Chapter 55 - 20. The Corruption of Nightfall

In the heart of the frozen continent, amidst a raging storm, Merslin and his companions pressed onward toward the Fortress of Darkness, resolved to find and utterly destroy the source of the Shadow-kin.

At that very moment, however, Nightfall was reminiscing on his throne in the deepest part of the fortress. The screams and explosions of a battle fought thousands of years ago still echoed in his ears.

Nightfall, whose true name was Elios. He was once the most revered Paladin of Light in the kingdom. Wielding the Sun Sword to protect his home, he was always flanked by his loyal companions, Kyra and Rendal.

But the kingdom's peace was shattered by a terrible curse: the 'Soul-Devouring Plague'. This plague, which annihilated the soul beyond the flesh, could not be cured by any holy magic. Even Elios's closest friend and companion, Rendal, fell to the plague, writhing in the agony of his soul's slow erosion.

Plunged into despair, Elios discovered one final hope: a forbidden ancient artifact, the 'Heart of the Void', which he believed could absorb and purify the plague's energy. The king, the queen, and Kyra desperately tried to stop him.

"Elios, that artifact is too dangerous! No one has ever been able to fully control its power!" Kyra pleaded.

But Elios's mind was made up. "I cannot let Rendal, my people, die like this. I will bear all the risk."

He finally obtained the 'Heart of the Void' and, with Rendal on the verge of annihilation, used the artifact's power on him in a ritual to purify the plague's energy. However, the malevolent will contained within the plague and the unstable power of the 'Heart of the Void' clashed violently and went berserk.

"No...!"

A colossal magical explosion erupted, and Rendal's soul was utterly obliterated on the spot. And all of it—the plague's now-masterless energy, the thousands of vengeful souls it had consumed, and the full power of the Void—surged into Elios's body.

His body was seized by an agony that felt like being torn apart, while the screams and resentments of countless souls consumed his mind. He was no longer Elios, the Paladin of Light. He had been reborn as 'Nightfall', a living prison for thousands of tormented souls, a collective of darkness.

Later, when Kyra found him amidst the ashes, she screamed through her tears, "Elios! Please... come back to your senses!"

Nightfall looked at her with empty, cold eyes. His voice was a bizarre chorus of dozens, hundreds of voices layered upon one another. "...Elios... is gone. We... are Nightfall. This endless screaming... must be silenced."

His new goal was not conquest or destruction. It was to absorb all life in the world into himself to end all pain and consciousness—a twisted salvation of his own discovery.

Nightfall shook his head as if to cast off the memories. The screaming in his ears subsided. He could feel a new aura of light at the fortress entrance.

"New souls have arrived... To them as well... eternal rest."

Nightfall rose from his throne, his resolve firm. He was ready to greet Merslin and his companions. His goal was not to defeat them. It was to 'save' them.

The party arrived at the Great Gate of the fortress, ready for the final battle. "We will find the source of the Shadow-kin here and vanquish this darkness forever," Merslin declared.

Kaila, Daren, Sera, and Ria stood beside him, weapons ready. "Together, we can do anything. Let's find the source of the Shadow-kin and save this world," Kaila said.

With the elite soldiers of the alliance, the party prepared to enter the Fortress of Darkness and face their final battle with Nightfall and the Shadow-kin.

Episode 56: Entering the Fortress of Darkness

The allied forces of the kingdoms gathered before the Fortress of Darkness on the frozen continent. A frigid wind whipped at their skin, and snow was piled up to their ankles.

Kaila, Prince of Luminaria, raised the Sun Sword high and addressed his soldiers. "Today, we will bring down this Fortress of Darkness. All soldiers, prepare yourselves!" The soldiers nodded with grim determination.

Adeon, Prince of the Frontier Kingdom, offered words of encouragement. "Victory here will decide our future. Let us all fight as one!" The soldiers roared in response.

Merslin led the charge toward the citadel, where a legion of Dark Knights awaited them at the Great Gate. "We must open that gate," Merslin said resolutely.

Kaila raised the Sun Sword. "Soldiers of Luminaria, with us!" He struck the gate with the sword. A blast of solar light hit the gate, momentarily dispelling its dark aura. The gate slowly began to open, revealing the interior of the fortress.

