there are core classes, the rest are decided by the student themselves, along with advanced courses for mathematics, and new courses like civil engineering and computer science. Graduation at 17-18 grants a High School diploma equivalent to a Chunin exam, a certification given by the school that allows one to enter the job market for training in many careers or the ability to pursue even higher education.

Colleges are private learning institutions where students learn highly specialized skills for their fields. They learn for another 4 years split over 8 semesters lasting 16 weeks, where students can take as many courses as they can schedule and handle each semester, mostly taking 4 classes at a time. Each class taken will end in a Chunin level equivalent exam at the end of each semester. Failing that exam usually means failing that course.

At the end of those 4 years, depending on what specialization was chosen, different courses are required to be completed by the end, then a Jonin level equivalent exam is given over all the knowledge from those specializations courses taught over those 4 years. Passing that exam allows one to graduate with a degree in their specialization. That is what it means to have a Degree in a specialization.

There are Master level degrees called a Doctorate, which grants the title of professor, involving another 4 years of specialized education, writing of thesis, and an acknowledgement from other professors, they are considered the pinnacle of their craft. While I might not be a professor, I have a high-level education and had been teaching professionally for almost a year before my death."

To say people were shocked would be an understatement. In Konoha, taking 5 years of education for a Genin sounded reasonable and normal, 7 years of experience to become a Chunin was on the edge of being considered talentless, but another 4 years of multiple Chunin exam level assessments to become a Jonin was beyond ridiculous. The amount of wasted resources would be immense, let alone the time taken to raise such a specialized Jonin level Ninja, such a Ninja would likely only be Jonin level in their specialty and likely low Chunin level in others, a Special Jonin in all accounts.

Renjiro noticing the shock, tried to calm the others by saying,

"Though my old life's education system would not work properly in this world, especially when peace is a luxury, certain parts might be good to think about possible implementation. In order to promote the growth of Genin level to Chunin level, the opening of a secondary Academy for new graduates would be a good start. The secondary Academy could host lectures on certain specializations, for example [Water Release] or [Kenjutsu], from current or retired ninja for a C-rank mission. 2-3 Lectures a day with a different topic for each before repeating next week if people miss out due to mission overlaps. This could act as education for Genins and for more experienced ninja, a source of income, a way to unwind from a particularly difficult mission, and even a source of inspiration, children have open minds and can often see things from angles adults with fixed mindsets cannot."

Asriel jumped in, "Lord Third, as a Professor in Ninjutsu your expertise and rich experience would be great for teaching not only young Genin, but also experienced Chunin and Jonin. You know better than most as a former Hokage how a learning environment can influence not only ones growth, but also their path, good or bad. As someone who taught the Sannin, one of whom taught a now Kage level ninja, Lord Fourth, that some or possibly none of them could have reached their current strengths without a good teacher, a good learning environment, resources, and inspiration from their teachers and peers.

Just because you have stepped down from the seat of Hokage, doesn't mean the current and next generation can't benefit from your teachings. Even if the secondary Academy is not created, many would benefit from even minor guidance, help fix a small mistake in a student's Ninjutsu, teach a Genin Chakra control, or even recommend a student to follow a certain path. A professor never runs out of students, as students will take any opportunity to learn from a professor."
