Chapter 59 - Finals exam (7)

The chilling silence that followed Mysterio's announcement was more unnerving than any monster's roar. The name itself, "Black Queen Spider," carried a weight of dread, a legend whispered among deep-dungeon adventurers. They stood at the precipice of a new, terrifying challenge, the promised shortcut to Floor 10 guarded by one of Astabal's most infamous inhabitants.

"A massive web, Adam," Mysterio's voice reiterated on the comms, a low rasp, now tinged with a professional assessment. "It spans a chasm, easily hundreds of meters wide. The webbing is incredibly dense, almost solid in places. And the concentration of biological signatures within it is… disturbing."

Adam peered into the gloom ahead. Even with their enhanced vision and light sticks, the sheer scale of the web was immense. It shimmered faintly, catching the ambient light, an intricate, terrifying tapestry woven across an unseen abyss. The air grew heavy, damp, and carried a peculiar, sickly-sweet scent – the unmistakable odor of a spider's lair.

"So, the shortcut is directly through her territory," Julian stated, his voice grim. "No way around?"

"Negative," Mysterio confirmed. "I've scanned all accessible pathways. This chasm, and the web within it, is the only consistent route to what the Guild maps indicate as the Floor 10 shortcut entrance.

Other paths on this floor lead to dead ends or even deeper into Ape and Lizard territory."

Adam felt a grim determination settle over him. This was it. The obstacle was clear.

"Alright, team," Adam's voice was firm, cutting through the heavy silence. "This is what we prepared for. Borin gave us fair warning. Edward, Tom, what's our tactical assessment? We need a plan to kill the Black Queen Spider."

Edward, his crimson eyes glowing with an ancient, analytical light, stepped forward.

"The Black Queen is a creature of immense power and cunning. Her primary strength lies not just in her physical attributes, but in her environment. The webs are her fortress, her sensory network, and her traps. Her venom is potent, and her spiderlings are a distraction, designed to overwhelm and disorient before the main attack."

"Her size will make her a formidable opponent," Roman rumbled, "but it also makes her a large target."

"A large target, but heavily armored," Mei Jing countered softly. "And likely agile within her own web. We must target her vulnerabilities."

Tom, his data-pad active, brought up a holographic projection based on Mysterio's scans, showing a rudimentary map of the chasm and the web structure. "The web appears to be a multi-layered structure.

There are denser sections, likely for structural integrity and egg sacs, and looser, more intricate sections designed for trapping. We can use that to our advantage. The Queen herself seems to be located deep within the densest part of the web, near the center of the chasm."

"The key is to minimize contact with the webs," Julian advised. "Any touch could alert her, or worse, entangle us."

"And the spiderlings," Astrid added grimly. "They'll swarm. We can't let them overwhelm us. Their venom might be weaker than the Queen's, but enough of them can paralyze."

Adam listened intently, integrating their insights. "Okay, here's the plan. We focus on a multi-pronged assault, designed to keep her off balance and isolate her from her web-based advantages. This is a raid, not a protracted siege."

He pointed to the holographic map. "First, Mysterio, your role is crucial. You're our lead. Your stealth is our greatest asset here. We need you to infiltrate the outer layers of the web, identify the densest concentrations of spiderlings, and find a secure entry point for the rest of us. Scout for any obvious traps or structural weaknesses in the web itself. Report back the moment you have a clear path."

Mysterio gave a sharp nod, already anticipating his task.

"Once we enter," Adam continued, "our priority is to eliminate the spiderlings quickly and efficiently. We cannot let them build up.

Roman and Panchenko, you'll be our frontline. Focus on wide, sweeping attacks to clear swaths of them. Edward, you'll be their anchor, ensuring no spiderlings slip through and that no major web traps snare them."

"Julian, Astrid, Mei Jing, Ronda – you're our agile melee specialists. Your job is to swiftly move through the swarm, disabling spiderlings with precise, low-energy strikes.

Conserve your strength for the Queen. We need to clear them out before they can swarm us effectively."

"Tom, you'll be directing our movements, feeding us real-time data on spiderling concentrations and the Queen's location once she becomes active. Identify any structural weaknesses in the web we can exploit."

"And I," Adam concluded, "will provide ranged suppression and precise targeted fire. My meta pistols can disrupt the spiderlings' formations, or focus powerful blasts on any larger ones. I'll also be watching for the Queen's initial movements once she senses our presence."

Edward then added, "Once the spiderlings are dealt with, the Queen will engage. Her primary mode of attack will be through her venom, either sprayed or injected via bite.

Her webs will also be used as offensive tools. We must avoid direct contact with her fangs and any liquid she expels. Her body will be armored, but her joints, the underside of her abdomen, and her eyes will be vulnerable. We will need to draw her out, to force her onto a more stable platform, if possible, where her web-agility is lessened."

"Precisely," Adam confirmed. "Roman and Panchenko, you'll bait her. Get her attention, draw her attacks. Your durability will be key.

Edward, you'll be her primary counter, absorbing or deflecting her venom and web attacks. Julian, Astrid, Mei Jing, Ronda – you'll be her primary damage dealers. Hit her vulnerabilities, relentlessly. Mysterio, if you can find a way to distract her or create a momentary weakness, do it. Tom, keep us updated on her movements and vital signs. I'll provide concentrated fire on her weak points, or disrupt her movements."

"This is a coordinated strike," Adam emphasized, looking at each of them. "Every person has a critical role. No heroics, no lone wolf attacks. We move as one. We hit hard, and we hit fast. We're getting that core."

