Chapter 49 - Fallen Angel

Klen stood amidst the chaos, his body battered and exhausted, yet dozens of shadow tendrils rose behind him like the wings of some dark angel. The arena had fallen into an uneasy silence, the spectators frozen in their seats as they watched the boy who refused to die. Holwas remained calm, almost amused, his hands resting casually behind his back as though he were observing a particularly entertaining performance.

Klen attacked first.

The tendrils shot forward like serpents, aiming to pierce, wrap, and crush. Holwas moved with effortless elegance, stepping between the shadows as though they were nothing more than swaying grass. Each tendril that should have struck him instead carved deep scars into the stone floor. Klen summoned more, his desperation growing with every failed attack. The tendrils multiplied, filling the arena floor with writhing darkness that seemed almost alive.

Holwas continued weaving through them without taking a single hit.

"Impressive," Holwas remarked, sidestepping another tendril. "But predictable."

Klen's breathing became irregular. His movements grew frantic. Froth began to appear around his mouth, and his heartbeat became erratic, pounding against his ribs like a caged animal. He began hissing instead of speaking normally, his eyes wild with desperation.

In a moment of sheer madness, he hurled one of the dead guards' bodies at Holwas. The old man simply stepped aside, watching the corpse sail past him with mild disinterest.

"Desperation does not suit you," Holwas said calmly.

The Shadow's voice echoed urgently in Klen's mind. *"Focus. You're losing control."*

Klen ignored her completely.

Using the tendrils as a distraction, he finally closed the distance between them. His longsword came down in a powerful arc aimed at Holwas's skull. Holwas raised one hand. He caught the blade between his fingers and snapped it in half with a single, effortless motion.

Klen's eyes widened. He stared at the broken hilt in his hands, stunned into momentary stillness.

Holwas didn't waste the opening.

A relentless barrage of punches, kicks, and magic drove Klen backward across the arena. Each blow landed with brutal precision, forcing Klen to defend himself desperately while searching for any opening. The crowd watched in stunned silence, unsure whether to cheer or cower.

Then Klen found his moment. His tendrils coordinated perfectly, wrapping around Holwas's legs and arms simultaneously. Before the old man could react, Klen lunged forward and landed a devastating blow that sent Holwas flying across the arena.

Holwas crashed into the stone wall, dust and debris exploding around him. He quickly recovered, dusting off his clothes with practiced calm.

"Impressive adaptability," Holwas admitted. "You learn quickly."

Klen didn't respond. His mouth foamed as his attacks grew increasingly reckless. He threw his kodachi in a wide arc, and Holwas immediately dodged, believing he understood the trick. What he didn't expect was Klen appearing behind him, having used the thrown weapon as a distraction.

A brutal combination of punches and kicks followed. Klen's fists and feet struck with inhuman force, each blow driving Holwas further back. Tendrils wrapped around the old man's limbs, and Klen attempted to impale him with a shadowy spear. Holwas's eyes widened for the first time. His magic flared, destroying the tendrils and narrowly avoiding the killing blow.

Deciding the fight had gone on long enough, Holwas raised his hand. Invisible force immobilized Klen completely. He picked up Klen's own kodachi from the ground, walked over slowly, and drove the blade through Klen's chest.

Klen's body went limp. He collapsed onto the arena floor, blood pooling beneath him.

Holwas stood over him, his expression almost regretful. "You would have made an excellent champion," he remarked quietly.

Believing Klen dead, Holwas turned and began walking away.

"Wait."

The voice was weak, barely above a whisper. Holwas paused. He turned around slowly. Klen was pushing himself upright, his body trembling violently as he forced himself to stand. His grey eyes had become bloodshot, his pupils dilating and narrowing erratically.

His heartbeat stopped.

And something had activated.

Holwas's calm expression flickered for the first time. Not with fear—with fascination. "Remarkable," he breathed.

