Chapter 15 - Faces in the Mirrors

"**

Adam walked alone among the ruins of a shattered city in Nimora, while the fog seeped between the buildings, whispering secrets that should not be spoken. His steps were growing heavier, not from fatigue, but from the weight of the old messages he had found hours ago, behind the secret wall in his grandmother's cellar.

They were written in her handwriting… but the signature was not her real name.

*"To my heir… not my grandson."*

He read it over and over again. The sentence was short, but it pierced him like an arrow. *"Heir?"* He repeated the word as if it were foreign to him.

Laboubo, the creature that accompanied him, was quieter than usual. He no longer teased him as he did before, nor did he comment on the letters. It was as if even he... knew.

In another letter, it was written:

*"Since I saved him from the gate of time, I knew he was not from this world. But he is the only one capable of carrying the covenant, and continuing the guardianship."*

The letter didn't mention a name, but Adam's heart raced.

*Was she talking about him? Did she save him when he was a child? From where? And why couldn't he remember anything about his past before the age of seven?*

He held a small mirror that was inside the box where he had found the letters. When he looked at his reflection… he didn't just see himself.

Behind him, there was a shadow of a woman. With long white hair and eyes without shine, staring at him from behind. He wasn't scared… but confused.

He turned quickly… no one. But when he looked back into the mirror, she appeared again, and this time… she smiled.

*"It's Grandma..."* he whispered, but he wasn't sure. There was something else in her face... something not quite human.

\*\*

That night, while taking shelter in an abandoned building, Laboubo finally spoke.

*"Adam… you are not what you think. And Grandma? She wasn't what you thought either. The world you call your reality... is just a thin layer of the truth."*

*"What do you mean?"* Adam asked, his voice hoarse.

Laboubo hesitated, then said:

*"She didn't give birth to you. But she saved you... from the other side."*

*"What other side?!"*

*"The one inhabited by the entities you now call monsters. You were one of them... but you were born from light, not darkness. That's why… she chose you."*

\*\*

Adam's eyes widened. He didn't feel fear… but confusion and awe. How could he be something that was not human? Was this what explained everything he had felt since entering Nimora? The growing power inside him? His extraordinary resilience? His strange connection to the place?

At that moment, the wall in front of him began to glow, and a symbol appeared that hadn't been there before: *"Adam… the guardian who does not know his origin."*

That night marked the true beginning of his transformation… and the start of the collapse of his old identity.
