The detention room was a graveyard of old desks and stale air. Fluorescent lights buzzed faintly above, making the silence heavier.
Ayan took the farthest seat, sliding into the chair with all the ease of someone who refused to acknowledge the weight of the moment. He crossed one leg over the other, cool, untouchable.
Kairo walked in a second later, door slamming shut behind him. He didn't choose the seat opposite. No — he dragged a chair until it scraped loud against the floor and set it down beside Ayan. Too close.
Ayan didn't flinch. He tilted his head, voice smooth.
"Running out of space, Alpha?"
Kairo smirked, leaning back, one arm draped across the chair as though he owned the air between them.
"Why would I sit anywhere else when the fun is right here?"
The clock ticked, obnoxiously loud. Each second stretched, twisting the silence into a rope pulled taut between them.
Ayan finally reached for the detention log to sign his name, but Kairo's hand shot out first, palm slamming lightly over the paper. Their sleeves brushed, skin sparking at the contact.
"Don't test me," Kairo said, voice low, almost a growl.
Ayan looked at him, calm and sharp as glass. "Or what? You'll lose the game before it even begins?"
Their eyes locked, heat simmering. Neither backed down.
Minutes bled into an hour, filled with nothing but the scrape of pens, the occasional shuffle of paper, and the weight of unsaid things pressing against the walls.
When the bell finally rang, signaling their release, Ayan rose first. He adjusted his uniform, collected his things, and glanced down at Kairo with a smirk that wasn't a smile.
"See you tomorrow, partner. Don't get too comfortable."
Kairo's grin spread, dangerous and hungry.
"Oh, trust me, Omega… tomorrow, I'll make sure you're anything but comfortable."
The door shut behind them with a thud that felt less like an ending and more like a trigger.
