Isla POV
I kept feeling restless while I pace around my wide room, thinking to myself.
Why should I believe a man I just met a few weeks back over my sister who I have known since forever.
I believe Dante is probably taunting me, trying to get hold of me through my emotions using my only weakness against me. He knew I would do anything and everything for my sister. Celeste might be reckless, but never can she do such to me, we are both the only family left for each other.
And I live for her, she has been my responsibility ever since I could remember and I will go through any length to protect my little sister from these demons.
My stomach turned into a notch for even considering her a betrayer, I know how great our bond is and to think of her like that made me feel bad.
I knew the solution to these unwanted doubts is proving my little sister's innocence.
I realized how much have missed her, our little fight and non-stop chatter, not knowing the state she's put me in, it made me get close to tears which I blinked back almost immediately.
I have to be strong for her and I prayed silently that Lucas haven't gotten to her.
Ever since my last conversation with Dante, I have been looking for information about my perpetrator which has been proving abortive.
I sneaked into the enforcer's room last night, he seems to be my only link to Lucas here but everything have been wiped clean leaving me with a feeling of emptiness.
With each passing seconds, the feeling of uncertainty kept swimming in, it makes me more curious for survival.
I moved on to sitting on the sofa in my room, planning my next move. I have done a mental survey of the mansion and decided my next location should be Dante's study which seems impossible as he spends most of his daytime in it.
Feeling confused and frustrated for a moment, I started articulating my plan to infiltrate his study in my mind.
"The best time to go will be this night" I thought to myself.
My day ended in a blur as I couldn't get my mind off my plans for the night which sends my heart racing. I waited patiently as I heard his door which was at the other side of the hall closing few minutes to midnight.
I picked up a torch and crept slowly out of my room, careful not to alert anyone. I rushed down the hall after successfully passing through without alarming anyone. And within a few minutes I reached the corridor leading to the study.
I know getting the door open will not be hard for me, a skill I have mastered from constant moving with Celeste during the early days after our parent's death.
I reached the door, ready to go put my skills to work but to my surprise, the door was left unlocked.
A feeling of suspicion washed over me but I pushed the feeling at the back of my mind and went on ahead with my plans.
"It was now or never" I thought as I walked in cautiousless. As I stepped into the room, I was slapped back by the scent of strong masculine vibe it gave off. The whole room was neatly painted and decorated in black and white, it was set with three arms chairs and a wide table that separated two of the chairs from the other bigger one obviously belonging to the one in command.
I then noticed a white L-shaped leather couch at the corner of the room. The furniture was beautifully crafted and it was quite obvious it must have costed a fortune.
A tall shelf held tons of book and files which I find surprising because never did I picture Dante as the type to read books.
The room felt stiff as it owner. Dante's smell lingered in the room and I involuntarily took in the familiar scent, lost briefly at the moment.
I quickly dragged myself back to reality and my mission in the room.
I was confused about where to begin my search, I instantly started ransacking the shelf checking for anything that might look familiar.
After more than twenty minutes of search and getting nothing I jerked my head and moved towards the piles of files laying neatly on his desk.
I felt the files must have been for the current deals he had on, but curiosity made me check.
Alas, I finally found a file, that boldly was written on it is "Celeste alias". I frowned as the thought of what Dante had said rushed back into my mind. I wonder why Dante will own a file on my sister and what was it doing on his table.
I opened the file that felt light to my touch and the first thing I saw was a transaction receipt. It contains my name and a hefty sum of money was boldly written there, my eyes dragged to the bottom of the paper noticing Celeste's signature and Lucas's.
I gave an outward gasp because Celeste's signature couldn't have been forged, she had a funny signature growing up and it was very hard to imitate.
My heart dropped to my stomach, as tears start pouring out of my eyes uncontrollably.
Celeste's betrayal hit me like a knife piercing through my heart.
I remember the days when I worked more than three jobs just to put food on the table and make sure she is comfortable.
I left my education and pursue hers. I just couldn't understand what her reasons was?
I was still sobbing when I heard the door open. I turned back and see it was Dante. I know I overstepped, touching his personal stuffs. I can't imagine how much anger he would be held inside at the moment.
Surprisingly, he walked casually towards me and quietly snatched the file out of my hand without sparing me a look before I raised my head to defend myself but his expression remaining impassive.
It was then I realized he knew I would search his study, he left the file there for me to find.
I felt so stupid and humiliated. His silence made it worsen, his silence felt as if I am being judged and I couldn't bare it any more.
I ran out of the room shattered and embarrassed, as I kept running, only one word stuck In my head.
WHY??
