Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Robb

Robb found Myrcella in the courtyard, dressed in a cloak and gold and black. He bowed his head to her.

"Myrcella."

She smiled back at him. "Robb."

"Did you sleep well?" He asked her, he'd wanted to spend more time with her last night, but propriety had prevented him from doing so.

Myrcella nodded. "I did, thank you. Did you?"

"I did." Robb replied. Greywind yipped then causing Robb to blush.

"Forgive me, Greywind has been excited for this." Robb said, how his direwolf had known that they'd be going for a walk with Myrcella, he did not know, but the animal did.

Myrcella smiled and leaned down to stroke Greywind's fur. "Not to worry, he will be a good companion on our walk." She looked behind her to where a knight of the Kingsguard stood. "And he can keep Ser Arys company."

The knight in question coughed causing Myrcella to giggle. The sound was like music to Robb's ears. He extended an arm and asked. "Shall we?"

Myrcella linked her arm with his and looked at him. "Lets."

Robb stepped forward and walked under an archway which took them into another part of the larger courtyard. He looked around, wondering where to start. He noticed the old, abandoned tower that Bran usually climbed-much to their mother's disquiet- and decided to start there.

"Do you see that old tower there, Myrcella?" Robb asked nodding in the tower's direction.

"I do." Myrcella replied.

"That tower is believed to have been part of the original keep. The tower was built around eight thousand years ago by Brandon the Builder, the man who built the Wall. It was much grander back in his day. It is believed to have served as the main residence for the Kings of Winter until around the time of Brandon the Fourth, when a new keep was built." Robb said, drawing on the echoes of lessons that Maester Luwin had given him and Jon when they'd been bairns.

"Why did they change?" Myrcella asked.

"Nobody is quite sure, but it is possible that Brandon the Fourth did not think that the tower and its existing keep was big enough for his family. He had some twenty children after all." Robb said.

"20 children?!" Myrcella exclaimed.

"Indeed, it was something. But whilst the keep was allowed to fall into disrepair and was eventually torn down, the tower remained. Nobody is quite sure why, but it has remained this way for some time." Robb said.

"There is something similar in Storm's End." Myrcella said.

Robb looked at her intrigued. He had not heard much about Storm's End, indeed, father only had stories of the time he and the King had been at the Eyrie, nothing more.

"There was an old tower build by the first Storm King, with help from his wife's family. The tower stood for a thousand years before being ruined in a fight between two brothers. The remnants remain to this day. Sort of as a nod to what happened." Myrcella said.

Robb nodded. "Fascinating."

Myrcella giggled. "Sorry that wasn't very interesting was it?"

Robb shook his head. "No, it was." He found that he meant it.

Myrcella grinned. "You're sweet but you're not a very good liar, Robb."

Robb blushed.

Myrcella smiled again and said. "Please, continue on, I want to know more."

Robb smiled, he hadn't expected her to be interested, but perhaps she was?

"Well, after Brandon the Fourth decided to build his new keep and castle, the tower gradually became ruined as I've said. The only time that changed was during the period known as the She Wolves period."

"She Wolves period?" Myrcella asked.

"A period where there were some five potential claimants to Winterfell, no clear successor and five women all determined to have their preferred candidate on the Winter throne as Lord of Winterfell." Robb said.

"What happened then?" Myrcella asked.

"One of the ladies used the tower as a fortress. Using it to dictate orders and move men around. Even when her claimant lost control of Winterfell, she remained there. Barking out commands and causing chaos. It took the help of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire to remove her." Robb said.

"How did they get her out?" Myrcella asked.

"Nobody knows. She never spoke about it, and I don't think Ser Duncan ever did either." Robb replied.

"How interesting." Myrcella said.

Robb smiled and said. "Come on, there's more to see."

He walked past the tower and down a slight slope, stopping when they got to a small building.

"What's this?" Myrcella asked.

"Nobody knows." Robb said.

Myrcella looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

"This place has been here longer than there has been a Winterfell. It was here when Brandon the Builder decided to build Winterfell. It's been here forever." Robb said.

"And in all that time nobody has tried to see what's inside?" Myrcella asked.

"People have tried to see what's inside, but nobody has ever been able to get inside." Robb replied.

"Truly?" Myrcella asked.

"Truly." Robb said.

"Shall we try and get in?" Myrcella asked, something glinting in her eyes.

"We can try." Robb said, he moved toward the door of the building, but stopped when Myrcella said.

"Let's see if Ser Arys can open it."

Robb stepped aside as Ser Arys stepped forward, he put his back into pushing at the door but it wouldn't move.

"Maybe it'll move if we both do it?" Robb asked. He stepped forward and pushed against the door, but it didn't move.

"Let me try." Myrcella said.

Robb was about to protest against that when Ser Arys shook his head. The knight stepped back and allowed the Princess to step up to the door. She looked at Robb and said. "Together on three?"

Robb smiled bemused, he didn't think that this was going to work, but this would be fun. "On three." He agreed.

"One…two…three" they said together. On three they pushed against the door and with a scream it opened, and they fell inside.

"Princess!" Ser Arys called out sounding concerned.

"I'm fine." Myrcella said waving the knight away. Robb got up and helped her up. Her cheeks were flushed, and her hair was astray, there was a curl in front of her eyes. He moved the curl to the side.

"Are you sure?" He asked softly.

"I am." Myrcella replied smiling. "Are you?"

Robb felt a flutter in his stomach, he wasn't sure why. "I am fine." He managed to get out.

"Shall we go and see what's inside?" Myrcella asked.

"Let's." Robb agreed, he took her hand and led her into the building, Ser Arys at their heels and Greywind to Myrcella's side.

It was dark, very dark, Robb was relying on his sight, how he was able to see in this dark, he didn't know, but there he was. There was nothing here and he was about to suggest they turn back around when he saw it. A small figure, not overly large, but not a person. He moved closer.

"What is it?" Myrcella asked.

"I…I…do not know." Robb replied though for some reason he wasn't sure if he should move the thing or not.

"Let's go back." Myrcella said.

Robb nodded and turned around, he walked out with Myrcella and was about to say something when Myrcella spoke. "I think we should go back there with some light and see what that thing is."

Robb nodded, they set off back to the keep, and it was only as they got into the courtyard proper that he realised what Myrcella had said.
