Chapter 6 - Revenant’s Trial

The forest was no longer a place of life.

Ash clung to the roots of ancient trees. Bark peeled in strips like old skin, and the mist—once a soft veil—now writhed with hostile intent. The clash with the Revenant had stained the world itself, bending reality at its edges. And at the center of it all stood Lyle, bloodied, breath heaving, fists wreathed in ghostflame.

Muka crouched beside him, claws slick with ichor, fur bristled and eyes narrowed. Juno hovered just above the ground, half-formed in her ghost-state, her expression unreadable. But Lyle could feel her worry surging through their bond.

The Revenant circled them slowly now.

His blindfold had slipped, revealing sockets filled not with eyes—but with swirling red mist, each containing the faint silhouette of a screaming face. He bled from the mouth and shoulder, yet stood tall. And he was smiling.

"You've inherited more than just Quinn's shadow," he rasped. "Your flame… it's alive."

Lyle didn't answer. He couldn't afford to.

His entire body trembled from the clash. The gauntlets had nearly drained him, and the Revenant's curse had rattled his thoughts like broken glass in a jar.

But one thing kept him standing.

Juno's hand on his back—not physical, but the warmth of her presence, anchoring his focus. Even as the Codex pinged warnings, even as Muka tensed beside him ready to sacrifice herself again, it was Juno's bond that pulled him from the edge.

The Revenant's cleaver scraped the ground as he spoke again.

"You reek of restraint," he said. "You could've killed me back there, had you given in."

"I'm not like you," Lyle spat, tightening his fists.

The Revenant laughed. "But you will be. You've stepped onto the path. There's no turning back."

He raised his cleaver again.

And the Codex snapped.

Not the interface. The sound came from deep inside his mind—like a vault door unlocking.

Lyle stared at the message.

It wasn't a skill. It wasn't a stat boost.

It was a truth.

And the Revenant was watching him closely now—waiting. Almost... expecting.

Juno floated closer. "Lyle," she whispered. "Don't do it."

"I have to know," he said.

And before either of them could stop him, he accepted.

> Consuming 1 Soul Token…

Initiating Memory Stream…

---

The forest vanished.

Replaced by a storm of shadows.

Lyle stood at the edge of a massive canyon where two armies once clashed—beasts and blood-drinkers, soldiers and spirits. And at the center was Quinn.

Not as a warrior.

But as a king.

The world stretched and twisted, tearing Lyle's awareness from his body and hurling it into shadow.

But it wasn't death.

It was memory.

Not his own—but Quinn's.

And the Codex made sure he saw everything.

> Initiating Memory Fragment: "Exile of the Shadow King"

Warning: Perspective Anchor – Quinn Talen. Emotional Residue Present.

Lyle's vision snapped into focus.

He stood—no, Quinn stood—atop a ruined throne carved from obsidian, surrounded by swirling mists. Beneath him stretched a shattered plain dotted with burning spires, broken altars, and a thousand kneeling vampires. Their armor was chipped. Their eyes hollow. War had claimed them all.

Except him.

A younger Quinn towered over them, his shadow dancing wildly behind him—alive, sentient, as if it whispered threats into the minds of everyone watching.

Blood dripped from the corners of Quinn's mouth.

A crimson sword hung loosely in his right hand.

And in his left—a dying child.

Not human. Not vampire.

Something in-between.

"Let it be known," Quinn's voice echoed, laced with fury, grief, and the weight of a thousand betrayals, "that I cast down the Elders not for power… but for survival."

The crowd murmured.

A noble stepped forward—one Lyle vaguely recognized from old tomb engravings: Lord Veyar, the former Arbiter of the High Council.

"You've broken the chain of balance," Veyar said. "The gods will not forgive this. Nor will the blood."

Quinn raised the child higher.

"She's mine," he said coldly. "You made her. You used her. Now I will remake her."

Lightning split the sky.

The memory twisted again.

Now Lyle stood at the edge of a different battlefield. The throne was gone. The nobles scattered. And Quinn—older, wounded—stood alone on a cliff as three colossal figures descended from above. Not vampires. Not human.

Something worse.

