Chapter 18: A New Wand

As the Headmaster had said, there were not going to be classes for the day, so everyone was free to roam around.

Well, almost everyone, at least.

"Mister Potter, come on in," Professor McGonagall invited him inside her office.

"You wished to speak with me, Professor?" Harry had been summoned by the head of his house right after he was done with breakfast.

He did not have to wonder about the motives behind this summon for too long.

"I heard that you lost your wand," McGonagall said.

"Yes, at the cemetery." In reality, he had two wands right now, his old oak wand, and the one he took from the young Auror who fell from the stairs of his fortress.

Unfortunately, he could not use those two. The Headmaster and the other professors knew that his wand was made of holly wood, and he had already mentioned before that he lost it during the attack.

"Since the Headmaster made no mention of having recovered it during his trip… we can assume that… well, you are going to need a new one in any case." She tried her best to avoid touching the topic of Voldemort.

"We can take advantage of the fact that there are no classes today and make a quick trip to Diagon Alley."

"You want to take me shopping for a wand?"

McGonagall raised an eyebrow. "We have almost four more weeks of classes. You are going to need one for those, don't you think?"

Harry was considering her words. He didn't like the idea of getting another wand. But for the sake of keeping appearances, he didn't have much of a choice.

"Very well. Will you be Apparating us there?"

"No. Apparition inside the castle is not possible. The magical wards that protect this place won't allow the use of such magic. The only exception for that would be the Headmaster."

"I see. Then we will need to leave the premises before traveling," said Harry.

"There is no need for that. I have a Floo connection inside my office." She pointed at the fireplace in the corner.

"Floo connect—ohh, right." He was not familiar with that type of magic, but the other Harry had a short experience with it during his second year at Hogwarts.

"Have you ever used it before?" She handed him a small container with a green powder inside.

"Once." Harry took it and approached the fireplace.

"Minerva! What a pleasant surprise… and Harry Potter as well?" Tom, the owner of the tavern, greeted them when they appeared from the fireplace.

Harry had many memories of this place. Last year, he had stayed in the inn for a week before traveling to school.

He was also very familiar with the Alley itself.

"Hello, Tom. We just came here to pick up a few things from the Alley. We won't take long," McGonagall responded.

"Oh…" Tom made a troubled expression. "I heard some of what happened at the school." He gave Harry a glance. "I'm very sorry."

"Thanks, but… I really can't talk right now," McGonagall told the man as she began to walk away.

"No, I understand. It's fine," Tom told her before she crossed the door.

The professor then opened the way to the alley and handed Harry a small bag. "There should be enough galleons there for a new wand from Ollivander's. You think you can go by yourself? There is a shop I need to visit."

Harry took the money. "I believe I can handle it."

He felt relief when the professor went in a different direction, leaving him alone to do his shopping.

Even if he wanted to pretend that nothing had changed, and while having the memories of the previous owner of the body, it was very difficult to act like Harry Potter.

Their personalities were too different to make it work when interacting with people who had known the real Harry for years.

So the less he interacted with people, the better.

"Welcome," the old man behind the counter greeted him as he was opening the door. "Mister Potter," he then added.

"Good morning, Mister Ollivander," Harry answered.

"Holly, eleven inches," the man then said.

His eyes seemed to be scanning Harry, but he felt no mental intrusion.

"Is there a problem with the wand?"

"Actually, yes. I was attacked by some violent criminal and lost it," Harry told the old man.

"Attacked?" Ollivander raised an eyebrow. "The rumors were true, then. And was the wand broken or stolen?"

Harry shrugged. "I have no way to know that. But Professor McGonagall says that I need to have a wand for class, so…"

"I understand." Ollivander's expression showed a mixture of sadness and disappointment. "That is too bad… it was a very special wand, that one."

"Yes, it was." Harry just said what the man wanted to hear so they could move this conversation forward.

He just wanted to buy a wand and get out of here.

"Worry not, I'm sure we can find something for you in my shop." After saying that, Ollivander went to the back of his shop and began picking up boxes of wands from the countless shelves.

Harry cared little for the wand he sold him. To him, there was only one true wand for him, and it was the one he created himself.

'Mmm… now that I think of it, the author of the book that I used to learn how to craft wands was also named Ollivander.'

According to the sign outside the shop, this family had been in the same business for an extremely long time, so it seemed likely that this person was an ancestor of the old man in front of him.

"Now… let's try a few." Ollivander came back with five boxes and placed them in front of Harry.

"I believe these are going to be the most compatible ones with you, Mister Potter. But we will need to do some testing first." He opened the first one and handed it to him.
