Landon's question had caught me completely off guard.
Not just the words but the fact that he was even here. At our house. With his luggage and his sister.
She'd told me just last night that she needed time to say goodbye to her old home and I had agreed. It wasn't as if I needed her for anything, or had any reason to keep her close.
But Landon showing up too? That was something else entirely. And the question he asked…
It felt deliberate.
Like he was biding his time, waiting for the perfect moment to let slip the one thing that should have remained buried between us; the secret neither of us should dare to touch.
I switched on the faucet in the visitors' restroom, leaning down until my face hovered over the stream of cold water.
No matter how convincing my act, no matter how composed I tried to appear, I couldn't scrub the memory from my mind. Not even the chaos of last two night or the storm in my thoughts could drown it out.
