Ryan rolled to the side but didn't feel the warm body that he had fallen asleep with. His hand touched the cold sheets, and he blinked awake, finding the room empty. The room was washed with light as the late morning sun peeked through the curtains.
"Carl?" he called, pushing himself up and padding out into the hallway. But he didn't get any reply other than the meows of Adalia and Jasmine, who rubbed against his legs in greeting. The house was empty.
He returned to the bedroom and finally spotted the folded note sitting on the nightstand.
Went to visit my dad. I'll be back soon.
Ryan turned it over, deep in thought. He could set up before Carl came back. Ryan hoped that too much time hadn't passed since he left the house. Without wasting a second, he grabbed his keys and left the apartment, riding the elevator up to Alex's floor. He pulled out his phone and called as he walked.
"Hello," he said as soon as the call connected. "I'm at your door."
