Chapter 8 - A Friend, Tons Of Foes

At school the next day, during the maths class. Savannah, tell us the answer to this equation, Mr Kennedy said looking at Savannah without batting an eye.

Savannah bent her head trying to work out the equation. She remembered she had already seen the solution to that kind of equation. As Savannah kept on solving the equation, Mr Kennedy sighed.

Why did I bother asking you?, Mr Kennedy said and faced Sheldon. Sheldon, tell us the answer, he said and Ryan made a furrow in because Mr Kennedy was impatient.

Savannah dropped her pen and looked at Ryan then gulped down her saliva as she was nervous to say the answer but Ryan coaxed her by patting her shoulder.

The answer is..., Sheldon was saying but Savannah interrupted him. Seven, Savannah said aloud enough for everyone to hear and everyone turned to look at her. The answer is seven, she said but this time more confident as she stared at Maya who scoffed and looked away.

Wow, that's correct but are you sure you didn't just guess the answer?, Mr Kennedy threw her a question that made everyone change their surprised look to a doubtful look.

Savannah was thrilled and a little offended at the disbelief on everyone's faces. Well, sir, I did not guess the answer, I solved it myself, Savannah said without mincing words.

Okay, come to the board and show us how you arrived at your answer, Mr Kennedy said.

She hesitated at first then she boldly stood up. Okay, Sir, I'll show you how I solved it, Savannah said and walked up to the board. She picked up the marker and scribbled the solution on the board. Few minutes later, she was done and got Mr Kennedy and everyone surprised.

Mr Kennedy looked at the students. Well, what are you waiting for?,give her a round of applause!, Mr Kennedy exclaimed with a wide smile and the students clapped including Maya who clapped reluctantly.

Savannah walked to her seat to sit beside Ryan whose hand was in the hair waiting to high five Savannah. Savannah sat down and gave Ryan a high five, they bumped their fist together, they tilted each other's chin up at the same time that is, Savannah tilted Ryan's chin up and Ryan tilted Savannah's chin up at the same time then they pushed each other's chin away and folded their arms with a frown on their faces then they giggled.

When they were done with their friendship handshake, they faced the teacher while some of the students talked amidst themselves.

Okay, that's enough, let's continue with the class, Mr Kennedy said and continued teaching the class.

In the afternoon, during the break, Savannah sat on one of the bleachers watching the school's soccer team practice. Suddenly, bam, the ball hit her smack in the face. Savannah could not cry neither could she smile, she held her face and all they could say was a damn cold 'sorry'.

Is that how to apologize?!, Ryan who had seen the ball hit Savannah and heard the insincere apology from the players said in an angry tone as he gritted his teeth, his face ashen showing how furious he was.

Immediately the players saw who he was, they became disorganized.

Bring her an ice pack!, Nathaniel the soccer captain said. I am so sorry that the ball hit you in the face, I didn't mean to, Dan the boy who kicked the ball straight to Savannah's face said to Savannah nervously.

Savannah was shocked by the sudden change in the school's soccer team's character.

Take this icebag, it will help to depress the pain, Ashley, a girl said as she trembled and Savannah collected the ice pack and placed it on her face. Then they all stood in a single file directly facing Savannah and

bowed.

We are really sorry!, they said in unison with their head still bowed and Ryan smiled. That's enough, Ryan said and they scattered across the field and continued practicing.

Wow, is this a movie!?, Savannah exclaimed in amazement. I'm the boss here so they do what I want, Ryan said and winked at Savannah. Ryan collected the ice pack from Savannah and gently placed it on her face.

Ryan, Savannah called out in a tiny cute voice and Ryan looked at her visibly cringing. I want lollipop, Savannah said as she blinked multiple times.

And where should I get that?, Ryan asked. I saw some in your backpack when you were sleeping during literature class, Savannah said as she pouts.

Those are mine, you see, I love lollipops, Ryan said as he stopped putting the ice pack on Savannah's face.

