Mrs Florence cleared her throat. Ahem!, she said in an important air. I will not expel her from this club instead I will give her another chance, she added and most of the club members grumbled.
Thank you, Mrs Florence, I will not disappoint you next time, Savannah said smiling.
Good, now let's continue, Mrs Florence said strictly.
The bell for the closing hour rang and students started to leave the school. Savannah and Ryan were walking towards the school's gate when Savannah sighted Maya among the crowds.
Hey, Maya!, Savannah called out and Maya looked back and saw that it was Savannah who called her name. Maya turned towards them and stood still with a mocking smirk on her face as Savannah and Ryan walked towards her. When Savannah and Ryan were a few inches from her they stopped in their tracks.
I hate that smirk but anyways, what the hell did you tell the club members that make them see me as an incapable freak?, Savannah asked trying to hide her anger.
Maya made a sniffy smile. I didn't tell anyone about you, it's just that your attitude towards learning anything is bad, Maya said looking straight into Savannah's eye. Maya moved closer to Savannah and adjusted Savannah's hair.
You know...,she paused and smiled. I love your friendship with Ryan. It is the most beautiful combo I've ever seen, two dullards that are also best friends, what an awesome sight, Maya said and Savannah raised her right hand to slap Maya as she grounds her molars and fire literally burning in her eyes but she withdrew her right hand.
Savannah sighed and bent over to Macy's right ear and whispered some words 'I'm sure you know since you were once my closest friend that I, Savannah Will, don't give up easily until I get what I want, she said to Maya in hushed tones and stood straight.
You're just bluffing, Maya said as she remained unswayed.
Oh, you think I am, then watch me take over, Savannah said in a serious tone as her clear gaze turned cold then she walked past Maya and hit her shoulder against Maya's deliberately. Maya turned and watched them leave. She glanced at them intensely, do you think it is that easy to become a straight A's student?, she said and continued walking towards the school's gate.
Ryan and Savannah got to the bus stop. Ryan, can you please start reading your books and I will continue to do the same too so that they will stop calling us dullards?, Savannah asked Ryan who was looking at her trying to hold his laughter.
Uh, can you do that?, Savannah asked and Ryan let out his laughter.
You must be kidding me, you think I will read?, Ryan asked because he knows how unserious he is when it comes to studying as he was trying not to laugh out more.
I know that you want to be a basketball player and you care less about academics but I hate the fact that Maya called you a dullard, Savannah said trying to convince Ryan.
I've heard all sorts of names so I'm okay with that, Ryan said.
I know, I've heard that feeling too that I don't care about being called a dullard but now I feel like we need to show those mockers that we came from a family where all the members are geniuses and we were also born as geniuses, Savannah said with an enthusiastic voice.
The bus arrived and the people that were also waiting at the bus stop started to go in.
I'll think about it, let's go in first, Ryan said and was about to enter the bus when he noticed Savannah wasn't following him.
You go first, I have to go to the bookstore, Savannah said and waved him goodbye. Ryan entered the bus alone while Savannah walked to the bookstore nearby.
In the middle of the night, Ryan jolted awake to absolute silence and he looked at the wall clock in his room. It's 12:30 AM and I actually woke up without the help of an alarm, i guess God wants me to read, Ryan said without zeal and stood up from his bed. He drank water, brought out a chemistry textbook for grade 10 and he sat down on his chair and placed the textbook in front of him. He opened the textbook and as soon as he started reading he began to jot down words in his notebook.
In Mr and Mrs Will's house, Savannah who had been reading for the past two hours closed her poetry textbook and went to bed. Savannah who already closed her eyes and was ready to sleep opened her eyes and sat up on her bed.
Will 2 hours of reading be enough for me to be a top student?, Savannah thought to herself. I don't think it's enough, I should continue reading, Savannah said and stood up from her bed. She walked to her study chair and sat down.
Okay, I have memorized 20 poets and I have also memorized some poems so I'll read another subject, she said to herself as her eyes was scanning the pile of textbooks in front of her. I'll take this, Savannah said as she took the physics textbook from amongst the pile of textbooks, she opened to a topic and started reading the topic.
