Selene opened her eyes with a grin on her face, when Caelum noticed that she hadn't actually fainted. It turned out that from the start, she had only been faking it because she wanted to get back at them.
"You're observant, huh? You can tell that I didn't really faint," she said.
"When I heard that you fell unconscious in the field because the female prisoners tried to smother your face. That's an absurd thing to happen, especially to someone like you," Caelum replied.
she seated herself and then raised one leg to rest her head on her own knee.
"I knew you were a different person, and knew who you were meeting. Unlike them, those fools who don't realize I'm just pretending."
She remembered once when Rona smothered her with a cloth to her face, she knew that they were trying to give her a warning. That's when she started acting like she was panicking and wanted to escape, which made the other prisoners laugh at her reaction.
However, no one would have guessed that Selene had planned this and that she had deliberately pretended to have a seizure so that they would immediately become so panicked. Especially when she fell unconscious.
She was also the one who deliberately nudged the barrel with her foot, causing it to fall over and make a loud noise. Causing the prison guards to come to find the female prisoners trying to hide their bodies.
"You'd even do anything to beat up a man who dares to mess with you. There's no way you're going to go down just because of a bunch of women who can't fight back at you." Caelum pulled out a chair near the bed and sat down.
"Bingo."
She looked at him, then smiled mischievously. "I thought my acting was perfect. Even you wouldn't have guessed that I hadn't actually fainted. But it turns out that my opponent is indeed on the same level as me."
"No one can get past my supervision here. I've been a Chief Warden for 8 years and have a good reputation. I'm not going to ruin my reputation for a criminal who likes to think of my prison as a playground," Caelum said firmly but softly.
"Eight years already? Aren't you only 28 years old? Oh, you became a chief from a very young age? Your family is of military descent, it's not hard to get the best position," Selene said.
Caelum seemed to flinch when he heard her words. He himself had entered the military at the age of 16. He was chosen to be the chief of the strict prison because his reputation in the barracks was very good.
Before he could speak, Selene interrupted him again. She said that Caelum must have been chosen not because of his family name. It was because he was suited to be a chief.
"If you've had a good reputation so far, it's not surprising that they chose you. Let alone keeping you for eight years. I'm sure they can see your performance not just because you're from the Rothwell Family," she said.
The man was silent, at first he thought that Selene was saying he could be in that position just because of his family name. Instead, she continued her sentence by saying that Caelum must have worked hard to maintain his position and reputation.
Just that simple sentence, where Selene seemed to see the hard work he had put in, made Caelum feel like there was something inside him.
It was as if the world had finally seen the results of his hard work to be where he was today. It wasn't that the shadow of the Rothwell name on his name made everything he did look easy because he came from a prominent Zondalian family.
"Are you competing with someone to show you're the best?" Selene asked again.
He sighed with his eyes closed for a moment then opened them again, looking at her.
"That is none of your business. What I want to emphasize here is that you can't play around in my prison. You might be able to trick them, but not me," he replied.
"I know, you were very different from the start. That's why I was so attracted to you when I first saw you in front of me," Selene replied.
She then sat on the edge of the bed, so as to get closer to him. "There's something about you that draws me closer and closer to you. You have incredible charm, a handsome face and also a way of speaking that sounds so... I can't explain it. But I really like it."
"Is this how you attracted the attention of your previous victims?" asked the Chief Warden.
She chuckled. "You might be right. I could have used this method to seduce anyone who would become my victim. Including you."
"But take it easy..." She leaned closer to his face. "You don't have any reason for me to vanish like them. I know you're not an easy guy to seduce either. So why would I intentionally flirt you if I have nothing to gain from it in the end?"
It was obvious that he would not be easily seduced by anyone, including her. However, she said that if Caelum fell for her temptation in the end, she would gladly catch him.
"I won't let you fall, and I'll catch you in my arms," she said with a wink.
"Keep dreaming," he commented and took out a file folder from under his coat.
He held the folder in front of her. Selene wondered what file he was currently holding and why he was showing it to her.
"The court has been looking into your family background and your past."
The smile on Selene's face trembled slightly, as if she was about to lose that sly smile. When she heard the words 'Your family', she seemed to lose her composure.
Caelum realized this and read the contents of the file folder in his hand.
"Is there anything you want to say before I read the contents of the file I'm holding right now?" he asked.
"I don't think there is anything I want to tell you. If you've read it, you can just throw it away because I don't want to hear what's in the file," Selene replied, her tone now sounding very cold.
Caelum, however, replied that he would not throw the file away and would keep reading it, as he wanted to confirm the true story from Selene herself.
"Whether you're happy or not is none of my business because I'm here to find out. Whether the contents of this file are true or not," he said in response to Selene's earlier words.
Because he was absolutely sure that the background of Selene's life was one of the reasons why she had committed this crime for almost two years.
After a moment of silence, Selene finally agreed although she let out a long sigh and nodded her head.
"Alright, tell me. Because I'm sure the contents of that file are not something I'd be happy to remember."
