# Chapter 24
Without serving an apprenticeship, Eutostea immediately became a priestess.
Female temple servants and priestesses had different roles. Female temple servants were in a position of performing small rituals of worship and welcoming those who came to meet with god. Priestesses had the privilege of communicating closely with god, and by planning and operating large-scale events, such as a celebration, they had the responsibility and obligation for the prosperity of the temple. The reason Pythia, Apollo’s priestess, received respect was that she was leading Delphi, a huge organization, on behalf of Apollo.
The rise and fall of the temple were immediately connected to the reputation of the god or goddess they worshipped.
