The air in the subway station was a mix of stale air, a hint of something metallic, and the sharp scent of damp concrete. The rumble of a train approaching was a low, resonant thrum in the floor. Adam stood on the crowded platform, watching the river of humanity flow past him. He felt an unsettling calm, a hollow feeling in his stomach. A small, red arrow appeared above a man walking down the stairs, his hands full with a coffee mug and a briefcase. He looked tired, his shoulders slumped. He was just a regular guy. The System was asking him to do something cruel, something petty, for a handful of points. The request was so… simple. So easy. So utterly monstrous.
No. Absolutely not. The System is crazy. This is a sick joke. Why would it ask me to do something like that? It's not a moral compass, it's a sociopath with a point system.

He saw it. The man, with his hands full, was struggling to hold his briefcase and his coffee. Adam quickly reached out a hand, not to trip him, but to steady him. He placed his hand on the man's lower back, a gentle, guiding touch that helped him regain his balance on the slick, wet step.
The man looked back, his eyes wide with surprise.
"Hey… thanks, man. I almost… I almost went down."
"No problem,"
Adam said, a small, genuine smile on his face.
"Be careful. Stairs can be tricky."
The man nodded, offering a small, grateful smile of his own.
"Yeah. Thanks again."
He walked on, his shoulders a little less slumped, his step a little more confident.
Adam turned back to the System. The quest notification was still there, a mocking presence. But then, as he watched, it changed. The red text of failure was replaced by a brilliant, triumphant blue.
