Chapter 31: Cheng Xin Arrested

The Emperor's Private Laboratory

The Droplet Detector and Light-Particle Weapon technologies received cursory examination before the Emperor set them aside. His vast intellect had already absorbed their fundamental principles—impressive by this universe's standards, yet merely incremental advances compared to the technologies He had witnessed across the galaxy.

His attention focused entirely upon the technical knowledge related to Microcosm construction.

The theories involved proved remarkably sophisticated. This universe existed as a bubble separated from the void by a supermembrane—what these humans termed the cosmic wall. Microcosm technology could breach dimensional barriers to create universes with reduced spatial parameters.

In essence, opening smaller bubbles upon the surface of the greater one.

Each Microcosm possessed independent temporal and spatial dimensions. Even should the macrocosm face destruction, the Microcosm would remain unaffected—a form of dimensional fortress that even the Ruinous Powers might struggle to breach.

The limitation proved equally significant: Microcosms contained only physical laws, no resources. All materials required importation from the macrocosm.

Furthermore, this technology inflicted measurable harm upon reality itself. Every universe possessed a critical threshold of matter loss. Exceed that boundary, and the cosmos would lose its regenerative capacity, condemned to eternal expansion until final entropy claimed all.

Yet if such technology could be perfected, refined to its ultimate expression... humanity would wield authority approaching that of the Creator Himself.

The sound of approaching footsteps drew His attention from these profound considerations.

Valdor entered the laboratory, offering the ritual salute of the Adeptus Custodes.

"My Lord, the individual designated 'Wallfacer'—Luo Ji—requests audience. He claims to possess intelligence of critical importance to Your person."

"Wallfacer?" The Emperor's knowledge of this universe included awareness of their desperate stratagem.

Faced with overwhelming technological disadvantage and constant sophon surveillance, Earth's previous leadership had implemented the Wallfacer Project. These individuals required no accountability, no explanations. They could mobilize vast societal resources to formulate strategic plans against the Trisolaran threat.

"He insists upon personal audience?"

Valdor inclined his head. "Indeed, my Lord. He claims his intelligence concerns the survival of both civilizations."

"Looks like you've become part of someone's master plan, Big Guy," the Raven observed with characteristic irreverence.

The Emperor considered this development with the patience of one who had witnessed countless schemes across ten millennia.

"Grant him audience."

Imperial Laboratory - Secure Conference Chamber

Luo Ji was escorted through multiple security checkpoints, each scan confirming the absence of weapons, surveillance devices, or concealed threats. The laboratory's defensive measures surpassed anything he had witnessed—automated systems that could detect molecular-level anomalies.

Upon crossing the final threshold, divine radiance filled his vision.

A figure wreathed in golden light awaited his arrival—perfect in form, bearing an aura of absolute authority that spoke to something fundamental in the human psyche.

"Your Majesty."

Luo Ji had been a committed atheist throughout his adult life. Scientific rationalism had guided his worldview, dismissing religious concepts as primitive superstition.

Yet faced with this being's presence, doubt crept into his convictions.

Perhaps divine entities did exist within this cosmos.

Unconscious impulse drove him toward genuflection, seeking to offer eternal loyalty to this transcendent figure.

"Do not kneel."

The Emperor's gesture released psychic force that prevented Luo Ji's submission. With destiny nodes altered by fifteen percent, the macrocosmic will's restrictions upon His power had loosened significantly, permitting limited psychic manifestation.

Shock registered across Luo Ji's features. The Empire's ruler possessed capabilities that exceeded scientific explanation entirely.

"What matter requires My personal attention? Have even you incorporated Me into your strategic calculations?"

Hearing this familiar phrase, Luo Ji displayed profound shame, shaking his head repeatedly. During his early tenure as Wallfacer, he had indulged in hedonistic pursuits, using that very excuse to deflect criticism from those who questioned his methods.

"Please forgive my previous absurdities, Your Majesty. This audience concerns genuinely critical intelligence."

"Ye Wenjie—the woman who initiated first contact with Trisolaran Civilization—shared two fundamental theorems that enabled me to establish cosmic sociology as a discipline."

Experimental equipment hummed in the background. The Emperor retrieved a data tablet, reviewing instrument feedback while maintaining attention to Luo Ji's report.

"Fascinating. Continue."

Luo Ji recognized the Emperor's dedication to His research. This audience represented time carved from urgent experimental work. He proceeded directly to his central thesis.

"Civilization's primary imperative is survival, followed by growth and expansion. Yet the universe's total matter remains constant."

"Physical laws and species differences create chains of suspicion between civilizations that prove nearly impossible to break."

"Every civilization harbors potential for technological explosion—sudden advancement that can alter the balance of power. Therefore, when civilizations discover each other, peaceful coexistence becomes extremely difficult. The ultimate choice invariably leads to mutual destruction."

"The universe is a dark forest. Every civilization represents a hunter carrying weapons. They move cautiously through darkness, and upon detecting any movement, they will fire without hesitation."

"Oh, Big Guy," the Raven interjected with wing-flapping enthusiasm, "a local villager named Luo Ji just shared the universe's fundamental truth with you—the Dark Forest theory."

