Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 – Dreams

The battle between the Whitebeard Pirates and the Roger Pirates lasted an entire day. And that was with both crews holding back, worried they might damage their ships; otherwise, the fight would've been even more intense.

After the battle, Roger originally wanted to hold a banquet together, but Whitebeard seemed preoccupied and declined the offer.

Before the two crews parted ways, Fang Yi approached Vista, tossed one of his daggers at him, and said, "Next time, after I beat you, I'll come get this back. Until then, keep it safe! And don't let Pineapple-Ko mess it up!"

Marco, who wasn't even part of the conversation, caught a stray bullet and immediately started bickering with Fang Yi again.

"Gurararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararararar" Whitebeard laughed heartily.

"Hahaha! Don't say that—you're still not old yet!" Roger laughed along.

"Roger… what is it you're looking for out on the sea?" Whitebeard asked seriously before they parted ways.

He didn't know exactly what Roger's crew was after, but he could feel—they were searching for something.

"Me? I'm looking for the Final Island…" Roger looked up at the starlit sky and replied softly.

Whitebeard was stunned. He didn't quite understand what Roger meant.

"Hahaha… Newgate! Do you believe in dreams?" Roger suddenly laughed and asked.

"Of course," Whitebeard nodded. "So your dream is to find the Final Island?"

"That's right. When I set foot on the Final Island… I'll become the Pirate King!" Roger said earnestly.

Whitebeard looked at him, stunned. If anyone else had said that, he would've assumed they were delusional—but for some reason, if it was Roger… he might pull it off.

After the two crews separated, Roger immediately announced a feast.

Fang Yi, however, wasn't in much of a party mood. He wanted to reflect on today's battle—to figure out what mistakes he made that could cost him in a real fight.

"小毅, come drink with us!" Peter called out, holding up a jug of liquor.

"No thanks. You guys go ahead. I'm gonna rest a bit. Today's fight wore me out," Fang Yi replied with a smile.

Peter shrugged and didn't press the issue.

Taking a deep breath, Fang Yi opened his status screen:

Looking at the lack of major skill improvements, Fang Yi sighed. Aside from a few nice items earned from draw tickets obtained during the Whitebeard fight, the past five years had made him numb to the gacha system.

It was like those exploitative game companies from his previous life—pull you in with good rates at first, then destroy your hope.

Still, all the attempts did give him a ton of EXP scrolls, allowing him to grind his Lethality skill to Level 3 and boost several others.

Even if the trigger rate was low, the effect was game-changing, so he kept grinding in hopes it would one day turn the tide of a real battle.

His points were almost at 10,000—not because he earned little, but because he kept spending them. The shop didn't offer much of use… except draw tickets. And once he saw one, he couldn't resist.

As for his stats—strength, agility, and stamina—all those "legacy powers" he'd absorbed helped him grow. That's why he could keep pace with prodigies like Shanks, and even suppress someone older like Marco.

In five years, Fang Yi had seen much of the world with the Roger Pirates, though they hadn't found many Poneglyphs—and no clues to the Road Poneglyphs at all.

He sometimes thought about telling Roger the truth, while his body was still healthy. After all, these crewmates were family to him now, and he didn't want Roger to meet the same fate.

But he never found a good excuse. Secrets like that couldn't just be blurted out and trusted.

Even if Roger believed him, it would affect their bond. So Fang Yi hesitated.

But after hearing Roger's conversation with Whitebeard, Fang Yi realized that Roger's journey should be his own. Just like in the original story, when Luffy stopped Usopp from asking Rayleigh about the One Piece.

He didn't care what the treasure was—or even if it existed.

Going to sea in search of the One Piece... that was the dream. Nothing else mattered.

"Woof! Woo…!"

Fang Yi was pulled from his thoughts as Wangzi trotted over, interrupting him.

"You again? You've been drinking, haven't you? Are you a dog? Sometimes I wonder if you're a human who ate a Zoan-type Devil Fruit," Fang Yi said, wrinkling his nose at the smell of alcohol on Wangzi's breath.

The dog had grown big, standing on all fours, and reached Fang Yi's chest, just a bit shorter than Shanks or Bucky.

When he reared up, he was taller than a grown man.

And despite his size, he was fast—so fast that Fang Yi couldn't match him in a sprint unless he used "Shave," and even then, only for short bursts. In long runs, Wangzi outpaced him easily.

His swimming was even more ridiculous. Sanbell, the Fishman, admitted that Wangzi was faster than he was underwater.

Even more baffling—Wangzi could understand nearly everything the crew said, and sometimes acted smarter than Bucky.

Now that Wangzi had snapped him out of his brooding, Fang Yi joined the crew and started drinking.

Thanks to the crew's "training," his alcohol tolerance had skyrocketed, and he no longer got drunk easily. So they shifted their attention to Bucky and Wangzi instead.

Wangzi had come to Fang Yi for help. Yamon never sided with him, so Fang Yi was his only ally in the drinking war.

"Picking on a dog? You guys have no shame! Tonight, nobody's leaving!" Fang Yi declared, raising a barrel of booze.

"You cheeky brat! Guess we'll have to remind you what it felt like to get bullied back in the day!" The crew responded in kind, determined to take him down.

But they quickly realized Fang Yi was in top form. He wobbled on the edge of collapse—but never went down. So they just kept drinking harder.

"Hmph! Think you can beat me? I'm not that little kid anymore!" Fang Yi declared smugly as the crew fell around him.

"Fang Yi, you're a beast…" Shanks gave him a thumbs-up. Not even he could survive the crew's tag-team drinking assault.

Fang Yi gave a proud smirk, then dropped like a rock, snoring instantly.

Even with a detox potion he'd pulled from the lottery, it wasn't enough to save him from a crew-wide drinking ambush.

Shanks looked at his unconscious friend, paused, then smiled and grabbed another bottle, heading back to the others.
