Chapter 42 - Responsible

Upon Jay's return to his village, he chose not to go through the village entrance but instead to pass through the back area where his house was located.

Arriving at his house, Jay asked Nining and Ameno to wait for him at home and not to go anywhere else until he called his parents back home.

"Nining, take care of Ameno at home, and don't let anyone see her, got it!" Jay instructed Nining.

"Okay, big brother, you can rest assured," Nining replied playfully to Jay.

"You don't need to worry, I'll hide until you get back," Ameno said to reassure Jay.

After much discussion on the way back to his village, Ameno realized that his current identity was quite problematic.

So, after searching for a solution, Ameno and Jay finally agreed to establish Ameno's identity as a refugee from the eastern part of their country.

The eastern part of their country is an area with little rainfall and fairly barren soil.

While the country is known for its many sparsely populated, dry islands, the eastern region is also renowned for producing hardy cattle and horses.

However, due to a disaster several years ago and the ongoing instability, the eastern region is now considered a poor region, rife with conflict and famine.

From vague news reports, it was learned that the eastern region was now filled with refugees heading towards their nation's capital in the west.

And the village where Jay currently lived was one of the places that could be considered a route to their nation's capital.

So, with that in mind, they made a decision.

"Okay, then I'll be going," Jay immediately headed to the village farm, where he needed to return the livestock feed he had brought.

After returning the livestock feed, Jay began searching for his parents, and after asking around, he learned that they were currently with many villagers.

They were cleaning the irrigation canals around their village's rice fields. Due to the increasingly dry weather, the water flow in the canals had become smaller.

This necessitated regular maintenance and repairs along the canals to prevent the dwindling water supply from becoming clogged and ultimately causing the imminent harvest to fail.

The rice was suffering from a water shortage, and this was something many villagers could not tolerate.

"Dad..." Jay called out to his father, Paul, who was currently cleaning the canal with a hoe.

Paul, who was removing some mud from the canal, heard Jay's voice.

Seeing Jay approaching, Paul became confused and asked, "What's wrong, Jay?" his father asked.

"Dad, I have something important to tell you at home right away," Jay replied.

"What important thing?" Paul asked, surprised.

"This concerns your child's future, so come home with me immediately," Jay replied.

"Ehhh...what did you just say!!" Paul was a little shocked when he heard what Jay had said.

"Come on, Dad, let's hurry home. Oh yeah, I need to find Mom too," Jay then left Paul confused.

"Hey... Jay... wait a minute... ahhh... this kid!!" Complaining about Jay's attitude, Paul immediately asked the captain on duty for permission to go home first.

Not far from where Paul was, Jay's mother, Senorita, was seen along with several aunts from the same village, leveling mud taken from the irrigation system around the rice fields.

"Mom... Dad asked me to call you home now. My sister is coming home," Jay told his mother. The reason why Jay didn't tell his father the same thing was because his mother was close to some of the aunts, and he needed another excuse.

So, in the end, to avoid unnecessary gossip and gossip, Jay made up a random excuse about his mother's sister being from another place.

(For the record, the village where his mother came from is in a different province than his current village.)

"Ehhh…relatives from my hometown!! Who are they!!!" his mother asked curiously.

"I don't know either, you should go home first," Jay replied, urging his mother to go home.

"Señorita, you should hurry home…don't keep your relatives waiting," several aunts advised.

"That's right, they've come all this way," another aunt added.

"Okay, I'll go home."

"Now, let's report to the captain first," his mother replied to the aunts surrounding them, and invited Jay to go and see the captain to ask permission.

The work Jay's father and mother did was collective work initiated by the village and paid for with village work points, so they couldn't simply leave during work hours.

If they did, the captain, who was in charge of leading each group, would impose sanctions and punishments on them.

This would affect the results of data sharing when the harvest season ended.

Finally, Jay, his father and mother returned home, and were greeted by Nining, who was sitting on the porch waiting for them.

"Wow... you're finally back..." Nining said happily, welcoming the three of them.

"Quickly tell me, where are the relatives you were talking about?" His mother urged Jay.

"Ah, about that, where's Nining, Ameno?" Jay asked his younger sister, Nining.

"Ameno is inside, sis," Nining replied, leading them into the house.

"Eh…who's Ameno? Does your mother have a sibling named Ameno? Why don't I know!!" His father asked, hesitant and confused.

"That's right!!" His mother replied, feeling strange; from what she could remember, there was no Ameno in her extended family.

Until they entered the house and saw a beautiful young girl sitting there smiling and welcoming them, Jay's mother and father became even more confused.

"Who is this beautiful girl!!" They thought to themselves.

"Mom and Dad... come with me to my room," Jay invited them to enter.

After entering his room, Jay then recounted his encounter with Ameno and Nining in the forest.

Jay explained that Ameno was a poor girl, coming from the eastern part of his country and heading towards the capital to seek refuge and help.

But along the way, she was starving and injured, and got lost in the forest. She was eventually found by Jay and Nining.

Hearing this, both Jay's father and mother felt sympathy and pity for Ameno, especially after he explained that he accidentally saw her entire body while helping her save herself.

His mother immediately reacted angrily, "How could you be so unreasonable, Jay????" His mother was enraged by what she heard.

"That's right, Jay, you can't do that!!" His father was also furious.

"Okay… okay… or Mom, I know I was wrong, so that's why I asked Ameno to come to our house to meet you," Jay replied again.

"It's good that you know you were wrong, so what are you going to do?" his father asked again.

"I will take responsibility for Ameno," Jay replied in a serious tone.

"So what does Ameno think?" his mother asked quickly.

His mother was most eager to hear Ameno's response to Jay's behavior, because after all, she had seen that Ameno seemed to have a fairly healthy body and would definitely do well after getting married.
