Chapter 35 - Tala's Encounter II

...

Above the forest hiddent in the clouds the professors sat on the edge of their seats anticipating the upcoming battle.

"She won't last two minutes, Headmaster." A professor said, his voice was a dismissive rasp, barely a murmur. He leaned over the handles of his seat looking towards the observation screen, a condescending sneer on his lips as a red marker representing Tala's squad flickered by the corrupted river. "That little girl's group isn't nearly as strong as Zeke's. You should pull those monsters away, it would be a waste to kill her off now."

The headmaster, a figure of imposing stillness, merely chuckled. The sound was enchanting, as if nature was given a voice yet devoid of warmth. His gaze remained fixed on the swirling energy signatures of the trial. "A waste, Thorne? On the contrary. They are trying to play with us, dear Professor." His eyes, cold and ancient, flickered to the monitor displaying Tala's feed. "And I am merely making things a little... interesting."

A beat of silence hung in the air, broken only by the rhythmic thrum of the Academy's hidden mechanisms that allow them to simulate the Wildlands.

"And besides," the Headmaster continued, a chilling note entering his voice, "that little girl is Zeke's friend. If she is too weak, she should die now so she doesn't hold him back in the future." His words were a pronouncement, absolute and unyielding, carrying the weight of a decree. Professor Thorne said nothing more, merely returning to his data analysis, a faint, unsettling smile playing on his lips.

...

On the swampy ground below, the chilling laughter-growl reverberated, echoing through the sodden trees. For a long, agonizing second, no one moved. The only sound was the gurgle of the river, a sinister backdrop to the sudden, profound silence that had fallen between the two wary groups of students. Aaron's eyes met Tala's, a fleeting moment of shared terror, then a mutual, unspoken agreement. They both turned as one towards the source of the sound.

In the distance, an unnatural fog billowed from the heart of the forest, swiftly rolling towards them like a ghostly tide. Through its shifting, opaque veil, indistinct shadows danced, the erratic, snarling forms of Wretches, a growing horde surging forward. But above them, further back, something else drifted with terrifying stillness, a form more substantial than the fog, yet ethereally out of reach.

Tala's breath caught. The color drained from her face, leaving her complexion ashen. Her mind, usually a fortress of logical deduction, reeled as a long-buried memory surfaced, a nightmare of ash and screams, of a city brought to its knees. The beast that had ruined her home, that had haunted her sleep for years, was hovering there, its form unmistakable.

"A Wraith," she whispered, the single word cutting through the heavy air like a shard of ice. Though barely audible, it was heard by everyone in her squad, their faces paling, some beginning to tremble. The very name carried a weight of terror that settled over them.

Aaron and his group, unaware of what a Wraith was beyond the immediate terror it inspired, exchanged panicked glances. They hadn't been privy to Tala's earlier explanations of Hollowed hierarchy; their knowledge was born of brute survival, not scholarly study. Still, the visceral dread that emanated from Tala's squad, combined with the ominous pressure emnating from the being, told them this was nothing good.

Aaron, tried to play off the mounting anxiety. He straightened, gripping his axe tighter. "Hmph. Temporary truce until we kill this beast." His voice was gruff, an attempt to project confidence despite the tremor that ran through his hand.

Tala managed a wry, mirthless smile, still pale, and nodded. "Agreed."

Her squad was already organized, their formation tight and disciplined. Without needing a command, they shifted, creating a defensive wedge, ready for impact. Aaron's group, seeing the practiced efficiency, instinctively moved closer, filling the gaps, but not so close as to completely merge. It was a clear, unspoken sign that while their immediate survival depended on cooperation, the underlying tension and unresolved issues still lingered, a fragile bridge built over resentment.

More numbers meant better odds. A surge of desperate hope flowed through the ranks, each student hoping that this larger, unified front would be enough.

Tala raised her comm unit, her fingers fumbling slightly before she steadied them. "We are engaging a Wraith now. We have a decent-sized group, so we should be okay," she reported, forcing a calm into her voice she didn't feel.

The second the words left her lips, a chilling whisper echoed through the swamp, no longer just a growl, but a clear, resonant voice. It seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere, surrounding them, seeping into their very bones.

"Oh, little human," the voice purred, dripping with ancient amusement and contempt. "What makes you think that?"

A second Wraith solidified out of the swirling fog, materializing beside the first. They were still in the distance, ethereally floating, yet the air around the students grew colder, heavier, charged with a new, potent despair. The fog and the teeming horde of Wretches surged forward with renewed, terrifying speed.

The voice continued, this time laced with a horrifying chuckle that made a few students wince, instinctively clutching their heads. "You think you know us?" Its ethereal form solidified further, taking on a more defined, somewhat humanoid shape. A semblance of a human expression twisted onto its face, a mask of cold, amused derision.

"Child, you are merely toys being played with by higher powers," the Wraith intoned, its voice chilling to the core. "Ohh, how I pity you, who lack the strength to decide your own fate. But unfortunately, we have orders."

The final word, orders, hung in the air, a terrifying implication. Then, the Wraith's amused expression vanished, replaced by pure, predatory intent. It let out a deafening roar, a sound that shattered the last vestiges of hope and sent a primal jolt of fear through every student.

The Wretches hidden behind the fog, already a surging tide of malice, responded instantly to the command, breaking into a full, horrifying sprint. Their jagged claws scraped against the muddy ground, their snarls rising into a frenzied chorus. They were no longer just a swarm; they were a war unit, crashing towards the combined student ranks.

"Brace!" Aaron roared, his voice barely audible over the advancing horde, raising his axe.

"Hold the line! Do not let them break through!" Tala yelled, drawing her own staff slicing through the air, its soft glow suddenly seeming pitifully small against the encroaching darkness.

The clash was immediate and brutal. The first wave of Wretches slammed into the student formation with sickening force. Blades met snapping jaws, mana shields flared then cracked under the sheer weight of numbers, and the swamp turned into a maelstrom of desperate cries, piercing shrieks, and the wet, tearing sounds of combat.

Above it all, the two Wraiths floated, silent now, their glowing eyes fixed on the unfolding chaos below, watching the"toys" break under the weight of their commanded assault. The battle for the source of the Hollowed had just become a desperate fight for survival, and the students were horribly outnumbered, trapped between an unforgiving Academy and an intelligent, merciless enemy.
