As the Poké Balls opened, Misty sent out her Goldeen and Starmie, while Ethan and Ash both released their respective Squirtle. The four Pokémon submerged, and at the nearest ship window, they simultaneously used Tackle.
The continuous impacts gradually shattered the window, eventually forming a large hole wide enough for two people to pass through at once. Because the opening was already completely submerged in seawater, no additional water surged in, and it had no effect on the cabin's air pressure.
When the Pokémon returned to their Trainers, Brock took out several clotheslines from his backpack and tied everyone's bodies to their respective Pokémon.
"Hey, hey!" Seeing that everyone else had a Pokémon, Jessie anxiously cried out, "What about us? We don't have any Water-type Pokémon!"
Ethan then released his Magikarp. In the anime, Team Rocket's trio relied on this very Magikarp to escape the sinking ship. He found it ironic that even with a new owner, it couldn't escape this fate. James looked down at the flopping Magikarp and immediately recognized its origin. "Ah, isn't that the Magikarp from that crooked salesman!"
Ethan nodded gently. "That's right. I bought it for 500 yen."
"That scumbag!" James clenched his fists, gritting his teeth. "And he talked it up so much! This Magikarp really was only worth 500 yen!"
"Alright," Ethan said to the Team Rocket trio, "Let this Magikarp take you out. But I'm telling you upfront, it looks a bit dim-witted and might not understand human language. If anything unexpected happens along the way, I'm not responsible."
"That's right," Misty added, "And don't you dare try any tricks, or we'll leave you behind to fend for yourselves!"
"Don't worry, you all!" The Team Rocket trio quickly shook their heads, looking small and meek. "In a life-or-death situation like this, why would we cause trouble?"
"Exactly, Meowth!"
Despite their assurances, Ethan pointed at Meowth and said, "Just in case, Meowth, you come with me."
Meowth looked stunned. "Huh? Why, Meowth?"
"Idiot, of course, it's so you can be a hostage," Ethan said, then looked at Jessie and James. "Once we're back on the surface, if you want Meowth back, make sure to take good care of my Magikarp. Otherwise, I'll have to use it to settle your debt."
Meowth stared at Ethan with terror, realizing it was being held hostage, while Jessie muttered under her breath, "How come this guy is more like a bad guy than us!?"
With everything arranged, Ethan recalled Kirlia to its Poké Ball and tied Meowth to his waist. Brock then picked up several empty water bottles and handed them to the others.
"I don't know if this method will work, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Everyone, take one."
Ethan took out his phone and snapped a few pictures. Though unfortunate, this was a rare, once-in-a-lifetime experience, certainly a precious memory. He then put his phone, Pokédex, and wallet into a sealed plastic bag, and after sealing it tightly, wrapped the bag securely in a raincoat before putting it into his backpack.
Finally, he took out his diving goggles and put them on, then retrieved his underwater rebreather. Although he could swim, he wasn't a strong swimmer. He couldn't swim fast, nor could he open his eyes underwater like the others. However, this underwater rebreather was actually just a portable mini oxygen tank. Its compressed air could provide three minutes of oxygen under normal conditions. He wondered how long it would last at this depth.
Aside from him, everyone else had an empty water bottle in their mouths, looking quite comical. They eyed each other, their faces full of amusement.
Seeing that everyone was ready, Ethan put the rebreather mouthpiece in his mouth, gave an 'OK' sign, and along with them, successively entered the water.
The current beneath the surface was relatively calm. Pulled by Squirtle, Ethan barely had to exert any effort himself; his body was swiftly dragged a considerable distance. Following the corridor, they swam for another dozen meters and finally saw the window that the Pokémon had shattered.
They exited the cruise ship in an orderly fashion, then changed direction and swam towards the surface. Sunlight penetrated the seawater, leaving blurry light and shadows. Visibility was low, and beyond a few meters around them, it was pitch black. In the faint light, Ethan could clearly see Misty's white legs kicking in front of him, quite eye-catching.
She really looks like a mermaid…
Just then, the water bottles in their mouths, due to the water pressure, the impact of the current, or their own breathing, all deformed. They had no choice but to take a deep breath and abandon their bottles one by one.
They swam up a few more meters. Ethan glanced back and saw that behind him, Jessie and James's ropes had somehow become entangled. Their bodies spun continuously, creating a counter-force with Magikarp!
Seeing this, Ethan quickly pulled the rope at his waist. Squirtle turned back, and seeing Ethan's signal, it swam back to Jessie and James. Ethan extended his hands, wanting to help untangle the ropes, but the two were so tightly bound that no matter how Ethan pulled, he couldn't separate them. Just then, a figure flashed past. It was Misty, who, seeing the others falling behind, had come to help!
Even with her help, they couldn't untangle the ropes immediately. Finally, Meowth, unable to stand it any longer, used its sharp claws to snap the rope around James's waist, freeing them from their predicament.
However, disastrously, during her struggles, Jessie's foot accidentally kicked Misty in the abdomen. Misty felt a sharp pain and instinctively opened her mouth. Instantly, bubbles erupted from her mouth. Seeing Misty running out of air, Ethan quickly pulled out his underwater rebreather from his mouth and handed it to her. Misty didn't hesitate. She quickly took the rebreather, put it in her mouth, and took a deep breath. This action truly saved her life.
Misty returned the rebreather to Ethan and gave him a thumbs-up, indicating she was fine. Ethan nodded, waved to Squirtle, and with Misty, each grabbing one of James's arms, they resumed swimming upward with the help of the two Pokémon.
After the previous incident, the rest of the journey was smooth. The light above grew brighter and brighter. Finally, after swimming up another dozen meters, they broke through the surface of the sea, completely escaping the danger.
Ethan and his companions, including the Team Rocket trio, have successfully escaped the sunken S.S. Anne and resurfaced! Ethan's preparations and quick thinking proved vital in their perilous underwater escape, especially in aiding Misty.
Where will they drift to next, and what new challenges or opportunities await them after this harrowing experience at sea?