A grim, determined silence filled the air. The plan was sound, though executing it against a creature of legend would be the true challenge.

With the plan solidified, they moved towards the massive, shimmering web. The peculiar, sweet, metallic scent grew stronger, almost cloying. Mysterio, a mere shadow against the dark backdrop, slipped forward, his movements so fluid and silent he seemed to melt into the web's periphery. His comms unit remained silent for a tense few minutes as he conducted his reconnaissance. In

"Entry point identified," Mysterio 's voice finally came through. "Small fissure in the lower-left section of the web, leads into a less dense area. Minimal spiderling presence for now. Marked it on your HUDs."

"Excellent," Adam confirmed. "Everyone, stay tight. Follow Mysterio's lead. Edward, you're the last one through. Let's go."

One by one, they carefully entered the Black Queen Spider's lair, a sprawling, multi-layered nightmare of sticky, shimmering strands. The web was indeed massive, forming a complex, suffocating tunnel system within the chasm. The floor beneath their feet felt strangely resilient, a combination of solidified web and rock.

Hundreds of glowing, sickly-green egg sacs, suspended within the web, pulsed with an unsettling inner light.

The air inside the lair was thick and still, resonating with a faint, high-pitched scuttling sound that seemed to come from everywhere at once. The smell was overpowering now, a pungent, organic stench that made their stomachs churn.

They hadn't taken more than fifty steps before the first wave hit. From every conceivable angle – from cracks in the web-walls, from behind dense curtains of silk, from the very floor – the spiderlings poured out. They were roughly the size of a human torso, with multiple glowing eyes, sharp fangs, and chitinous bodies that clicked and clacked as they scuttled. Their sheer numbers were horrifying.

"Spiderlings!" Tom's voice barked over the comms, his sensor readings going wild.

"Massive swarm! Coming from all directions!"

"Formation!" Adam roared, his meta pistols already spitting energy. "Clear them out! Fast and clean!"

The battle began. This was a chaotic, overwhelming surge of venomous creatures.

Roman and Panchenko immediately became a devastating wall of death.

Roman's greatsword swept in wide arcs, severing multiple spiderlings with each swing, sending their segmented bodies flying. Panchenko's spear jabbed and thrust, impaling three or four spiderlings at a time, his movements a blur of controlled aggression. They roared their defiance, clearing swathes of the creatures, creating a temporary safe zone.

Adam's meta pistols blazed, laying down relentless suppressing fire. He targeted the densest clusters, his energy blasts incinerating dozens of the creatures, disrupting their charges, and preventing them from overwhelming the frontline. He aimed for the glowing eyes or the softer underbellies, making every shot count.

Julian and Astrid moved with incredible speed and precision. Julian's sword was a silver blur, striking with surgical accuracy at the spiderlings' legs, disabling them quickly.

Astrid, using the dense web as both cover and a launching point, darted through the swarm like a vengeful spirit, her daggers flashing, striking critical points before darting away. They were a constant, lethal dance of death, ensuring no spiderlings could slip past the main defenders.

Mei Jing, with her martial arts, was surprisingly effective against the chitinous bodies. Her powerful kicks shattered their exoskeletons, her quick jabs crushed their smaller limbs. She moved with fluid grace, turning the spiderlings' own numbers against them, forcing them to stumble and collide.

Ronda was a force of pure, kinetic energy. Her powerful punches and kicks sent spiderlings flying, often impaling them on their own discarded legs. She acted as a mobile buffer, rushing to any point where the swarm threatened to break through, clearing it with devastating efficiency.

Edward remained a silent, unyielding sentinel at the heart of their formation. His movements were minimal, but devastatingly effective. Any spiderling that managed to slip past the outer ring found itself effortlessly parried, deflected, or simply crushed by a single, casual, yet immensely powerful, strike. He seemed to exert an aura that instinctively made the smaller creatures hesitate.

Mysterio, for his part, was invaluable. He moved independently, his masked form appearing and disappearing within the labyrinthine webs, striking at the source of the spawning, identifying larger, more dangerous spiderlings, and using small, precisely placed sonic emitters to disrupt their formations, giving his team crucial moments of respite.

The fight against the spiderlings was a grueling, protracted affair. The sheer number of them was overwhelming. They were not particularly tough individually, but their relentless, coordinated swarming tactics were designed to exhaust and overwhelm.

The air became thick with the smell of ozone and burnt chitin. Their armor was coated in slime and spider silk, their bodies aching from the constant movement and strikes.

But Adam's group had a plan, and they executed it with grim determination. Their teamwork was flawless. They protected their most vulnerable, supported their strongest, and ensured a continuous, lethal offensive.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the numbers began to thin. The last few waves of spiderlings, lacking the fervor of the earlier onslaught, were quickly dispatched.

The terrifying clicking and scuttling sounds gradually faded, replaced by the heavy, ragged breathing of the adventurers.

"Clear," Tom's voice came through, strained but relieved. "All spiderling signatures gone. The area is secure."

Adam looked around the carnage-strewn web chamber. They were all exhausted, covered in grime and some sticky web, but they had prevailed. The first, overwhelming hurdle of the Black Queen's lair had been overcome.

"Good job, team," Adam panted, holstering his pistols. "That was… intense. But we did it. All spiderlings are dead."

He then looked towards the center of the web, where Tom's sensors indicated the massive signature of the Queen. The profound silence that had descended now felt pregnant with anticipation. The lull before the storm.

"Now," Adam said, his voice low, filled with a grim, unwavering resolve. "It's time. Prepare to engage the Black Queen Spider."
