Chapter 3: The Duel for Worthiness
Goblin turned to the village elder and said:
"I will take only one person from this village for the trial. But since I arrived, you don't seem too happy that Ian is the one. I respect your opinion.
If you think someone else is more worthy, name them. I'll hold a duel between that person and Ian, and the winner will earn the spot."
The elder's eyes lit up, as if he'd been waiting for this moment.
"My grandson, Jade, is only nineteen and strong enough to take down a bear on his own. He's clearly more deserving than some orphan who spends his days swinging a sword and never helps us hunt.
I'm sure Jade will defeat that boy in a single move."
Ian clenched his jaw, burning with silent rage. He gave a slight nod without saying a word.
Word of the duel spread through the village like wildfire.
Soon, the central square was packed with curious villagers eager to watch the match. Most believed Jade would win without a doubt. He was tall, broad, and powerful—like a bear. In comparison, Ian looked like a child standing before a grown warrior.
Even Ian felt a moment of doubt... but he swallowed hard and stood his ground, refusing to back down.
As the crowd grew quiet, Goblin raised his voice:
"Alright, everyone, listen up. I'll say the rules just once.
The winner of this duel will join my trial to select those who will fight with me in the Survival Tournament.
This is serious. The swords are real—so try not to kill each other.
Ready? Begin!"
Ian moved first, charging at Jade with speed and fury.
He launched a powerful downward strike, aiming to land the first blow. But Jade easily blocked the attack with his sword.
Then, with a swift kick to Ian's side, he sent him flying backward.
Jade laughed, turning to Ian with a smirk.
"Ian, I'm not one of those wooden dummies you train with. This time, it won't be that easy."
