The liver belongs to the Wood element in the Five Phases theory, representing the yang within yin.
Currently, the place with the densest Wood-element spiritual energy on the Douluo Continent is the Star Dou Great Forest. Bai Xu had to seize this opportunity to cultivate his liver, the organ associated with Wood.
It wasn't just the external spiritual energy that was being utilized—the Five Phases within the human body were also being mobilized. By leveraging the generative and restrictive cycles of the Five Phases, Bai Xu stimulated the Wood element, gathering its essence within his liver.
Diving to the bottom of the lake, Bai Xu retrieved the Life Gold buried deep within the Lake of Life. It seemed to have naturally formed there, its surface covered in moss.
What was even more astonishing was its size—an oval-shaped green sphere, nearly 10 meters wide, resembling a weather-worn boulder atop a mountain.
Recalling the small piece of Life Gold that Huo Yuhao had obtained in the past, Bai Xu felt like he had hit the jackpot.
However, he didn't take it away. Instead, he used his Metal-element control to levitate the Life Gold to the surface of the lake, forming a solitary platform. He sat cross-legged atop it, closing his eyes and immersing himself in rigorous cultivation.
---
One Month Later.
"Hmm?"
The approach of a figure roused Bai Xu from his meditative state. Sitting at the center of the Lake of Life, he calmly observed Gu Yue walking toward him and asked, "Here to observe?"
"Mn. Is this dense life energy your doing?" In Gu Yue's perception, Bai Xu's entire body radiated vigorous vitality, its essence concentrated in his liver, resonating with the other three elements.
Moreover, the swirling vortex of emerald-green energy threads around Bai Xu seemed to be the external manifestation of his cultivation.
"Continue. I just want to watch." Gu Yue sat quietly by the lakeside, closing her eyes to cultivate while also extending her divine sense to observe.
Hearing this, Bai Xu closed his eyes again and resumed his training.
Another month passed in the blink of an eye.
By now, traces of Wood-element essence had condensed within Bai Xu's liver. His body was undergoing a rejuvenation—enhancing his physique and even catalyzing the growth of plants. The vegetation around the Lake of Life was growing wildly, some even evolving into spirit beasts and gaining sentience.
They all knelt in reverence, expressing gratitude for the gift of life.
Gu Yue's expression grew increasingly solemn. This was no cultivation method that spirit beasts could comprehend. Just the side effects of Bai Xu's training had boosted the cultivation of Wood-attribute spirit beasts, even granting thousand-year spirit beasts intelligence—and this was just the Wood element alone.
'What does this Wood attribute represent? A leap in life essence accompanied by an increase in lifespan… Does Wood signify longevity? And his body seems to have grown taller? His every movement carries an air of transcendence…'
Gu Yue silently recorded everything she witnessed. Even as half of the Dragon God's incarnation, she was stunned.
The power of creation was a divine ability she could only wield at her peak—bestowing life, revitalizing essence. Yet now, it was appearing in a mere Soul Elder. It made her question whether Bai Xu was truly born from the laws of the world.
Bai Xu awoke, stepping lightly across the water's surface as he returned to the shore and sat across from Gu Yue. The table before them was already laden with various human foods.
Watching Bai Xu leisurely enjoy his meal, Gu Yue couldn't help but ask, "I've carefully studied that half-complete manual on the human body. The Five Phases—Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth—reside within the five organs, but the latter part is missing. What realm could one reach if they cultivated to completion?"
Bai Xu answered intermittently between bites, "The Five Phases within the human body are merely the foundation—or the 'body tempering' stage—laying a solid groundwork for future cultivation. There are higher realms beyond, but it's not convenient to disclose them. As for combat power… let's just say it gives humans like me the confidence to rival dragons. Just compare my strength to Tang Wulin's. I'm nothing more than a human-shaped savage beast."