Please!, she said in a more annoyingly cute voice desperately clasping Ryan's hands. Okay, let's go to the class, I'll give you there, he said and they stood up.

Savannah followed him and they walked to the class side by side, Savannah looked at Ryan with a questioned look on her face.

How come this school's soccer team fear you that they had to perform an unrealistic drama in front of me just because you told them to apologize to me better?, Savannah asked as she kept on walking.

That's because I broke their huge and strong former Captain's leg, Ryan said in a straightforward manner.

Why would you do that?!, Savannah exclaimed as she halted abruptly pitying the formal captain.

Ryan stopped and looked at her. He called me a dullard, a bastard, son of a bitch and he also said my mother was a pitiful wench for giving birth to a brainless son like me, Ryan said in a calm and cool tone with his hands in his pockets.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know he said that, Savannah said in a sincere tone and kept on walking. That guy had no manners at all and he totally deserved it for making fun of your mom but if I were you I would have broken his cheekbones, took away five of his teeth, make a mark on his lips with a sharp blade and scar him for life, she said with a serious look on her face and her words made Ryan chuckle.

Wow, you're really ruthless, Ryan said sarcastically.

Thanks for the fake compliment, Savannah said in a tone which had a mixture of confidence and pride as she adjusted her blouse and they both laughed at Savannah's behavior.

If anyone sees you now, they'll think that you're someone they should be scared of but they won't know that you twisted your ankle because of a fake beast in a stupid prank, Ryan said jokingly with a warm smile on his face.

Shhh, don't let anyone hear about this or else I will..., she was saying when someone called her name.

Savannah!, Thomas one of the members of the school's poetry club and also the student that sits in front of Savannah in class called out her name which made Ryan and Savannah look back.

Mrs Florence wants all of us in the clubroom now, Thomas said in a hurry and a glare that clearly says "I can't believe I have to call someone like because you're now one of us" and he left.

Savannah looked at Ryan, I guess I gotta leave now but keep my lollipop well because I don't wanna hear stories that touches the heart, Savannah said, threatening Ryan and ran off.

What does she mean by stories that touches she heart?, Ryan asked himself as he was confused.

In the club room, they were all seated, all ten in number namely;, Maya a 10th grader, Carlotta a 9th grader, Thomas a 10th grader, Dawn a 11th grader, Henry a 9th grader, April a 8th grader, James a 11th grader, Lacy 9th grader, Bryan a 9th grader and Orton a 8th grader and they are all waiting for their eleventh member who is also their last member, Savannah. Savannah got into the clubroom and they all frowned at her.

I'm sorry everyone for coming late but I came immediately Thomas came to call me, Savannah said in an apologetic tone.

Okay but next time don't wait for you to be called before you come, Mrs Florence said and Savannah nodded and went to sit at her normal seat which was beside Carlotta.

Savannah, can you tell me ten poets?, Mrs Florence asked and Savannah bit her underlip.

Damn it, I only know two poets, I should have done a lot of research on poets, she thought in a regretful tone.

Savannah!, Mrs Florence shouted her name since Savannah was not responding and Savannah looked at Mrs Florence while others waited for her answer.

I...I only know two poets, Savannah hesitatedly said and they mocked her, laughing in exasperation.

Ma'am, can't you just expel her from this club?, she doesn't even know five poets and she wants to be a poet, Henry said criticising her.

That's true and I'm pretty sure the only poems she has ever read are the poems you tell us to read whenever you teach us in class, Thomas said and they all mocked her again.

Savannah looked at everyone's mocking face then Maya smiled smugly at her.

I mean, her brain is too small to take in names of poets not to talk of poems. If she remains here she will continue to think that one day she will go to competitions with us despite being way out of her league when it comes to poetry and academics, Lacy said in a witty tone.

She is not capable of being in this club, Mrs Florence, Carlotta said while eyeing Savannah.

That's enough!, Mrs Florence commanded and there was silence.

Wow, I'm in the midst of damn foes, Savannah said to herself as reality punched her hard in the face.
