Chapter 37 - The Original Sin Spell

The Original Sin spell was something Cate had created when she felt perhaps the greatest humiliation of her life. At that time, she had been living as a severed head for over five hundred years. Countless people had used her to turn others into stone under the name of righteousness. She did not see these people as heroes, and the people she was forced to turn to stone were not villains in her eyes. To her, the heroes and the villains were just people on opposite sides of beliefs and politics.

Cate had been betrayed and cursed by the gods, turning her into a monster. At that time, the person who "owned" her head used her to try and kill a god. Cate had learned her lesson about defying the gods, and at that time, she broke her silence and spoke for the first time in centuries. She warned the person carrying her head to give up on whatever they were planning. The man who claimed to own Cate/Medusa's head at that time was a Roman general named Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus. He was a genius and understood war better than most people. Still, he had too many enemies, and so he used Cate's head to win countless battles. He even used it to defeat Hannibal at the Battle of Zama. This allowed Scipio to end the Second Punic War. With this victory, Scipio became a great hero to his people. Cate had liked Hannibal more than Scipio, but she had no control over how her power was used.

After using Cate's power to win such a great battle, Scipio attracted the attention of the gods. Mars, the god of war, was especially displeased by how this war had ended. He thought that the use of Medusa's powers to defeat a general as great as Hannibal was cowardly and unbecoming of his domain. He descended and warned Scipio never to use this power in battle.

Scipio was still high on his victory, and so he did not heed the god's warning. He instead plotted to defeat Mars himself. He was sure that this would bring him honor greater than anything he had ever had. His name would be immortalized, and he could even become a god himself. Cate's warnings fell on deaf ears.

Scipio plotted and schemed until he believed that he had the perfect plan. Everything went well until the last step. He forced Cate's eyes open and made her look at Mars, whom he had lured to the mortal plane. The god turned to stone in a matter of seconds. Scipio cheered and boasted of his greatness. Cate could only watch in horror at the foolishness of this mortal who dared defy the gods. She remembered how she was once foolish. After just a few seconds, the statue of Mars exploded, and the god came back as though nothing had happened. He was furious and had no mercy for Scipio. Mars ripped the man into countless pieces and deposited his remains at the four corners of the world. Mars looked at Cate for a second before leaving. Cate understood that Mars did nothing to her only because he knew that this was her punishment, and it was suffering greater than death.

The true details of Scipio's death were hidden from the world, and after that, no so-called hero dared use Cate's head to go against the gods. During that encounter with Mars, Cate got the inspiration to create the Original Sin Spell. The way Mars looked at her allowed her to truly remember how helpless mortals were when faced with gods. Even her petrification power, which was great enough to kill any monster, was simply a joke to them.

Cate began thinking of how she could increase her power for when she finally got the chance to face her enemies once more. She thought of the Vault of Souls, but even this was not enough to end the gods. The vault was powerful, but it was not a weapon. It was said that it could only grant immortality to whoever opened it. The legends said nothing of the vault actually having the power needed to fight a god. Gaining immortality was only the first step to facing the gods. One also needed great power.

Cate thought of many ways to gain power. She created countless forbidden spells, and in the end, she created the Original Sin spell. This spell tapped into powers beyond magic, powers older than the gods. The spell could truly grant Cate power enough for her to no longer feel weak at the mere thought of the gods. There was even the possibility of her surpassing the gods once she used this spell and invited the powerful forces of the Original Sin into her body, soul, and blood. Still, the price to be paid for using this spell was so severe that Cate had not used it until now, when she had to choose between death and her revenge. She chose revenge and decided that no matter how great the price, it was not comparable to her desire to wipe out the gods.

The alpha did not give his people time to think about the way they had been looked down on. He grasped the earth with his bare feet and shot out like a bullet. His speed in this moment was even greater than what Cate saw from the vampire a few weeks back. The alpha was powerful, and his desire to rip Cate into pieces was intense, but he was unfortunate not to be up against Cate, but Medusa, who had used the Original Sin spell. When the alpha moved, Cate saw him as though he were moving in slow motion. He was fast to everyone else, but in Cate's eyes, the man was annoyingly slow.

Cate looked him over from head to toe, and this was when a strange thought crossed her mind. "How can he be so juicy?" She uncontrollably licked her lips before she moved. Her desires took over, and reason left her. When Cate came back to her senses, she was surrounded by white skeletons. She was covered in blood, and there was something in her mouth. The taste was heavenly, and even though she was confused about what she was doing, she continued chewing.
