Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Father and Son

"Thanks for walking me home."

On the forest path, Lana walked with her hands behind her back, a smile gracing her small face.

"Oh, no problem." Clark scratched his head, smiling shyly.

Instead of staying at the club to clean up after school today, he'd gone to the place where Lana worked in town to help out.

As they walked side by side, Clark felt wonderful.

However, just like every story eventually ends, after they passed through the dense woods, a two-story villa with lights on appeared in their sight.

"Alright, I'm home." Lana took a few steps forward, then turned to face Clark, saying somewhat awkwardly, "I wanted to invite you in, but my aunt is really upset about the house getting trashed. She's been very angry lately…"

"I know."

Clark scratched his cheek understandingly and pointed to his farm not far away. "Well, good night then."

Lana smiled and waved:

"Good night."

Clark watched the girl leave, a feeling like he'd eaten honey blossoming in his heart. A happy smile on his face, the boy turned and ran towards his own home.

"Boom!"

Before Clark could even reach home, a terrifying explosion roared, its massive sound enveloping the entire town like a terrifying peal of thunder.

"What was that?!"

Clark looked in the direction of the sound, only to see leaping orange flames accompanied by thick smoke rising to the sky, illuminating half of it.

"Whoosh!"

Clark didn't hesitate. He started running towards the fire.

Like a blur, Clark easily rushed to the scene of the fire.

"Crackling!"

On the highway, an overturned oil tanker was engulfed in burning flames, and the surrounding trees had also caught fire. If left unchecked, the nearby forest would be swallowed by the flames.

"I have to stop this disaster."

Clark's expression was serious. He activated his Super Speed and searched the nearby residents' homes for a fire extinguisher.

He carried the fire extinguisher, his figure darting back and forth across the fire scene.

With the terrifying speed, only a blur could be seen constantly searching for fire extinguishers around the town and moving back and forth from the oil tanker. The fire was also steadily weakening.

"Pshhh!"

Another fire extinguisher was discharged, and the burning flames were finally put out.

"Hoo… hoo…"

Clark was breathing heavily, wiping sweat from his face.

"This…"

Clark looked around and soon found two charred, mummified bodies in a scorched ruin.

Dehydrated, the two bodies looked like two burnt sticks. Clark couldn't tell their cause of death, only attributing it to a natural disaster.

"They're dead."

Clark looked at the two bodies with some guilt. "If only I had been nearby, I could have saved them."

The sound of police sirens in the distance interrupted Clark's thoughts.

The boy knew he couldn't stay here. He let out a deep sigh and turned to run into the distance.

Clark crossed the road, bypassing the approaching police cars, until he saw an unexpected figure walking down the road at an extremely fast pace.

His tall stature and elegant demeanor made Clark frown slightly, a vague uneasy suspicion forming in his mind.

"Jino!"

Clark called out the man's name.

Jino was walking along the road, taking a stroll. Upon hearing Clark's voice, a hint of helplessness appeared on his face.

He had just thrown Watt into the oil tanker to be "charbroiled" when Clark discovered the fire and rushed over?

Clark rubbed his hair, his tone unnatural. "It's so late. What are you doing here?"

He was a little worried that Jino caused the fire, but he believed Jino must have had a reason.

Listening to Clark's words, Jino scoffed. Clark's way of talking was too naive.

Sighing, Jino pointed to the night sky above his head. "Me? I'm here watching the stars and taking a walk."

In the small town without industrial pollution, many bright stars twinkled with a brilliant glow.

"Then, did you see that fire just now?" Clark's expression was serious. "Two people were burned to death."

"What does that have to do with me?" Jino glanced at Clark, walking as he spoke. "I told you on the first day of school, Clark, I don't like to meddle. If I ever do, it means I'm in a good mood."

This was, of course, a lie. Jino just wanted to get rid of Clark. Otherwise, if Clark found out he had killed Watt, that guy would start with another heap of preachy nonsense.

"So sometimes, the truth doesn't matter; only a lie can satisfy both parties."

Clark looked at Jino suspiciously, listening to his words. "Are you sure?"

"Believe it or not, I'm going home." Jino waved his hand, not wanting to argue with Clark.

Whoosh!

Clark watched Jino disappear into the night, leaving only an afterimage, his eyes thoughtful.

What exactly is the truth?

Luthor Manor.

As Jino approached the manor's dark, massive iron gate, he saw several Rolls-Royce cars parked on the lawn inside.

His gaze swept over the license plates from Metropolis behind the cars, and Jino couldn't help but crack a playful smile. "Oh, wow, looks like someone's about to have a bad day."

"Young Master."

The old butler opened the iron gate for Jino. "The Master is in the main hall."

"Hmm, Lex might not be in a very good mood tonight."

Jino chuckled. His cheap older brother and Lionel didn't get along.

Simply put, when two strong-willed individuals got together, it could only lead to disaster.

Before he even reached the living room, Jino heard the clashing of metal swords from within.

Upon entering the main hall, two figures in protective gear were engaged in a fierce duel.

As the Rapier strikes intensified, the figure on the right quickly found it difficult to parry, which gave their opponent an opening.

Thwack!

A Rapier pressed down on the other, then thrust forward sharply along the blade.

The blunted tip of the Rapier rested against the throat of the figure on the right, and a cold snort came from beneath the victor's mask.

"Heh, you seem to have a lot to learn."

Lionel removed his mask, revealing a grim face.

Thud! The loser ripped off their mask and angrily threw it to the ground. Lex stared coldly at his legal father, remaining silent.

Lionel dropped his Rapier and walked out of the manor, not forgetting to instruct Lex, "I want to see you lay off 20% by next week, kid."

Passing by the calm-faced Jino, Lionel glanced at his mysterious youngest son and said indifferently, "And you're responsible for watching him."

Lionel left with his secretary and assistants, leaving only a somber-faced Lex behind.

Jino chuckled softly and walked straight to the sofa. The maids, who hardly dared to breathe, quickly brought him fruit and milk.

Taking a bite of a crisp apple, Jino raised an eyebrow at Lex. "Our loser seems to be in a bad mood."

"Heh, the foolish old man."

Lex took a deep breath and picked up the helmet from the floor, his expression distant. "Just you wait. Sooner or later, I'll make him genuinely praise my endeavors."
