Chapter 21 - The Trial of Chains

The cathedral trembled with every step the guardian took

Chains clinked with unnatural weight, dragging behind its armored limbs. Its sword, longer than Syaoran was tall, scraped the stone with a whisper like screaming iron. Ancient runes danced along its edges—Veil-etched words of judgment, not war.

Syaoran stepped forward, the Veilforged blade humming faintly in his hand. He could feel the pressure—not just of power, but of history. The memory of this place curled around his lungs, suffocating.

Kira moved to his side

"You're not fighting it alone"

The guardian's voice boomed, shaking dust from the pillars

> "He must stand alone "

"His burden"

"His echo"

"His sin"

Syaoran looked at Kira, then nodded once.

"I'll face it."

---

Aris pulled Teren back toward the broken wall. "This isn't a fight. It's a weighing"

Teren nodded. "It's not testing his blade. It's testing his soul"

---

Syaoran stepped into the ring of runes surrounding the tomb.

They flared to life—gold and red, burning with heatless fire.

The guardian raised its blade and charged

The first clash sent sparks flying

Lightning met stone

The shockwave knocked dust from the ceiling, but Syaoran held his ground, sliding back but not falling. The Veilforged sword vibrated in his grip, hungry, alive.

Again the guardian struck—overhead, then low, then with a spinning arc that should have split Syaoran in half.

But he was faster now.

Each movement came not from thought—but from instinct.

Like he'd done this before

---

The guardian paused, its eyes narrowing behind the slit of its helm.

> "You remember"

"The war"

"The fire"

"The girl"

Syaoran's grip tightened.

He lunged—his blade sparking with lightning. The strike connected, cutting into the guardian's arm. Veillight spilled from the wound, not blood.

The chains on its back shivered

Then struck

---

A loop of rusted steel coiled around his wrist and yanked him off balance. Another wrapped his leg. Then a third lashed across his chest and pulled him to his knees.

The guardian loomed above him, sword raised.

> "Do you still carry guilt?

Or only power?"

---

Images exploded behind Syaoran's eyes!

A battlefield of ash

A girl's face in the fire

A voice"You let me die"

A tower falling from the sky

A throne of bones and lies

He screamed

Not in fear

In rage

Lightning exploded from him in a white-hot surge, shattering the chains. The guardian staggered, its blade cleaved in two by the blast.

Syaoran stood, panting, eyes glowing gold and blue.

"I don't know who I was" he said.

"But I know who I won't become"

---

The guardian stepped back.

Lowered its broken weapon.

And knelt.

> "Then you are no longer his shadow.

You are the storm that follows"

The runes around the tomb flared one final time—then dimmed.

A section of the wall behind the guardian slid open, revealing a hidden chamber.

Inside: a fragment of obsidian, veined with gold lightning.

A Shard of the Fifth Seal

---

Teren gasped. "A Seal fragment… here? That means—"

Kira turned to Syaoran, stunned. "They weren't destroyed. They were scattered"

Aris looked deeper into the tomb, her voice quiet.

"This war's older than any of us"

Syaoran picked up the shard

It pulsed with warmth

And whispered

> "We're not done"
