An Ethereal Sanctuary
Deep within the forest, where towering trees reached for the sky, a small lakeside shimmered into view. Untouched by human hands, it presented a chaotic yet naturally cultivated, almost fantastical, scene. And there, on the edge of the lake, an old manâthe Creator Godâlay with his eyes closed, feeling the wind that wove its way through the trees.
This lakeside had become his favorite spot ever since a certain day. Though his duties prevented him from visiting frequently, he loved it enough to come whenever he had a moment to spare.
A shadow fell across his face.
"Father, are you sleeping?"
"I'm awake."
"...What are you doing?"
"I was appreciating the atmosphere."
""
The girlâRosheedaâlooked down at him, peering into his face, and tilted her head, asking, "Atmosphere?" He opened one eye and gazed at her. Her pure white hair, once cut to her shoulders, now reached her back, tied neatly with a ribbon in what could be called a ponytail. Her height, which used to be around his waist, had grown by about ten centimeters, and her figure had begun to change, taking on feminine characteristics.
Three years had passed since he first met Rosheeda. The girl, now stepping into adulthood, had grown into a remarkably beautiful young woman in his eyes. He'd recently heard that men were pursuing her. Upon hearing this, he had intended to "have a word" with these men to ascertain if they were worthy of Rosheeda, but she herself had stopped him. Apparently, she wasn't interested in romantic relationships at the moment and turned down all such advances. Incidentally, though he typically addressed everyone with a "-kun" honorific, she had explicitly told him she disliked it, feeling it created "a wall," so he had started calling her by her given name.
After tilting her head, she seemingly decided further thought was futile and shrugged, sitting down beside him.
"I've decided on the name."
"...Name?"
"Did you forget? You said you didn't have a name, so I told you I'd give you one."
"...Ah, now that you mention it, I did say something like that."
It was a few days ago. He didn't remember the exact flow of conversation, but Rosheeda had suddenly asked for his name. She had apparently asked others, but they only replied, "Creator God-sama is Creator God-sama," so she decided to ask him directly. However, having never been called by anything other than his divine title since his birth, he simply stated that he had no name. She then looked visibly surprised before saying...
"It's sad that you don't have a name. Then I'll give you one."
After that, she placed a hand on her chin, twisting her head and muttering, "Hmmmm." Honestly, whether he had a name or not didn't matter to him, but since she was thinking about it so earnestly, he decided to wait and listen. However, she couldn't seem to come up with a good name, so she decided to think about it until their next meeting.
"So, have you decided?"
"...Spass."
"Spass?"
"Yeah. It means 'enjoyment' or 'to enjoy.' You seem to be enjoying yourself lately, and I enjoy being with you, so I thought it was a perfect fit."
"Spass... Spass, you say... Hmm, I think that's good."
"Really? Oh, good. I was worried you wouldn't like it. It also means 'joke,' so I thought it was perfect for a father whose existence is like a joke."
"My existence is like a joke!?"
He gaped in astonishment at her sudden outburst. Could this be that famous rebellious phase? It was said to be a hellish period for parents, where children who had grown to a certain extent inevitably passed through it, becoming annoyed with their parents, or even refusing to see them. As if seeing through his trepidation, Rosheeda chuckled.
"Just kidding. I was just teasing you a bit."
"That's bad for my heart."
When he deliberately clutched his chest dramatically, Rosheeda apologized with a laugh, "Sorry, sorry." For someone who worshipped him, this scene might have caused them to faint with their eyes rolling back, but for them, it was just another everyday interaction. He had accepted Rosheeda calling him "Father" simply because it felt new, but as he spent more time with her, he came to know her character and quickly grew fond of her humble yet straightforward way of expressing herself. Now, he found himself wondering about her future (mainly concerning romantic relationships) and occasionally feeling anxious about whether she might eventually find him annoying, just like a real father would.
"...Yeah."
Suddenly, Rosheeda nodded once and sat upright. As he watched her, puzzled, she pulled a notebook from her pocket and quickly scribbled something.
"What's that?"
"Hm? It's a notebook for ideas. I'm thinking of writing a book."
"A book?"
"Yeah, I'm thinking a picture book might be good so children can easily read it..."
"What kind of content will it have?"
"Hmm... It's a secret for now. But once it's finished, you'll be the first to see it, Father."
Rosheeda looked at him, seemingly debating whether to tell him, then shook her head, choosing not to reveal it. He was curious but didn't press her. Since she promised to show him when it was finished, he would look forward to that day.
"Alright, Father. You have plans this afternoon, don't you? If you don't go now, you'll keep everyone waiting."
She stood up with a small grunt, brushing off her bottom with her hand, and prompted him to stand. He reached out a hand to her.
"Pull me up."
"Are you a child?"
"Even adults sometimes wish they could return to being a child."
"What are you saying, trying to act cool?"
He smiled faintly, affecting a suave expression, and received a side-eyed glare from his daughter, but his spirit wasn't so fragile as to be broken by that, nor was their acquaintance a short one. Besides, having done this exchange many times, he could easily predict her next move.
"...Hmph, fine, I guess."
She sighed, then smiled and took his hand. He loved her smile in that moment, and the fact that he initiated this exchange every time was his little secret.
A God's Choice
"Excuse me, Creator God-sama."
"? What is it, Elyshifan-kun?"
The scene shifted. Back in the nation, the Creator GodâSpassâwas in his office, reviewing compiled reports from various regions. A knock came at the door, and upon granting entry, Elyshifan, the First Prince of the nation, stood before Spasswith a serious expression.