In the morning, Savannah and Ryan came together to school before any lesson period could start. Some students were already in class chatting amongst themselves then Savannah and Ryan walked in like weary souls. They sat on their seats and immediately laid their head on their desk and they fell asleep. Few minutes later, the bell for the first lesson period rang and their Geography teacher, Mrs Flemming came in and saw Ryan and Savannah sleeping but she ignored them and continued teaching the class. In the middle of the lesson, Mrs Flemming realized that Savannah and Ryan were still sleeping.
Okay, I'm tired of this, Freddy and Thomas wake Ryan and Savannah up right now!, Mrs Flemming commanded and they did as she said. Ryan and Savannah woke up and with a shocked look on their faces they realized a teacher had already come into the class when they were asleep.
Why were you guys sleeping in my class?, Mrs Flemming asked angrily. We...um...we didn't mean..., they both stuttered as they were trying to find an excuse when Mrs Flemming cut them off.
I don't need to hear any of your excuses, now, Savannah stand up, Mrs Flemming said.
Why me?, Savannah asked herself as she squeezed her face and reluctantly stood up.
We've been discussing about International Date Line, Greenwich Mean Time, Standard Time and World Time Zones, Mrs Flemming said and looked at Savannah.
I think I've heard this topic before, Savannah thought to herself. That's it!, she exclaimed in her thoughts. Mrs Enzo had taught me before saying it was her favorite sub- topic under the topic Longitude and Latitude, Savannah thought and this boosted her confidence.
Can you differentiate between Standard Time and Local Time?, Mrs Flemming asked and Savannah slightly coughed.
Well, Standard Time is the time generally adopted by a country. It is usually taken from the central meridian of that country while Local Time is the situation in which time varies for every degree of longitude and this means that as soon longitude changes, time changes as well, Savannah said and smiled.
That's correct, give her a round of applause everyone!, Mrs Flemming said aloud and everyone clapped and Maya who was waiting for her answer earlier looked away because she was disappointed that Savannah gave the right answer to the question. Seems like someone has been reading, well, sit down Savannah, she said and Savannah sat down then Mrs Flemming looked at Ryan.
It's your turn, Ryan, this question is somehow simple but also hard, Mrs Flemming said. Ryan stood up, I just started reading and I haven't read anything about Geography, Ryan thought inside of him.
To convert the longitude difference to time, what will 15 degrees be if it were to be converted to time?, Mrs Flemmings said and Ryan looked down thinking of the answer then he remembered that day he came home and saw Mrs Enzo teaching Savannah.
That day, Ryan walked up to his mum. I'm back, mum, he said and gave Savannah a high five. I'm done doing the dishes, Ryan said. Well done, I finally got you to do the dishes willingly, Mrs Enzo said with a faint smile and Ryan smiled and turned to leave but Savannah stopped him.
Ryan, do you know that the longitude difference for 15 degrees equals to 1 hour, 1 degree equals to 4 minutes and 360 degrees equals to 24 hours?, Savannah said showing off what she learnt.
Whatever, Ryan said and left.
Ryan came back to reality and smiled. Lucky me, I guess, Ryan said to himself and looked up. 15 degrees equals to 24 hours, Ryan said and the Geography teacher was amazed.
I like the improvement, jam your hands together for him, Mrs Flemming said and the students clapped.
I like my memory, Ryan said to Savannah and Savannah smiled. Don't you like that feeling you have when people clap for you because you got a question right?, Savannah asked and Ryan nodded. I definitely like it, Ryan said grinning from ear to ear.
If you like it, let's be straight A's students together, she said and they fist bumped each other. Let's do our friendship handshake, Savannah said. No, it's cringy, Ryan said and Savannah frowned and her expression made Ryan chuckle.
Okay, let's continue with our class, Mrs Flemming said.
Ryan and Savannah continued reading and gave the right answers to questions though sometimes they got some wrong and as days went by teachers started to see them as good students.
In the clubroom, some weeks after, all the members were gathered.
I have an announcement to make, Mrs Florence said. There is going to be a small poetry competition next month for different schools and since it's just a small event, Savannah will be representing the school at that competition, Mrs Florence said and Savannah opened her eyes wide in surprise.