As it opened, they witnessed an incredible sight. The Dark Knight legion was marching out from within in perfect formation. Clad in black armor, they fixed their glowing red eyes on the allied soldiers. They were at least three meters tall, and their presence was immense. The stone bridge connecting to the gate thundered under the weight of their march.

"We must break their momentum," Merslin said.

As the battle began, the Dark Knights summoned dark steeds and charged. Kaila met the charge, his Sun Sword blazing. "We must stop the cavalry!" he shouted.

The Luminarian soldiers formed a shield wall, while the Frontier champions met the charge with spears. Daren summoned giant tree roots to entangle the dark steeds. The battle for the bridge was fierce. The Ancients' forces were strong enough to fight the giant knights on equal terms, but they were outnumbered.

"We are outnumbered, but we will fight believing in our strength!" one of the Ancients shouted to Merslin.

"We fight together, and we win together!" Merslin encouraged him.

In the midst of the battle, a giant Dark Dragon flew up from the depths of the fortress, breathing a torrent of fire that indiscriminately swept over friend and foe.

"We must stop the dragon!" Merslin yelled. Kaila charged the beast, his Sun Sword flashing. "The light of the sun will vanquish this darkness!"

As the party focused on the dragon, two colossal beings emerged from the fortress: a Brontaur, a giant, bull-like humanoid, and a Kregor, a goat-like creature. The Brontaur swung a massive axe, while the Kregor unleashed powerful magic, posing a grave threat to the allied army.

Just as they were facing this new menace, a host of Trolls appeared, charging not at the alliance, but at the new giants. "We will fight with you," the Troll leader said to Merslin. "The Shadow-kin are our enemies as well."

"Your help is a great strength!" Merslin replied gratefully. "Together, let's defeat this darkness!"

With the Trolls' powerful assault turning the tide against the Brontaur and Kregor, the allied forces rallied. Merslin and his companions cooperated to subdue the two giants. As they fell, the fortress courtyard grew quiet. The battle for the entrance was won, but more threats remained inside.

"We did it," Kaila said. "But it's not over. We must go inside the fortress."

Merslin nodded with a resolute expression. "We will find the source of the Shadow-kin and vanquish this darkness forever."

They prepared to enter the citadel for the next battle, moving forward to break the power of darkness. Deeper inside the fortress, even more powerful enemies awaited them.

Episode : The Hall of Shadows

Merslin and his elite forces pushed deep into the Fortress of Darkness. Sporadic battles still raged in the outer citadel, the glint of blades and spears flashing across the night sky. Allied soldiers and the Dark Knight legion continued their bloody, fierce engagement. The battle to capture the great towers was also proceeding with urgency, and the blood-stained stone walls of the fortress revealed the grim reality of the war.

Before the charge, Kaila raised the Sun Sword high and shouted to the soldiers, her voice resolute. "Our objective is the Hall of Shadows, located deep within the fortress! Expect strong resistance at the front lines, so all of you be prepared!" At her words, the soldiers' expressions filled with fierce determination, and the trembling in their hands, which gripped their weapons tightly, ceased.

Adeon, Paladin and Prince of the Frontier Kingdom, moved among the soldiers and spoke in a powerful voice. "We will drive out the darkness with the power of light! Let us all fight together with every fiber of our being!" The soldiers responded to his encouragement with a great roar, their confidence renewed.

During the strategy meeting, Merslin spoke calmly but firmly. "We must move as quickly as possible. The enemy will also be in disarray due to the bombardment from the Blood Elves. We must use this opening to penetrate deep into the fortress."

No sooner had Merslin finished speaking than an intense magical barrage rained down upon the fortress. A red flash, visible from afar, tore through the sky and struck the high walls of the citadel, the impact spreading throughout the entire battlefield. The Blood Elves, from the top of the fortress, began to pour down magic, bombarding friend and foe alike. The battlefield instantly became a scene of pandemonium, and soldiers were thrown into confusion, unable to distinguish between ally and enemy.

