Chapter 212 - 212 Relic Custodians

As they used a levitation lift to reach the bottom in the shortest time possible Christopher turned towards him.

"You know those blowhards in the royal court aren't going to let this go, right?" he said with a smirk.

"I'm aware and I don't care. Sometimes they need to be reminded that they don't control this kingdom."

"Perhaps," he conceded. "But I don't think blatantly ignoring their summons on a busy dock is a good place to remind them."

"That's their own fault. They could have accepted that we needed rest and sent someone to the mansion to wait for us."

Christopher chuckled as he shook his head.

Of course, Chronos wouldn't do anything to harm the people sent by the royal court, that was taking it too far. But if they insisted on doing unreasonable things their way, like today, he could still threaten them and refuse to listen for a couple of days.

Making them wait wouldn't hurt anybody and the nobles in the city would talk about it for the next week. Causing the royal court some embarrassment.

The worst part for the royal court was that once the King heard about it, he might intentionally delay calling for Chronos just to make the court wait longer.

From what little Chronos understood of politics in the Leighla Kingdom the kingdom was currently split into three factions.

The King's Faction was a gathering of those that sided with the king and supported his views. Seeking to support both the people and the king they often clashed with the Noble Faction that wanted to put the nobility first.

The royal court, despite their name, was a part of the Noble Faction that wanted to replace the king with a nobility led government.

They were trying to achieve something similar to the Grand Concord Federation or the Shield Federation as they were commonly known.

The Shield Federation had been led by royalty and nobility in the past but after the merchants were able to essentially buy out the royals and nobles it became a federation led by a council of merchants.

The Noble Faction wanted to do something similar in the Leighla Kingdom and have the kingdom led by a council of nobles without a king, which the Kings Faction greatly opposed.

Then there was the Neutral Faction. They were much smaller than the other two but tried to keep the peace and balance of power between the three factions. Unfortunately, they didn't have a lot of influence just enough to sway the vote on problems where both sides disagreed.

Technically the Ulv household was a part of the King's Faction as they were strictly loyal to the King. However, unless the King was giving them a direct command, they would generally ignore all other nobles and royals to some extent.

And because they were a part of the King's Faction the Noble Faction had tried, and failed, to force Chronos into the royal court today.

He didn't know what they wanted to accomplish today but he still wasn't willing to go.

Upon reaching the bottom they found a carriage painted in Ulv family gray with red beast markings and black iron decorative fittings on it.

Off to the side Lyla saw a priest from the Tri-Goddess Temple coming towards the tower.

"Come on, let's get out of here before more trouble arrives," She rushed to get on the carriage after passing a note to one of the workers and asking him to give it to the priest.

As the carriage left the docks Chronos suddenly felt a glare on them and looked back to see a priest glaring at their carriage.

"Oh, so that's why you were rushing. I didn't think they would arrive so soon."

"Neither did I but I left a message telling them where I went so they can't be too angry with me."

Chronos laughed at her hopeful look. From the glare he had felt they clearly wanted her back at the temple immediately.

The Ulv family mansion was naturally in the noble quarters but that meant that they had a bit of a ride ahead of them. They would have to pass at least two checkpoints and ride up half the mountain before they reached his estate after all.

So, as they rode in the carriage, they admired the scenery that was passing their window.

Passing through the mages wall Sariah suddenly became very active as she pressed her nose against the window, admiring all of the institutes and mages towers they were passing.

"Gregory, what are those massive holes for? What about the tower with the floating crystals around it? How does that floating platform move further from the tower than it's supposed to? Can we stop and talk with those darkness mages? I think they can help me with my curses."

She asked questions incessantly while Gregory and Christopher, who was riding a horse next to the carriage, tried to answer everything she asked. Unlike the rest of them this was her first time in the capital, and all of the new magic was pulling her in multiple directions.

"Christopher once we arrive at the mansion assign a female personal knight to her, actually make it three female knights. I don't want to lose her somewhere in the city."

"Yes, Young Master," Christopher responded immediately while mentally calculating which knights would be able to keep up with her hyperactive mind.

When they reached the Noble gates, everyone had to descend the carriage as the Kings Knights checked it.

In the past some idiot had thought it was a good idea to smuggle a monster child into the noble quarters which had led to a rampant monster rat problem for a time. So now every carriage including the Kings was checked for contraband, monsters, or other illegal products.

And to ensure that nobody could pay off the gate guards the ones performing the check were always the Kings Knights who had sworn to protect the King with their life.

But today there was another order examining the carriages with them. Standing in front of Chronos were three men with the badges of the Relic Custodians.

An order that served the Archivists Tower and was dedicated to locating and sealing dangerous artifacts.

"We are the Relic Custodians who work for the Archivists Tower and today we have been informed that a dangerous relic is in your possession. Present the relic so that it may be sealed," their leader demanded.