"To be blunt, I ask that you refrain from contact with that woman."
"!?â...Did you follow me?"
"My sincerest apologies. I deeply regret causing you displeasure. However, I did not follow you. I merely overheard that you recently inquired of your ladies-in-waiting about the hobbies of young women your age. Please forgive my presumptuous actions. If you wish, I will offer my life to you here and now."
"There's no need for that. More importantly, why such a request?"
His usual gentle aura vanished, replaced by a piercing glare that fixed on Elyshifan. For an ordinary person, the intimidation would turn their face pale and make their legs give out, but Elyshifan showed not a hint of fear.
"It is for the sake of this nation. The self-growth plan, where you, Creator God-sama, have been encouraging people to expand their own potential for the past three years. Isn't it possible that this sudden initiative was influenced by that woman?"
"...I am undertaking that only because I judged it to be necessary. She has nothing to do with it. And is there a problem with it?"
"Indeed, we understand that you are thinking of us. However, constantly striving to enhance one's own power is not something everyone can do. In fact, I hear there are already complaints emerging within the nation about the current situation."
Elyshifan wasn't lying. While people had previously relied entirely on Spass, some were now unable to continue striving for self-reliance and were grumbling. It wasn't enough to cause the nation to split, but it was clear that cracks were appearing in the nation's once-solid foundation.
"Those reports have reached me as well. However, only by overcoming that obstacle can you truly advance to a higher stage."
"...Humans are not as strong as Creator God-sama believes. Without your power, they are fragile beings who cannot even live adequately. That is precisely why strong individuals like you and I must guide them."
"..."
"Or has that woman somehow gotten a hold of some weakness of yours?"
"What!?"
"If so, please leave it to me. Those who act disrespectfully towards our God have no right to live."
"Elyshifan-kun..."
"Eliminating a mere girl is a trifle."
"Elyshifan-kun...!"
"Their life will atone for their deception against our Godâ"
"ELYSHIFAN-KUN!!!"
A thunderous roar echoed through the room, cutting off Elyshifan's words. Even Elyshifan showed a hint of alarm, his eyes widening slightly at the outburst.
"I will not permit you to lay a hand on her."
"...Understood. My sincerest apologies for my presumptuous actions."
After bowing deeply, Elyshifan turned on his heel and headed for the door... but stopped at the threshold, speaking to Spasswith his back still turned.
"I understand that Creator God-sama's will is firm. I am prepared to offer even my life for your sake. Please, do not forget that."
With those final words, Elyshifan exited the office completely.
"..."
For a while, Spasssimply stared at the door where he had exited.
Farewell at the Lakeside
"Are you really leaving?"
"Yes, I've already decided."
At their usual lakeside spot, Spassand Rosheeda sat side by side on the ground. While Spasswore a calm expression, Rosheeda's face was clouded with sadness.
"Couldn't you just do it little by little, without such a rush?"
"It's my own fault, but I've become too intertwined with them. Because of that, my existence only hinders their evolution."
It had been five years since he initiated the reform of the citizens' mindset. Ishvaldi had begun to change little by little, but at the same time, it faced a significant problem. Some citizens, who had come to take divine blessings for granted, had begun to openly protest. While it hadn't escalated to the point where the nation itself would collapse, as it was only a portion of the citizens, listening to the arguments of those they apprehended, Spassfelt as if the ground beneath him was crumbling.
"It's only natural for God to help us."
Though there were minor differences, the majority of those apprehended were clamoring such sentiments. He had indeed believed that protecting humanity was his mission. That hadn't changed. However, he now found it unacceptable for them to rely entirely on miracles and cease their own progress. The problem had begun to surface exactly last year. For this past year, he had constantly grappled with it. How could he convey his will to them? What was he supposed to do? The conclusion he reached was to do nothing at all.
If he remained, they would inevitably rely on him. Therefore, if he were gone, they would surely carve out their own future. Believing this, he decided to leave this land, this world, for a while. He hadn't informed the people of Ishvaldi. He knew they would undoubtedly oppose it if he did. He had stopped here to see Rosheeda's face one last time. If she hadn't been here, he would have had to travel to her town, so he was glad she was here. He only wanted to tell Rosheeda.
"...I understand. If Father has decided, I won't say anything. Will we meet again?"
"Yes, I don't know how many years it will be, but I will definitely return to you. I also want to see my daughter in her finest hour, you know."
"I told you I'm not interested in that... but... yes, it's a promise."
"Yes, it's a promise."
Rosheeda's expression brightened a little at Spass's words, and he felt a sense of relief. Spasswas about to part ways, but then decided to offer a piece of advice, not really a warning, about one particular person.
"Rosheeda. You know of Elyshifan-kun, the First Prince of Ishvaldi, don't you?"
"Hm? Yeah, I've seen him from a distance, but that's about it..."
"It's unlikely, but please be careful of him. He knows of your existence. That said, he only knows that there's a woman I'm close with, not your face. He was never too pleased about my closeness with you, so it's possible he might act now that I'm gone."
He recalled Elyshifan's words from two years ago. There was a chance he might conclude that Spasshad disappeared from the nation to be with her. However, since he only knew of Rosheeda's existence, not her whereabouts or appearance, there should be no problem.
"Well, just keeping it in the back of your mind is enough."
"Okay, I understand."
"...Then, I'll be going now."
"...Okay. Bye-bye, Father."
He felt a pull at his heart from her words, but he turned his back on his precious daughter and left the lakeside.
"..."
Rosheeda continued to gaze at Spass's retreating back until he disappeared from view.
