Chapter 32 - Zeke's Encounter

In the magical forest settled an eerie stillness that seemed to press against Zeke's chest with invisible weight. Each breath he took was sharp and cold, mixing with the damp scent of moss and decayed leaves that carpeted the ground. Their boots barely made a sound, but the oppressive silence was heavy, like the trees themselves were holding their breath. He led his squad cautiously through the underbrush, the glow from his mana blade casting flickering shadows on the twisted trunks and tangled roots.

Darius moved a few paces behind, eyes scanning the gloom with tense alertness. The younger boy's face was pale, lips pressed tight, but his hands gripped his blade with fierce determination. The squad knew what was ahead, this was Hollowed territory, and the signs were everywhere. The trees bent in unnatural angles, the air colder than it should be, and a creeping fog curled low to the ground like slithering smoke.

Suddenly, a low, guttural growl echoed through the trees, breaking the silence. From the dense shadows sprang a pack of Wretches, wiry creatures with jagged claws and eyes like dying embers. Their snarls were sharp and sudden, teeth bared in a vicious grin as they lunged toward the squad in a swirling mass.

"Shields up!" Zeke barked, raising his staff. Barriers of shimmering mana bloomed around them, radiating in a soft blue pulse as it absorbed the initial onslaught.

The first Wretch smashed against the shield, claws scrabbling at the invisible wall. Its mouth snapped inches from Darius's face, teeth grinding on the shimmering barrier. Darius lashed out with his blade, catching the creature across its chest. It let out a harsh screech and collapsed to the ground, twitching violently.

"Keep moving!" Zeke urged, spinning his staff in a wide arc. The blade ignited with radiant light that cleaved through the darkness, striking a Wretch as it lunged for his side. The beast shrieked and dissolved into a dark mist, the faintest hint of sorrow lingering in its vanishing.

But more Wretches surged forward. They were relentless - a living tide of shadow and malice, darting between trees, snapping, biting, and clawing with sharp precision. The forest around them seemed to warp with their presence, the branches bending like skeletal hands reaching in to snatch the intruders.

Zeke's breath came in short, ragged bursts. His muscles ached from the constant motion - parrying, striking, ducking. His staff hummed with raw energy, a steady source of light and power in the consuming gloom.

"Darius, watch your left!" Zeke shouted as a clawed hand swiped toward his comrade's neck.

Darius twisted just in time, his blade slicing through the air to catch the attacker's attacker. The Wretch hissed in pain, retreating a step, only to be replaced immediately by another. The creatures moved in packs, covering each other's attacks, hunting like wolves.

Chi!chi!chi!

From the depths of the forest, a massive shadow emerged.

It was unlike anything Zeke had ever seen. Towering and lithe, its form flickered like smoke caught in a faint breeze. Its eyes glowed with a cold, pale light that burned through the darkness, ancient and merciless. Tendrils of shadow coiled and writhed around it, flowing like liquid.

The temperature plummeted instantly. The air thickened, turning icy and suffocating. Zeke felt a chill spread through his bones - a cold that was not just physical but spiritual, as if the very essence of the forest had turned hostile.

"You dare trespass," the Wraith's voice was a whisper, yet it echoed with terrible power. "Your light will be extinguished."

Zeke squared his shoulders, tightening his grip on his sword. "We wont to run," he replied, voice steady despite the knot of fear twisting in his gut.

Darius's eyes narrowed, breath steaming in the cold air. "Can we deal with the Wretches first," he growled, slashing at a snarling beast that lunged too close.

The Wraith drifted forward, its shadowy tendrils flicking through the air like whip cracks. It moved with unnatural grace, twisting around the trees and seeming to dissolve and re-form with impossible speed. With a sudden burst, one tendril lashed out and smashed into their mana shield.

The barrier shattered with a harsh crack, sparks flying as the force tore through. The mage who set the barrier staggered, coughing up blood, Zeke who was caught within the range of the attack staggered, a sharp pain flaring across his chest where the shockwave hit.