Klen attacked with monstrous speed. Before Holwas could react, he was tackled into the wall with enough force to crack the stone. Klen's fighting style had completely changed. He no longer fought like a swordsman. He hissed and clawed like a cornered beast, attacking without any concern for his own injuries. Each strike was driven by pure, feral instinct.

Holwas was forced to defend himself seriously for the first time. His graceful dodges became narrower, his counters more desperate. Gradually, however, he adapted. His movements regained their precision, and he began to reassert control over the fight.

Finally, he caught Klen by the throat.

Klen thrashed wildly, his mind too far gone to think rationally. Holwas tightened his grip and calmly snapped Klen's neck.

Klen's body collapsed for the second time.

Inside Klen's mind, darkness stretched endlessly in every direction. He stood in a void of shadow and silence, gravely wounded, his body broken and his spirit exhausted. She approached him quietly, her steps making no sound against the nothingness beneath her feet.

She knelt beside him, her crimson eyes soft and gentle. "May I?" she asked simply.

Klen looked at her. Years of nightmares. Years of whispers. Years of manipulation, torture, and suffering. She had been with him through all of it, watching, waiting, protecting in her own twisted way.

He was tired.

So tired.

"Take over," he whispered. "I'm tired."

The Shadow smiled gently. She embraced him possessively, pulling his broken body against her chest. "Sleep," she murmured softly. "I'll protect you."

Klen lost consciousness.

Outside, shadow tendrils enveloped Klen's body. They didn't heal his wounds—they reconstructed the vessel entirely. The blade was pushed from his chest. His broken neck was restored. The wounds across his body vanished as though they had never existed. The tendrils dissolved, revealing a body that looked whole and untouched.

Klen's eyes opened.

They were crimson.

He rose slowly, his posture completely different from before. Every movement was elegant and graceful, deliberate and controlled. He brushed imaginary dust from his sleeve, his fingers trailing over the fabric as though the motion itself was a form of art. A sword formed from living shadow in his hand, and he ran a finger across its edge, testing its sharpness with a detached curiosity.

Then he struck an elegant, feminine stance that Klen himself would never have used. His hand curled toward Holwas, a single finger beckoning the old man to continue.

Holwas froze.

His calm expression shattered. His face went pale, and for the first time in his long life, genuine terror flickered in his eyes. He fell slowly to one knee, his voice barely a whisper.

"Dark Angel..."

He recognized the true being controlling Klen's body—the very entity he had worshipped for decades.

His voice trembled as he began praising her, his words tumbling out in a desperate rush. "Everything I did was in devotion to you! Every champion, every sacrifice, every drop of blood spilled in this arena—it was all for you!"

The Shadow listened patiently. Then she spoke, her voice echoing with authority that silenced the entire arena. "I witnessed everything."

She paused.

"I despised every moment of it."

Holwas's face crumbled. The Shadow continued, her tone cold and unwavering. "You mistook obsession for devotion. You mistook cruelty for faith." She looked down at Klen's body, her expression softening slightly. "You laid your filthy hands upon what is mine."

She allowed Holwas to witness her true appearance—just for an instant. For a single, terrifying moment, the old man saw what she truly was beneath the vessel she inhabited. The illusion lasted only a heartbeat before she once again became Klen, standing calm and composed before him.

Holwas was overwhelmed with terror. "Forgive me," he begged, his voice cracking. "Please, I didn't know—"

The Shadow silently passed judgment.

No one in the arena perceived the attack. There was no flash of steel, no burst of magic—only Holwas's body collapsing to the ground, a single, perfect cut across his throat. His eyes remained open, frozen in terror.

The arena fell silent.

Holwas was dead.

Everyone present realized something far more terrifying than Klen had entered the battlefield. The Shadow quietly looked over the arena, her crimson eyes sweeping across the terrified spectators.

Then she whispered softly, her voice carrying the warmth of a lullaby:

"Sleep. I'll watch over you."
