Chapter 9: Next Stop: Make Up Shop

Ju-kyoung glanced at herself in the mirror, trying to adjust her eyebrows.

"I'm pretty sure my eyebrows were brown before I wñ%ent to school this morning," she mumbled, frowning.

The thought of going back to school looking like this irritated her. She picked up her phone, snapped a picture of her face, then sat upright on her bed.

She opened her beauty group chat and posted the photo, typing:

"Is my makeup really that bad? I want to stop being an outcast before transferring schools. Help me out."

Ju-kyoung stared at the picture again and sighed, frustrated.

"This is awful. Are you a ghost?" someone commented.

She squinted at the photo.

"I think the foundation is too white," she muttered, reading another comment aloud:

"Do something about your caterpillar brows."

Her brows furrowed as she touched them gently.

"Caterpillar...?" She turned to the mirror.

"Oh my goodness—they do look like caterpillars!"

She continued reading until one comment stood out:

"Check out the third most popular post. It will help."

"Most popular post?" she repeated, clicking the link.

A video popped up. A graceful lady with a beautiful face and a confident smile appeared on the screen. Her hair was neatly styled, and her presence was elegant.

"Hi, pretty ladies! Here's how to make your eyes look twice as big!" she chirped.

The video showed a before-and-after of her makeup transformation. Her uneven brows were reshaped into sleek black arches that perfectly framed her face. Then, she applied makeup gently—just a little foundation, some light eyeshadow, and soft lipstick.

Ju-kyoung watched every step closely, her eyes shimmering with curiosity.

"I can't even tell the difference. Incredible," she whispered.

Then the woman explained,

"The foundation should be exactly your skin color."

"Oh..." Ju-kyoung nodded slowly, absorbing the advice.

She stood up and went to her wardrobe, spotting a small black box tucked inside. Her face grew serious.

She opened the box and saw a message written inside:

"Emergency Tool. Don't open unless it's really important. Is it really important, Ju-kyoung?"

Ju-kyoung nodded firmly. "Yes. It is."

Inside was a small hammer. She picked it up and opened another cupboard, revealing a cute pink piggy bank with a hole on its belly.

"Sorry, Piggy," she whispered, gripping the hammer.

"This incident almost cost my parents their marriage," she thought as she looked at the piggy bank.

"But it's my chance to live a new life."

She lifted the hammer and struck. The piggy bank shattered, coins and bills pouring out like water.

Two Days Later – Saturday Morning

Ju-kyoung woke up early. It was Saturday—no school, luckily. Ever since she broke the piggy bank, her mind had been made up.

After watching that makeup video, she was determined.

"I can do it this time," she said to herself, getting dressed.

She tiptoed out of her room, careful not to wake her mother who was sleeping in the living room. She crouched down and crawled across the floor like a ninja.

Suddenly—

"Where are you going?" her mother's voice called out, low and firm.

Ju-kyoung froze. Her heart pounded as she slowly stood up, trembling.

Her mother was still lying on the chair, her eyes closed, hair messy, face sweaty.

"Where are you going?" her mom asked again, still half-asleep.

Ju-kyoung exhaled in relief.

"She's sleep-talking…" she muttered.

Then she quickly tiptoed toward the door and slipped outside.

As soon as she got out, she jumped with joy, pulled out her phone, and grinned.

"Next stop: make up shop!" she whispered, giggling.

"Hehehe!" she chuckled as she ran down the stairs.