The Emperor ceased His work, turning to regard Luo Ji with an expression that caused the man's thoughts to freeze entirely.

"The theory demonstrates considerable merit. However, I must ask: why should different species coexist peacefully?"

Luo Ji: "..."

In that moment, understanding dawned with crystalline clarity. He finally comprehended why the vast cosmos had devolved into a dark forest of mutual annihilation.

"It seems my concerns were misplaced and have provided you amusement," Luo Ji said quietly.

"Do not diminish your contributions. Your insights possess genuine value." The Emperor set aside His data tablet. "They complete certain conjectures I have been developing."

Having delivered his warning, Luo Ji requested permission to depart. He no longer desired involvement in humanity's salvation—only to return to his wife and children, to find whatever warmth remained in this cold universe.

After Luo Ji's departure, the Emperor fell into deep contemplation.

"What occupies your thoughts, Big Guy?" the Raven inquired.

The Emperor fixed His corvid companion with a calculating gaze. "I am considering whether the Dark Forest represents a consequence of this universe's excessive suppression of the Warp."

"Do the entities that wander beyond reality's boundaries serve another function within the cosmic ecosystem—specifically, cleansing civilizations to promote the cycle of existence?"

"The Warp and material universe maintain delicate balance. This cosmos suppresses psychic dimensions too severely, leaving only pure physical laws."

"Without malevolent forces to tempt civilizations toward self-destruction, their lifespans increase dramatically."

"Unable to escape their native universe, they wage constant war for resources and dominance, eliminating rivals through direct conflict rather than corruption."

The Raven grasped the Emperor's implications immediately.

"Like the relationship between predators and prey? This universe lacks wolves, so the herbivores overpopulate until environmental collapse becomes inevitable. Fascinating theory indeed. Perhaps after sufficient multiversal exploration, we'll uncover the truth behind such cosmic mechanics."

Earth - Underground Resistance Network

Cheng Xin joined the Earth-Trisolaran Organization, adopting the codename Maria.

Her unique status as the Girl Who Owned the Stars granted her tremendous influence among the general population. Many citizens rallied to the resistance specifically because of her involvement, transforming the movement into a significant force.

They raised banners proclaiming freedom, democracy, opposition to dictatorship and tyranny, attempting to incite popular rebellion against Imperial rule.

Numerous families and regional power structures, unwilling to submit to centralized authority, responded to these calls.

Conflicts erupted across continents as resistance cells struck Imperial installations and supply lines.

Videos and literature promoting Trisolaran Civilization while questioning humanity's motives circulated widely throughout human society.

"The Trisolarans seek only a place to survive; they desire no war."

"Having endured over two hundred chaotic eras purely for survival, such a resilient species deserves humanity's respect."

"Choose peace, not war."

"The Trisolarans never declared hostile intent; these claims represent deception by human leadership seeking centralized power."

Similar propaganda spread like wildfire through underground networks and sympathetic media outlets.

As the resistance movement reached its peak influence.

Imperial Strike Force Alpha

Thomas Vader adjusted the respirator system of his matte-black combat armor—a fusion of Three-Body world manufacturing techniques enhanced with Imperial modifications. The suit's angular plates and reinforced joints bore the aesthetic hallmarks of this universe's industrial design, yet subtle Aquila etchings marked it as something far more dangerous.

His hand rested upon the grip of his signature weapon: a plasma saber of his own design. In its dormant state, it resembled a traditional blade—curved like a talwar yet straight-edged like a katana, its monomolecular edge capable of cutting through conventional materials with surgical precision.

But with the activation of integrated plasma coils, the blade became something else entirely. Crimson energy wreathed the steel, raising its temperature to stellar core levels. In this mode, the saber could slice through virtually any known material—starship hulls, reinforced bunkers, even the exotic matter composites the Trisolarans favored.

The respirator's mechanical rhythm gave his voice a distinctive modulated quality as he addressed his strike team through the comm system.

"Target acquired. High-ranking ETO operatives confirmed within the facility. Remember, we need prisoners for interrogation. The girl with the stars takes priority."

Vader had located the primary stronghold through methodical intelligence gathering and systematic surveillance. His reputation for such operations had earned him recognition throughout the Imperial command structure, and a certain dark mystique among resistance elements who whispered of the black-armored hunter who moved like death incarnate.

He led the Imperial task force in a coordinated assault, breaching the facility's defenses with overwhelming force. The engagement proved brief but brutal. Resistance fighters, despite their ideological fervor, found themselves outmatched by tactical precision, superior equipment, and the terrifying efficiency of their black-clad leader.

Vader's plasma saber carved through defensive barriers like they were constructed from paper. Red light painted the walls as he advanced through the stronghold's corridors, his cape billowing behind him with each purposeful stride.

When the smoke cleared, numerous resistance members lay dead, their stronghold captured intact.

The surviving ETO leadership found themselves in Imperial custody, including Cheng Xin herself, who stared at the dark figure with a mixture of terror and fascination, unable to reconcile the almost mythical aura surrounding this enforcer of Imperial will.