God Slayers.

And one of them… bore the face of the Revenant.

Lyle gasped and staggered as the memory ended.

He fell to one knee, vision reeling, ears ringing. But Juno was there—gliding to his side in ghost-form, her pale hand brushing against his shoulder with tangible warmth.

"Are you okay?" she asked, her voice thin, nearly ethereal.

"I saw… his exile," Lyle murmured. "The Revenant was one of them. One of the ones who came after Quinn…"

Muka didn't wait for an explanation. Her hackles rose.

"Then we end him."

The Revenant took a slow step forward, eyes still locked on Lyle.

"So," he said, amused. "You saw the truth. That broken memory… that half-chained moment of defiance. Did it change your heart, boy?"

Lyle stood.

"No," he said quietly. "It confirmed it."

His gauntlets reignited, faint ghostflame trailing up his arms.

"I'm not like Quinn," Lyle continued, stepping forward. "But I'll carry the part of him that didn't fall. And I'll protect the people he couldn't."

Behind him, Juno's form shimmered with white flame. Her ghost state now pulsed with a faint blood-red glow—a mark of her bond deepening. Even the Codex pinged.

The Revenant's smile faded.

"Then I'll bury you both."

He raised his cleaver.

"Come, son of shadow."

The Revenant raised his cleaver—its edge glowing with corrupt ki, trails of crimson-black flame dancing off its jagged surface. The ground beneath him cracked as the surrounding ruins pulsed in rhythm with his presence. Dust lifted. Reality strained.

And then he moved.

Not fast—but inevitable.

Lyle met the charge with everything he had. His soul gauntlets flared with layered enhancements—[Shadow Grasp] erupted beneath the Revenant's feet, but the creature tore through it like mist. He swung the cleaver with a force that fractured air.

Lyle vanished in a flicker of dark light, reappearing behind the Revenant just in time to see Muka land from above.

She came down like a cannonball—her body encased in shadow-forged armor that shimmered with the essence of devoured beast crystals. Her claws extended, twin sabers of curved obsidian, and she drove them into the Revenant's shoulder.

It screamed—not in pain, but in amusement.

"You think you're strong?" it laughed. "You are still feeding from the bones of my master!"

It slammed a fist backward. The impact launched Muka across the chamber, through a pillar, and into the far wall with a crunch.

Lyle turned—but didn't falter.

His heart was beating faster now.

Because Juno was glowing.

---

From across the battlefield, Juno's white robes whipped in the turbulence of ki and death. Her form blurred as she stepped forward—translucent and glowing like the full moon.

> Transformation: Ghost Form (Stage 2)

Trait Activated: Spectral Drain

Effect: Touch siphons ki from hostile entities. Bonus effect: Can anchor shadow-based allies in unstable fields.

She moved between Lyle and the Revenant like a pale flame.

"I'm not afraid of you," she said softly.

The Revenant paused.

Then its smile vanished.

"You're hers," it growled. "I remember that aura. The girl with the mirrors. The one who held the line when even the gods broke…"

Its voice became warped.

"You should be dead."

Juno's hands glowed.

"I was. But he brought me back."

---

The next few seconds blurred.

Juno phased directly through the Revenant's chest, her hands plunging into its cursed form. It screamed—a gurgling, guttural sound—and tried to twist away, but Lyle was already there.

With his gauntlets roaring and his own shadow spiking into a mantle behind him, he slammed his fist into the creature's face.

Critical Strike!

The Revenant reeled.

Muka returned—bloodied but grinning, her fangs gleaming as she tackled the beast from behind and drove a claw through its side.

For the first time… it stumbled.

---

The Revenant fell to a knee.

Its mask cracked—revealing part of a hollow face beneath. No nose. No jaw. Just glowing lines of runic blood and a single eye that stared at Lyle.

"You… are too late," it rasped.

"What do you mean?" Lyle demanded, stepping forward.

The Revenant reached toward the altar.

"A gate… was already opened. And through it…"

It didn't finish.

Juno's ghost-form hand passed through its head like a blade of wind.

The Revenant went still—its armor turning to dust.

And the chamber fell silent.