"Everyone, take cover!" Merslin shouted, rushing forward. He quickly formed a defensive wall to protect his comrades, but many soldiers fell in the aftermath of the bombardment. The allied lines began to break, and the battlefield, filled with the deafening roar of explosions and the screams of soldiers, was the very pinnacle of chaos.

"We have to evade the bombardment and get inside the fortress!" Kaila shouted, raising the Sun Sword high to rally the scattered soldiers. "Let us all trust in the light of the sun and advance!"

Adeon held his shield before him and activated a powerful defensive magic. The bombardments that reached him were blocked and scattered by the barrier of light, buying the soldiers a moment to catch their breath. "Move with composure! The shield of light will protect us!" At his firm command, the soldiers finally reformed their broken lines and advanced toward the fortress gate.

Merslin and his party, leading a mixed unit of Ancient soldiers, Elven warriors, and champions from the Frontier Kingdom, pushed deep into the Fortress of Darkness. As they moved down the citadel's corridors, the air grew heavier and pressed down with a palpable darkness.

As they neared the Hall of Shadows, the atmosphere within grew even more sinister. Ancient ritualistic symbols and magical glyphs were carved into the walls, emanating an energy that seemed almost alive as it enveloped the hall. Kaila held the Sun Sword high in one hand, illuminating the fortress's gloom. Its light barely pierced the depths of the hall, revealing the secrets hidden there.

"In this hall, we will surely break the power of darkness," Merslin said resolutely. "Everyone, stay vigilant. Trust in each other and let's fight as one."

As they approached the center of the hall, dark creatures began to reveal themselves. Shadow Demons, Wraiths, and Dark Golems appeared at the front, while Hellhounds and a giant Abomination blocked the path ahead. A red light gleamed in their eyes, and an aura of darkness spread in all directions.

Sera, moving with agility to target the enemies' weak points, said, "These dark creatures have specific weaknesses. Everyone, be mindful and let's focus our attacks!"

Ria, protecting the soldiers at the front with healing and defensive magic, shouted, "We are all together! Do not tire, let us gather our strength as one."

Daren used his power of nature to push back the hall's darkness. "The power of nature will not be tainted by darkness. Let us advance with this power!" The tree roots and strong winds he summoned impeded the movements of the dark creatures, securing space for the allies.

However, the situation grew more desperate when a Shadow Beast was summoned. This colossal dark creature blocked their path, spewing powerful dark magic. "The darkness will swallow you... None shall survive!"

Merslin commanded without a moment's hesitation. "We must subdue the Shadow Beast! Everyone, focus and let's defeat this monster!"

Kaila, her Sun Sword blazing, leaped towards the Shadow Beast. "I will end your darkness here!" she cried, emitting a powerful light to parry the beast's blow, buying time for the party to mount a defense.

The Shadow Beast used illusion magic to try and confuse the party. Its body split into multiple copies, making it impossible to distinguish the real from the fake. The soldiers were thrown into chaos, and there were dangerous moments where they almost attacked each other.

"Don't be fooled by the illusions!" Merslin commanded the soldiers, destroying the copies with lightning arrows. "Everyone, focus! This dark creature is trying to test our unity!"

The Shadow Beast then used void magic, attempting to absorb the allies. Space warped as a powerful force that sucked everything in descended upon the party. Merslin gathered all his magical energy and shouted to save his companions. "Everyone, destroy the void! Focus and let's break this dark barrier!"

Kaila charged into the void with the Sun Sword held high. "With this light, I will shatter the heart of the darkness!" Her sword radiated a powerful light that destroyed the void, and in that instant, its suction force vanished.

The Shadow Beast attempted a final, desperate attack, but it gradually lost its strength under the party's unified assault. Finally, Merslin and his party succeeded in subduing the Shadow Beast, and a brief silence fell over the citadel. As the Shadow Beast's last breath faded, a true stillness settled, but Merslin did not let down his guard and turned his head toward their next objective.

"Our fight begins now," Kaila said with a determined gaze. "This is not the end. The source of the darkness lies deeper within this fortress."

Merslin nodded. "We will find the source of the Shadow-kin and destroy this darkness forever. Everyone, be ready."

With a newly hardened resolve, the party gripped their weapons and headed for the deeper parts of the fortress.