"Brace!" he yelled, planting his staff firmly. Gathering all his will, he summoned a pulse of radiant mana that surged out in a wave, pushing back the small tide of Wretches that had surged closer to the group.

But the creatures were relentless. The Wretches circled again, teeth snapping and claws raking, while the Wraith loomed, its tendrils weaving an inescapable web of shadow.

Darius slashed frantically, cutting down a few wretches that seemingly appeared from nowhere one after another, but more emerged from the darkness. Their numbers seemed endless, each attack pushing the squad closer to the edge.

Zeke gritted his teeth, feeling the sting of exhaustion prickling beneath his skin. Every breath was a struggle; his arms ached, and sweat dripped cold down his forehead despite the chill.

A tendril whipped out, catching Darius's shoulder with a searing crack. The boy stumbled, blood blossoming through his armor. "I'm fine!" he snapped, gritting his teeth as he fought to stay upright.

But the Wraith's next move was devastating. It raised both shadowy arms, and the ground beneath them trembled violently. Roots and vines burst from the earth like serpents, coiling around Zeke's legs, trying to pull him down into the dark soil.

Zeke kicked fiercely, wrenching himself free with desperate strength. His vision blurred as the shadows tightened, cold and suffocating. He raised his sword and swung hard, slicing through the grasping roots with a brilliant slash of light.

"Focus!" he yelled to Darius and his group, who was now backed against a tree, fighting off two Wretches that circled hungrily.

"We can't keep this up much longer!" Darius gasped, swinging wildly.

Zeke scanned the battlefield, searching for any advantage. The Wraith was the center of the storm, the source of the unnatural darkness. It moved like a living shadow, impossible to pin down, its tendrils lashing out with deadly precision. And even then it was merely playing with them.

He knew they couldn't win alone.

Summoning every ounce of mana he had left, Zeke prepared a powerful strike. His sword glowed fiercely, radiating light that pushed back the creeping dark. With a shout, he charged the Wraith, swinging his blade in a wide arc.

The Wraith twisted away effortlessly, its tendrils snapping out to catch him mid-swing. A cold whip cracked across Zeke's ribs, sending him crashing to the ground, breath wheezing out in a harsh rasp.

Darius cried out, charging to his side, blocking a lethal blow with his own blade. "Get up! Everyone Help! We can't lose Zeke here!"

Zeke coughed, spitting out blood. His head swam with pain and exhaustion, but he forced himself upright. "We need to hold... buy time..." His voice was barely audible over the chaos.

The Wretches closed in again, claws and teeth flashing in the dim light. Zeke swung his Sword desperately, cutting through them as best he could, but the numbers overwhelmed.

A Stalker slipped from the shadows, silent and ghostlike. Its eyes glimmered with eerie green light as it circled, searching for an opening. Zeke met its gaze, heart pounding.

"Not today," he whispered.

He lunged forward, Staff aimed, but the Stalker vanished like smoke, reappearing behind him. Its claws raked his back, cold and sharp. Zeke cried out, falling forward onto the mossy ground.

Drip! Drip! Drip!

The sound of his own blood dripping down his body sent a wave of helplessness over him, the plan was to fight the wraith together with Tala and Ella's group, how unlucky were they to run into this beast alone.

Darius was beside him instantly, swinging wildly, shouting curses as he fought off the swarm.

The Wraith hovered, watching with a cruel smile. Its shadow tendrils twined through the trees, draining the life and hope from the clearing.

Zeke struggled to rise, vision dimming. He felt the mana in his veins ebbing away, his strength bleeding with every strike.

"We hold," Darius said fiercely, eyes blazing as he watched his leader's battered form struggling to stand. "Even if we fall, we make them pay."

Zeke nodded weakly. The fight was far from over and victory was still a distant dream. But as long as they could stand, as long as their light endured, there was hope.