Gu Yue's lips twitched. The Golden Dragon King was renowned for his strength. If a human could match that…
After a long silence, she sighed. "It's fortunate you're our ally. If we had to face an enemy like you in the future, I'd rather compromise with you."
To peer through past and future was one thing, but to possess such an absurd cultivation method on top of that—how was anyone supposed to compete?
"But… your ability to see through time has its limits, doesn't it? Or perhaps you can only observe a predetermined future?" Gu Yue's tone shifted, catching Bai Xu off guard. In an instant, she had regained the upper hand.
Bai Xu frowned. "What do you mean?"
A faint, coquettish smile played on Gu Yue's lips as she rose and seated herself beside Bai Xu. "If you can truly see through time, then guess what happened this past month—and what will happen next?"
To her surprise, Bai Xu didn't evade the question. Instead, he continued eating nonchalantly and said, "I never claimed to see through past and future. That was the Realm's Will speaking. You all misunderstood."
His expression was so innocent and sincere that Gu Yue, who had been putting on an act, froze mid-motion.
She composed herself and chuckled lightly. "I didn't expect you to admit it so easily. I thought I'd have to resort to more… unconventional methods to test you."
Bai Xu shot her a disdainful look. "We're already allies, and you're still testing me? Undermining trust like this—watch out, or I might just turn on you. But that 'unconventional method' you mentioned, along with that seductive look… Were you planning to charm me?"
Seemingly exposed, Gu Yue snorted to mask her fluster. "Of course not. You're overthinking it."
Bai Xu scoffed. "A true man's ambitions reach higher than the heavens. How could I wallow in the comforts of a gentle embrace? How shallow."
"You really don't like me?"
Gu Yue leaned closer, her breath brushing against Bai Xu's cheek. The proximity allowed him to catch a whiff of her fragrance, and her tender, affectionate demeanor left him dazed for a few seconds.
"I don't," Bai Xu gritted out.
"Heh." Gu Yue laughed lightly, reverting to her usual aloof demeanor. "My apologies. Your supposed ability to see through time put immense pressure on us. If it were real, then the entire world—the schemes of god-kings, the revival of spirit beasts—would all be mere jokes in your eyes. I couldn't fathom such a scenario. So I had to verify your capabilities, to ensure a final safeguard for the spirit beasts. To make up for this breach of trust, I'll compensate you in the future. You're still our ally."
Bai Xu thought for a moment, then said, "Fine. I've already decided on the compensation."
"What is it?" Gu Yue asked, puzzled.
"Let me use the Dragon God Core once."
"The Dragon God Core…" Gu Yue murmured. "Very well."
This exchange wasn't just Gu Yue testing Bai Xu—he, too, was making preparations for the future.
"Bai Xu, I have a question."
"Go ahead."
"The future can be changed, right?"
"Yes."
Gu Yue stood, gazing at the Lake of Life. "Based on what you've said before, I can already imagine the outcome of the future you've seen. But no matter how much I think about it, I can't figure out how you came to this world. If in your past life you remained indifferent to these events, then why warn us in this one?"
Gu Yue was exceedingly sharp. She had long deduced that in the future Bai Xu had seen, she must have fallen in love with Tang Wulin and ultimately compromised with the Divine Realm. The son of the Godking Tang San… and she, half of the Dragon God, reduced to his daughter-in-law. The thought was almost laughable.
Moreover, her child with Tang Wulin would either inherit the Dragon God's power or perish due to the conflict between the Golden and Silver Dragon King bloodlines. With Tang San involved, the outcome was obvious—her child would become the Dragon God.
She herself might have been granted a godhood, stripped of her Silver Dragon bloodline, all for the sake of her child.
The Tang family would have god-kings across generations. What a brilliant scheme.
At this point, Bai Xu also stood, joining her side as they both looked out over the Lake of Life. Activating his martial soul, a surge of primordial yellow energy arose around him. He smiled and said, "The answer is simple: cultivate immortality."
